I have read that the giving of vitamin B 12 will help, and I have heard that the giving of methyl-testosterone (male hormone) will help, but I have no personal experience with these treatments. Years ago, my old and dis tinguished friend, Professor Herbert Evans, of the Univer sity of California, together with his associates, discovered the growth hormone in the pituitary gland. When too much of this hormone is form ed in the pituitary gland of a young person, he or she usually becomes very home ly. The skull may get large, the features may become large and coarse, and the lower jaw may be unusually large. The hands and feet may be large and the voice may become husky and coarse in quality. Queen Elizabeth To Have X-Rays London (UPI) Three doctors who have been exam ining Britain's ailing Queen Elizabeth II twice a day con ferred today on plans to have her X-rayed. Royal physician Lord Evans, Sir John Weir, and ear, nose and throat specialist Cecil Hogg were expected to continue their twice-daily ex aminations well into this week. The 32-year-old queen has been in bed for a week with acute catarrhal sinusitis. The doctors said she still was run ning a temperature. Although she had a "rest ful day" Sunday, she still was far from well. There was no indication when she would be able to resume her normally heavy round of public ap pearances. Woman Dies in Auto Plunge Near Vanport Portland (UPI) A woman was killed and her husband was injured critically early today when an automobile rolled down a 20-foot embank ment near the Vanport area about half a mile south of tne Interstate bridges here. Multnomah county police identified the victim as Mrs. Arlene Ruth McCuUough, 30, West Kelso, Wash. Her hus band, Samuel, was taken to Emanuel hospital. . He was thrown from the car. Unfortunately for peo ple of small stature, when the growth hormone made from the pituitary glands of cattle was tried on children, the re sults were largely unsatis factory. Recently, Dr. Li has found that this failure is due probably to the fact that the growth hormone obtained from cattle is chemically somewhat different from that of man. Children Grow Rapidly Recently, several physicians have made growth hormone out of human pituitary mate rial, and with this have been causing dwarfed children who lacked a normal pituitary gland, to grow rapidly. The sad feature of all this is that so little of the hormone can be made from the pituitaries of men that only a few chil dren a year can. be helped. It is possible that growth hor mone from monkeys would work in man, but the expense involved in producing enough of the drug from small mon keys would probably be pro hibitive for most persons. Dr. Li hopes now that growth hor mone obtained from whales will work in the cases of children. Some of the men working on this problem are Dr. Phil lip H. Henneman, of Harvard, Dr. Morris Raben, of Tufts Medical School, and Dr. John Beck of the Royal Victoria Hospital, in Montreal. I would suggest that my readers not bother these men. Dr. Beck recently wrote me to say that they have only tiny amounts of the new drug, not enough even for their own needs. There is not much chance of synthesizing the substance, be cause most of these hormones are too complicated chemi cally to be made in a labora tory. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read-; ers will understand that it! would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail.
