The World Series hero, an in-and-outer the first half of this season, staged a one-man show at Los Angeles Thurs day night when he hit two homers, including a grand slammer, to lead the Braves to an 8-4 victory over the Dodgers. Burdette's first hom er, off Johnny Podres in the fourth inning, made him the only active N.L. pitcher with a grand slam to his credit. The .victory enable the Braves to go IVi games ahead of the second-place San Fran cisco Giants who were beaten, 4-0, by Bob Purkey and the Cincinnati Hedlegs. The Phila delphia Phillies moved into third place with a 13-3 rout of the St. Louis Cardinals and the . Chicago Cubs - beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-7, in other t N.L. games. In the 'American League, the New York Yankees open ed up an HV2-game margin by sweeping a day-nighter from the Cleveland Indians. 7-4, and 4-3. The Boston Red Sox crushed the Chicago White Sox, 11-2, and took over the second place when the Baltimore Orioles swept the Kansas City Athletics, 6-3 and 3-2, while the Washington Senators downed the Detroit Tigers, 5-3. Burdette Booed A crowd of 40,508 at Los Angeles booed Burdette, who fot into frequent disputes with umpire Shag Crawford over ball-and-strike calls but went ,the distance with .an 11-hitter. Robin Roberts pitch ed a nine-hitter behind a 13 hit attack for his seventh win.' Pirate Rally Fails The Cubs survived . a five- run Pittsburgh rally in the ninth as Taylor Phillips won his sixth game and Vern Law lost his seventh. Frank Thomas hit two homers and Dick Stuart one for the Pi rates while Lee Walls hom ered for the Cubs. Elston Howard knocked in three runs with a fourth-inning triple and an eighth-inning single as the Yankees rallied to win their day game. Relief pitchers Johnny Kucks and Ryne Duren held the In dians to one hit over the last 5 23 innings. In the night game, Jerry Lumpe's two-run double was the blow of a four-run eighth inning New York rally and Duren again came to the rescue with his flame-thrower in the ninth. Jackie Jensen paced a 13- hit Red Sox attack with a grand slam homer and two other hits to make it easy for Frank Sullivan to win his seventh game. MedfordITribune ; Chiefs, Brorscs Share NWL Lead By United Press International Thanks to Red Helms, the Wenatchee Chiefs are hang ing on to a share of the Northwest league lead. Helms sent two homers out of the park Thursday night as the Chiefs toppled Yaki ma, 7-4. His first, a two-run belt, came in the second and gave the Chiefs a 2-1 lead. in the fifth, Helms rocket ed another two-run homer to break a 4-4 tie and the Chiefs took it from there. Don Gan n u s, Yakima centerfielder, led the Bears' seven-hit at tack with a single and a double. Lewiston gained a share of the top spot with 6-2 and 2-1 decisions over the Salem Sen ators. Thornton Kipper cashed in his 13th win of the year in the nightcap with an eight-hit victory. Both Lewiston runs were unearned.- The Broncs got their eventual winning run in the third when Ernie Hallgren tripled home Jerry Linnell who had reached first on an error. Eugene and Tri-City trad ed 6-5 decisions. Eugene, won the opener by that score and Tri-City reversed it in the nightcap. In the opener, the Emeralds got their winning run in the sixth when John Keller walked, moved up on a sacri fice and scored on Tom Agos ta's single. n Tri-City got four runs in the "fourth frame of the sec second game and then iced it with two in the sixth. Softball two stanzars on only one hit per frame. Eagle Point man aged its only tally in the first inning on a walk, a stolen base, and two wild pitches.' In the second game the Maids gathered three hits for two runs in the first inning but were unable to break into the . scoring column again. The Loggers picked up five runs in the first on only one hit. They' went on to add three more in the fourth and a honie run by Lange in the fifth. . . They' next league action, Monday, July 14, will find the Jaycees opening against the Bureau of Reclamation at 7 p.m. The games are slated for the Camp White ball park. Barr fanned 13 batters and gave up only two walks as he went the distance for a 2-1 victory over the Studs. Dean had two for three at the plate including a home run over the right field fence in the fourth inning to knot the game at 1 and 1. . " Central Point scored early in the first inning. Lead-off batter Harley Dickerson, sec ond baseman, got on base on an error. After the second batter was fanned, Dennis Pfaff, center fielder, hit a one bagger to drive in the Studs' only run. Barr went on to fan the next two batters and re tire the. side. Medford got two hits in the second and Central Point got a single in the third but nei ther team was able to parlay the hits into runs. The Studs were retired in the fourth after Barr struck out two issued two walks, hit a batter with a ball to load the bases, and, then struck out the next man up.. After tying the score in the bottom of the - fourth with Dean's homer, Medford . was able to pick up only one hit in the next two innings. The Studs were held down through the seventh. In the bottom of the sev enth Medford led off with Lowell Dean pinch-hitting for first baseman Bob Quinney. Dean got a single, was ad vanced, to second by Ray Ko nopasek's sacrifice, went to third on a hit by pitcher Barr, and was knocked home ' by lead-off batter Ken Durkee to end the game. Earlier in the week an American Legion official mis takenly! reported tha Thurs day's game would determine which team would compete with Grants Pass and Klam ath Falls in the district finals. Grants Pass and Klamath Falls will meet for the district championship this Sunday at Grants Pass and by virtue of Thursday's win Medford fin ished third in the district. The previous high was last year's 1,060 entries. Boys of 17 or younger are eligible for the tournament.
