of the second-place San Fran
cisco Giants who were beaten,
4-0, by Bob Purkey and the
Cincinnati Hedlegs. The Phila
delphia Phillies moved into
third place with a 13-3 rout
of the St. Louis Cardinals and
the . Chicago Cubs - beat the
Pittsburgh Pirates, 8-7, in
other t N.L. games.
In the 'American League,
the New York Yankees open
ed up an HV2-game margin
by sweeping a day-nighter
from the Cleveland Indians.
7-4, and 4-3. The Boston Red
Sox crushed the Chicago
White Sox, 11-2, and took
over the second place when
the Baltimore Orioles swept
the Kansas City Athletics, 6-3
and 3-2, while the Washington
Senators downed the Detroit
Tigers, 5-3.
Burdette Booed
A crowd of 40,508 at Los
Angeles booed Burdette, who
fot into frequent disputes
with umpire Shag Crawford
over ball-and-strike calls but
went ,the distance with .an
11-hitter. The win squared
his record at 7-7 while the
loss was Johnny Podres'
eighth in 16 decisions.

the nightcap with an eight-hit
victory. Both Lewiston runs
were unearned.- The Broncs
got their eventual winning
run in the third when Ernie
Hallgren tripled home Jerry
Linnell who had reached first
on an error.
Eugene and Tri-City trad
ed 6-5 decisions. Eugene, won
the opener by that score and
Tri-City reversed it in the
nightcap.
In the opener, the Emeralds
got their winning run in the
sixth when John Keller
walked, moved up on a sacri
fice and scored on Tom Agos
ta's single. n
Tri-City got four runs in
the "fourth frame of the sec
second game and then iced it
with two in the sixth.
Softball
two stanzars on only one hit
per frame. Eagle Point man
aged its only tally in the first
inning on a walk, a stolen
base, and two wild pitches.'
In the second game the
Maids gathered three hits for
two runs in the first inning
but were unable to break into
the . scoring column again.
The Loggers picked up five
runs in the first on only one
hit. They' went on to add
three more in the fourth and
a honie run by Lange in the
fifth.

Monday, July 14, will find
the Jaycees opening against
the Bureau of Reclamation at
7 p.m. The games are slated

Thursday night to grab third
place in Area 4 South district
American Legion junior base
ball.. -Medford was paced by -the
pitching of Dennis Barr and
hitting by shortstop Cal Dean.
Barr fanned 13 batters and
gave up only two walks as he
went the distance for a 2-1
victory over the Studs.
Dean had two for three at
the plate including a home
run over the right field fence
in the fourth inning to knot
the game at 1 and 1. . "
Central Point scored early
in the first inning. Lead-off
batter Harley Dickerson, sec
ond baseman, got on base on
an error. After the second
batter was fanned, Dennis
Pfaff, center fielder, hit a one
bagger to drive in the Studs'
only run. Barr went on to fan
the next two batters and re
tire the. side.
Medford got two hits in the
second and Central Point got
a single in the third but nei
ther team was able to parlay
the hits into runs.
The Studs were retired in
the fourth after Barr struck
out two issued two walks, hit
a batter with a ball to load
the bases, and, then struck
out the next man up..
After tying the score in the
bottom of the - fourth with
Dean's homer, Medford . was
able to pick up only one hit
in the next two innings. The
Studs were held down
through the seventh.
In the bottom of the sev
enth Medford led off with
Lowell Dean pinch-hitting for
first baseman Bob Quinney.
Dean got a single, was ad
vanced, to second by Ray Ko
nopasek's sacrifice, went to
third on a hit by pitcher Barr,
and was knocked home ' by
lead-off batter Ken Durkee to

its 1958 Junior Amateur
championship set a record for

eligible for the tournament.
Sectional qualifying rounds at
47 sites will reduce the field
to 128 for the championship
proper at the ' University of
