The couple returned Tues day from Modesto, Calif., where they had gone to pick fruit. They left with $27 and re turned with 20 cents after days of picking apricots, strawberries and mowing lawns. "You both belong in jail," Judge Simon admonished. "Unless you produce some body in court who can offer you jobs, you're going to jail." The children are living with relatives in Lancaster, Calif. Portland Man's Body Found in Willamette Portland (UPI) The body of a Portland man, Edward Hastings, 72, was found in the Willamette river here Tuesday downstream from the west end of the Steel Bridge. The Multnomah county cor oner's office said the man had been seen alive a few hours egrlier when he left his room ing house. Drowning was the apparent cause of death,, but an autopsy was ordered, the coroner said. Japanese Jailed For Cruelly To Little Daughter Yoshiwara, Japan (UPI) A 4-year-old Japanese girl kept by her father in a wood en cage for 16 days pointed to her broken arms, bruises and burns Tuesday and said, "Daddy did this." Tiny Masako Uehara repeat ed her story to nurses at a hospital where she was placed after a police detective found her crouched inside the nail-ed-down cage in the dark store room of her father's house. The father, 29-year-old car penter Hiroshi Uehara. was in a solitary police cell. He and his common law wife will come up for trial next month. They can draw as much as 10 years in prison on a charge of inflicting bodily injury. For Punishment Uehara told police he tor tured and starved his daugh ter to "punish her for steal ing cakes and food from the neighbors." Neighbors ex plained they sometimes fed Masako because her father and stepmother gave her little to eat. Police said Uehara admitted that he would tie the girl in a sugar bag and leave her on the floor for several days nnrl that finally he built wooden cage and kicked her into it. Head Found Harder Than Windshield Grand Rapids, Mich. (UPI) If even statistics are taken on the relative hardness of a human head to an automobile windshield, the Grand Rapids city commission will be pre pared to prove the windshield is weaker. The city approved payment Tuesday of $78 to Robert O'Neil of Grand Rapids. O'Neil's car windshield was broken when Police Lt. Ed ward Lapp hurled his night stick at a fleeing suspect June 1. It caromed off the subject's head with little damage and sailed through the wind shield. Cify Workers Threaten Strike LOs Angeles (UPI) Ignor ing the old adage about city hall and the chances of fight ing it, a group of 2,000 to 3,000 city workers demon strated Tuesday for a pay raise. Carrying signs reading, "We are against compulsory poverty," and "We pay taxes,, too,", the disappointed work ers paraded down a downtown street and collected on the steps of the city hall. A veiled strike threat was contained in a statement by Sidney Moore, business repre sentative of the AFL-CIO and County Employees Union, who said: . "This is only the beginning. We will take such steps as we deem necessary in the inter ests of city work. There is no law against a work stoppage by municipal employees." Cinema City has become a two-Gabor town. Eva, sister of Gen. Trujillo's bosom buddy, has purchased a "small house" just outside the Fires Chase Young Campers Yucaipa, Calif. (UPI) Hundreds of firefighters today battled three fires which burned over 500 acres in the San Bernardino National For est, forcing evacuation of 200 youthful campers and their leaders from campsites. ' The blazes broke out Tues day within a three-hour pe riod within six airline miles of a 15-minute drive by auto mobile, leading U.S. forest rangers to believe they were set by an arsonist. v Within a short time the fires had scorched hundreds of acres, bringing the evacuation of youngsters and their coun selors from Pilgrim Pines Camp in the Oak Glen area. The evacdees were brought here where they were bedded down in an elementary school and fed by Red Cross teams which rushed to the area. W.VA. TEACHERS MARRY Charleston, W.Va. (UPI) The West Virginia Education Association reports that .West Virginia teachers are seldom "old maids." Statistics show ed that three-fourths of West Virginia women teachers are married 25 per cent more than the national figure- gates of Bel - Air where she plans to settle permanently. New York's loss is Holly wood's frustration. "I sometimes wonder if this place is big enough for two Gabors," Eva bubbled during lunch. "At times. I am amazed that the world is big enough for both of us. But we are good friends, and the stories about feuds are not true." Socially, Zsa Zsa has the best of it.
