Couple Faces Loss of Children

day from Modesto, Calif.,
where they had gone to pick
fruit.
They left with $27 and re
turned with 20 cents after
days of picking apricots,
strawberries and mowing
lawns.
"You both belong in jail,"
Judge Simon admonished.
"Unless you produce some
body in court who can offer
you jobs, you're going to jail."
The children are living with
relatives in Lancaster, Calif.
Portland Man's Body
Found in Willamette

of a Portland man, Edward
Hastings, 72, was found in the
Willamette river here Tuesday
downstream from the west
end of the Steel Bridge.
The Multnomah county cor
oner's office said the man had
been seen alive a few hours
egrlier when he left his room
ing house. Drowning was the
apparent cause of death,, but
an autopsy was ordered, the
coroner said.

A 4-year-old Japanese girl
kept by her father in a wood
en cage for 16 days pointed
to her broken arms, bruises
and burns Tuesday and said,
"Daddy did this."
Tiny Masako Uehara repeat
ed her story to nurses at a
hospital where she was placed
after a police detective found
her crouched inside the nail-ed-down
cage in the dark store
room of her father's house.
The father, 29-year-old car
penter Hiroshi Uehara. was
in a solitary police cell. He
and his common law wife
will come up for trial next
month. They can draw as
much as 10 years in prison on
a charge of inflicting bodily
injury.
For Punishment
Uehara told police he tor
tured and starved his daugh
ter to "punish her for steal
ing cakes and food from the
neighbors." Neighbors ex
plained they sometimes fed
Masako because her father
and stepmother gave her little
to eat.
Police said Uehara admitted
that he would tie the girl in
a sugar bag and leave her on
the floor for several days

wooden cage and kicked her
into it.

bosom buddy, has purchased a
"small house" just outside the

est, forcing evacuation of 200
youthful campers and their

The blazes broke out Tues
day within a three-hour pe
riod within six airline miles
of a 15-minute drive by auto
mobile, leading U.S. forest
rangers to believe they were
set by an arsonist. v
Within a short time the
fires had scorched hundreds of
acres, bringing the evacuation
of youngsters and their coun
selors from Pilgrim Pines
Camp in the Oak Glen area.
The evacdees were brought
here where they were bedded
down in an elementary school
and fed by Red Cross teams
which rushed to the area.

everybody. Because I am
youngest I have to talk louder
and longer to get a word in
edgewise."
The Hungarian beauty says
she is moving west to avoid
living out of suitcases in hotel
apartments. She will, how
ever, maintain her five-story
apartment building in Man
hattan. .
"I don't like stocks and
bonds for investments. They
are only paper," she chat
tered. "I prefer something I
can see. Being a Hungarian, I
like land lots of land. In ad
dition to my New York place
and my new house I have
bought some property in Tam
pa, Florida."
Before she could continue,
Eva was surrounded by a gang
of tourists asking for auto
graphs. She scribbled furious
ly on menus and bits of paper.
"I couldn't be more im
pressed with myself," she
smiled.
"I am a big ham. The
minute a camera turns on me
or if I have an audience it
picks me up like champagne.
Gabor Means Sex
"My problem is that I have
to prove I can act. This glam
orous Gabor name stands for
sex appeal first, last and al
ways. You can't be a glamour
girl forever. Sad but true. It's
only fleeting, and I want to
go on acting until I am 70
years old.
"I shall die the moment I
am not busy."
Eva manages to keep on the
move. She's completed two
movies, "Gigi" and " The
Truth About Women," and be
came a favorite guest qn the
Jack Paar show.
Eva proved she is as zany as
the rest of the Gabor clan.
There is a possibility I will
do a Broadway show in the
fall," she announced.
Then why did she buy a
house in Westwood?
"That's a good question,
she smiled. "I've already rent
ed a suite in the Plaza Hotel
while I am in New York. I
guess it is sort of confusing." -
