Cancer Society Hopes to Work With Local Fund SPECIAL PRICE o Bargain Grade e CHENEY STUD MILL Central Point The Jackson county unit of the Oregon division of the American Cancer society hopes to work in cooperation with the United Medford Cru sade, despite a recent nation al directive forbidding local units to participate in united fund drives, it was reported Saturday. John Dellenback, chairman of the local cancer unit, and Dr. Earl Lawson, a member of the state ASC board, are going to Portland tomorrow to present to the state Cancer society officials a resolution adopted recently by the local unit, in which are expressed the hopes of continued coop eration. The Cancer unit here has been a beneficiary of the UMC for some years, but the national society adopted a policy of withdrawal from united drives, some months ago, and the state organiza tion followed last month. To Cooperate If Approved . If the state office of the Cancer society approves the resolution it will mean the lo cal unit can cooperate with the UMC, "particularly in the field of in-plant and gov ernmental unit solicitations." If it is disapproved, the Cancer unit here will have two choices, to follow the na tional directive to work alone or to disband and perhaps form an autonomous organi zation devoted to anti-cancer activities. (Last week, the Spokane, county, Washington, chapter of the ASC quit the national organization formed their own group, and will join, the Spokane United Crusade drive. Eighteen of the 19 members of its advisory coun cil resigned. Other chapters have shown dissatisfaction with the ACS directive.) Resolution Quoted The resolution adopted by the local Cancer society last week, said: ' "Whereas, the board of di rectors of the Jackson county unit of the Oregon division of the American Cancer so ciety has been -directed to dis continue its affiliation with the United Medford Crusade pursuant to state and national policy directives, and "Whereas, said board of di rectors anticipates that if such policy should be carried to the point of no cooperation or pooling of efforts with the United Medford Crusade it would result in irreparable damage to both the work of the American Cancer society and of numerous other chari table causes in Jackson coun ty, and thereby be detrimen tal to the community as a whole, and "Whereas, the said board of directors desires to follow the state and national policy of the American Cancer so ciety without damage to other worthy causes . and without damage to our community. now, therefore, it is hereby "Resolved, that the Jack son county unit of the Ore gon division of ,the American Cancer society work in close harmony and cooperation with the United Medford Cru sade in the collection of funds and all matters pertaining tnereto, particularly in the field of plant and governmen tal unit solicitations, and that the executive committee of said Jackson county unit be, and it is hereby, directed to work out with the duly au thorized officers of the United Medford Crusade all neces sary details pertaining to such cooperation in the col lection of funds."
