Handling Fats Recently, Drs. William Lik- off, Donald Berkowitz, Asher Woldon and Gerson Jacobs told members of the American Heart Association that by making edible fats radio-ac tive, they had been able to show that persons with a tend ency to coronary artery dis ease may take a longer time to handle fat they eat than do normal persons. Normal subjects absorbed most of the fat within six hours; and 24 hours later, less than 5 per cent of the fat re mained in the blood. In other groups of persons with a high level of blood "cholesterol (a fat-like substance) or with coronary heart disease, the absorption of fat was delayed; more was taken into the blood, and much of it remain ed after 24 hours. I expect that tne time is coming when tests of this type will help us physicians to pick out the persons who are in serious danger of having a coronary artery ulcerate and then plug up. It is possible also that when a man who is pre-disposed to arterial dis ease eats an unusually large meal, rich in fat, for the next 36 hours is in danger of get ting a heart attack or a stroke. Fox, of the great Sloan - Kettering Institute, New York City,, of what has been accomplished in the chemial synthesis of counter feits of nucleic acid." As I have noted several times in this column, nucleic acids are the essential components of the nuclei or growing centers of cells: Some of these acids behave like living things. They are the essential parts of the viruses that produce so many of our illnesses. One of the most hopeful ways of attacking cancers is to feed the cancer cells a fraudulent" "building block' of food a chemical (not good as food) that so closely resem bles the cells' real food that they will accept it; and there by be inadequately, nourished To show what I mean one could probably almost kill children by feeding them nothing but the candy they would gladly eat. Because the candy contains none of the protein that is so essential to a child's growth and de velopment, he or she would go down-hill and become weak and ill. 1 Now, a new-found nucleo side called "thio-guanosine" so closely resembles normal cell-food that already it has proved effective in stopping the growth of a number of ex perimental ' tumors. Associat ed with Dr. Fox in this work were Dina Van Praag, Iris Wempen, Iris L. Doerr, Loret ta Cheong, Joseph E. Knoll, Maxwell L. Edinoff and Aar on Bendich. I would ask that readers not write to ask me for the new chemical because it is still used only in laboratories. I write about it only because it can give us all hope. Many such drugs of value in cancer are now being synthetized. Aged May Lack Vitamin B-6 At the last session 'of the Federation of American So cieties for Experimental Bi ology, in Philadelphia, Dr Elma Ranke, of Baltimore, re ported that on an average, the blood of elderly men and women between the ages of 60 and 90 years contains less vitamin B-6 than is found in younger person. It is to be hoped now that the giving of B-6 to some elderly persons will help them to feel better and stronger and more wideawake. Dr. Alvarez hopes his read ers will understand that it would be impossible for him to answer requests for infor mation or to attempt to diag nose by mail.
