c O Science Said Making Progress In Workings of Human Mind ' By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor New York (UPI) Sci ence definitely i s making progress with its most diffi cult riddle, the enormously complicated workings of the human mind. The proof of that is a newly devised tech nique which keeps minds on an even keel by anchoring them to the stomach instead of to the eyes. This technique can pre vent or cure "black spot de lirium." It often seizes people whose eyes are necessarily kept bandaged after surgery and it makes them act as though they were crazy. Their minds had been dependent upon their seeing eyes. De prived of sight, their minds seem to fall apart. Drs. Avery D. Weisman and Thomas P. Hackett of Harvard Medical School based the technique on the psychi atric understanding that hu man minds maintain their bal ance by constantly "testing reality." Human minds want to know such things as these: What is responsible for that noise I hear? Am I at home or at the office or in the j street? What is giving off with the distant talk? Is it day or night? Risk of Disturbances When you suddenly deprive the minds of seeing people of the eye-way - of "testing re ality" you're risking .disturb ances in their understanding of time and place and what Timber Can Furnish Half of Economy in State, Official Says Portland An Oregon for ester told Oregon teachers participating in Portland State college's Economic Ed ucation Workshop Monday that timber can furnish at least half of Oregon's basic economy from now on. W. D. Hagenstein, executive vice president. Industrial For estry association, called Ore gon the nation's No. 1 forest state. It has the greatest forest acreage, greatest timber sup ply and has the greatest, for ' est industry jobs and payrolls. It is the nation's principal pro ' ducer of lumber, glywood and hardboard. He cited the growing im portance of forest industry & Oregon's economy by com paring figures for 1921 and 1956. In the earlier year less than 22,000 people were em ployed with an annual payroll of $27,B)0,000. eThirty-five years lter, forest industry employment increpsed four times to nearly 88,000 with an Qmnual payroll greater than $425,00fJ).000. The value of the state's forest products increased between 1821 and 1956 from $70j,000,000 to more than $1,160,008,000. Significant Programs Hagenstein cited three sig nificant programs of Oregon forestry which started in 1941 (1) the Forest Conservation act o help keep private for ests productive, (2) the Keep Oregon Green campaign to prevent man - caused forest fires, and (3) forest industry founding of the Tree Farm Movement. "We had no idea that the Tree Farm Program would catch on so fast nor effectively when we started it in 1941, Hagenstein said. Today, more than 41 per cent of all private forest land in Oregon is in certified tree 'farms. Hagenstein .called the great est advance in forestry in the last 20 years the saving of wood by use ' of lumber and plywood leftovers for raw ma terial for Oregon s growing pulp and paper and hardboard industries. He said this has in creased the State's timber sup ply by 100 billion feet. The forestry leader said Oregon could keep forever green through the practice of tree farming. He warned that this can be done under private enterprise only through equit able timber taxation, freedom from punitive and restrictive legislation and intelligent co operation between Govern ment timber on the market at prices consumers can pay. "Black spot delirium" follows. Weisman and Hackett sub stituted the stomach-way and the nose-way of "testing re ality" for this eye-way. They worked with six patients 57 to 86 years old who had sur gery for detached retinas, the removal of cataracts, and similar conditions. One man had been an Itali an army cook in his youth. In his mind this was the most glamorous period of his life. He loved spiced foods and coffee mixed with wine. His "black spot delirium" .was dispelled and prevented from returning by the simple "med icine" of the doctor sitting at his bedside, drinking and eat ing his favorite drink and foods with him, and talking about the dangers and glories of being an army cook. Had Liked Gardening One woman patient had been an enthusiastic flower gardener all her life. The doc tor saw to it there were carnations by her bedside, giving off their fragrant "re ality testing" scent in her blackened world. Reporting this new . scien tific know-how through the New England Journal of Medi cine, Weisman and Hackett acknowledged that doctors have always known that eye bandaged patients need "sym pathy" and "support" from them. But that knowledge is too general, they said; it lacks specifications. Find out what appeals to the patient's stom ach or his nose of his mem ories beforehand, they advis ed, and then make use of whatever it is when "black spot delirium" threatens. , Austrian Pine Tree Test for Industry Thompsonville, Mich. (UPI) The future of Michi gan's Christmas tree and pulp- wood industries may hinge on a one-acre planting of Aus trian pine trees near here. Foresters of the American Box Board Co. at Filer City recently discovered , the 27- year-old planting and cut a fourth of a cord of sample wood for pulpwood testings Austrian pine ' is rapidly growing in favor for use in re forestation and Christmas tree planting," said Rowland Blair, the company's chief forester, Blair said discovery of the one-acre Austrian pine plant ing provides long-sought in formation on Michigan plant ings. Other Austrian pine plantings were too small and scattered to be properly eval uated as to their pulpwood and timber potential and re sistance to diseases and in sects. MAIL TRIBUNE, MHfori, Oregon, WtlnetoV, July 9, If St 7 Highway Crash Fatal To Youth Pendleton (UPI) Michael Lee Foster, 18, of .Adams, Ore., was fatally injured early today when his car struck a house trailer, then sideswiped an oncoming cattle truck in an accident that blocked High way 30 for more than an hour. Two occupants of the house trailer, which was following van of race horses east on Highway 30, were injured. State police said the trailer of the cattle truck jackknifed and overturned, killing two of the cattle and a horse that was in the same trailer. Twen ty-five cattle were thrown free and had to be rounded up. The van of race horses was un touched. Fred Sharpe, 52, of Lexing ton, Ky., asleep in the house trailer at the time, was in jured and taken to St. An thony's hospital here for treat ment. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Sharpe, 47, suffered lacera tions and was also brought to the Pendleton hospital. The driver of the car hauling the trailer, 19-year-old Douglas Allen Johnson of Winston, Ore., was unhurt. Albert Klein of Portland, driver of the cat tle truck for the Silver Falls Produce Company, also was unhurt.
