Portland (UPI) The 50th anniversary Portland Rose Festival today featured inau guration of a Festival Center in downtown park blocks. To night will mark the reinstate ment of an old Portland tradi tion, the Merrykhana fun pa rade with illuminated floats and antique cars. Queen of that parade will be film star Esther Williams. The "100' days" terminal date for the Shah-Soraya di vorce is July 14. If they are to repair their romance, they ill have to do it by then. "He's certainly going to miss taking the lions for a walk each day," his wife, Alicia, sighed, "but I suppose it will be better when he gets the two tigers he wants. Body of Waldporf Girl Found in Pond Waldport, Ore. (UPI) State police Monday night re covered the body of Gail Ann Thompson, 10, from a mill pond three miles east of her home at Waldport. 1 The child, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Thompson, was last seen Monday just be fore 6 p.m. Her body was not found until after 10 p.m. Officers said water in" the mill pond was 8 to 10 feet deep and .that the Thompson girl couldn't swim. Her body was. fully clothed, indicating she had fallen into the water accidentally. IMVENTOR DIES Yonkers, N. Y. (UPI) Karl J. Fairbanks, 55, inven tor and aeronautics authority, died Sunday after an illness of six weeks. (UPI) Okla homa oilman Senator Rob ert Kerr (D) has labeled Pres ident Eisenhower "honorable, but uninformed about as co lossal a failure as president as we ever had." Kerr, in Dallas to address .the Advertising Federation of America, said "there are any number of informed people in Dallas who know more about what is going on in the E i s e n hower administration than Eisenhower." Wyaft May Get Tax Court Post Portland (UPI) Wendell Wyatt, Astoria attorney and former state Republican Cen tral Committee chairman, was reported today to be un der consideration for a vacan cy on the U.S. Tax Court. , - The vacancy occurred with the death of Judge Stephen E. Rice of Florida. Wyatt was in Washington, D. Con business for the Co lumbia River Packers Asso ciation and had no comment on the report. The Oregonian quoted informed sources as saying Wyatt was under con sideration for the $22,500 post. The late Judge Rice's term would have run until June 1, 1968. Reformatory Escapees Back in Institution Monroe, Wash. (UPI) Four inmates who escaped from the maximum security ward at the Washington State Reformatory here Monday were rounded up late Monday night. Grange Notes Pomona Grange : A large group of members attended the May meeting of Jackson County Pomona Grange hall, to see a class of 21 candidates receive the fifth degreej The entire staff of officers were present to ex emplify this degree. Entries in the Juvenile poster contest were displayed by Pomona HEC chairman Edith Poe, who reported that the judges considered them all equally good. Accordingly prizes were awarded to Caro lee Kuset, Judy Frink, Bobbi Darras and Carol Foote. Judy Frink was also given a prize for her essay. On June 3 the fifth degree team, including court ladies and musicians, travelled to Klamath Falls, ' where the fifth degree was exemplified at . the Midland Grange hall for the Klamath County Po mona Grange. All officers at tended this meeting except Pomona Willie McLean, who is ill in the hospital. Substi tuting . for her was Meryle Carlton pf Upper Rogue Grange. . Included in the class of 18 who received the degree at this time were Evelyn Jean and Clarence Albert Williams of Upper Applegate Grange in Jackson county. Kerr said present govern ment restrictions on foreign oil imports are "about as good as pitching hay with a table fork." ' He said the State depart ment has some good men but they are "hypnotized by a de termination to bring on cer tain results" through current trade agreements. Kerr said the Reciprocal Trade Acts have been grossly distorted by the State department. Kerr charged that the busi ness recession was made by administration leaders who have done "little, if anything, to bring us out of it." Motorists Get 'Roller' Feeling Portland (UPI) Motor ists here have reported feel ing "roller coaster" effects when crossing the east side approaches to the new Mor rison street bridge. Multnomah County. Road- master says ah investigation will be conducted to see if girders supporting east side approaches "sag" under the weight of tons of concrete roadbed. . An engineer said the roller coaster effect was a common fault of bridges and that he didn't believe the problem would become much worse. (UPI) Two children in a runaway auto plunged over the rim of the Grand Canyon to their deaths Monday bringing to three the number killed in the past 24, hours in plunges into the canyon. The children, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Quails, Brownsville, Tex., were killed when their parents' car rolled into the canyon from a scenic lookout point 10 miles west of here 'on Highway 64. Watch HolplwslT The horrified couple stood helplessly as their car moved forward, gained momentum and then plunged l,50O feet into the canyon, coming to rest in the Little Colorado river. . Earlier in the day, park rangers brought the body of Donald L. Mark, a clerk at an auto camp near the El Tovar Lodge on the south rim, out of the depths of the canyon. Witnesses said he tumbled 300 feet into the canyon while playfully - jumping among rocks, described by Park .Su perintendent John McLough lin as an "awfully dangerous place." - Bodies of the Quails' chil dren, James Lloyd, 5, and Harold Frank, 15 months, were recovered at mid-after noon about three hours after the car had plunged over the edge. Edward J. Hawes of the Multnomah County Central Labor Council's civil rights committee saidihe was "cha grined" Saturday at the lack of representatives from labor at a governor's inter-group conference. He said members should get locals to back fights for civil rights laws and practices. Housing was described as the main area of discrimina tion in Oregon by A. T. "It went over the side and we couldn't stop it," the tear ful father said. Brand Proposes Taking justices Out of Politics Salem (UPI) Retiring Oregon Supreme , Court Jus tice James T. Brand says that newly - appointed justices should be freed from the ne cessity to campaign during their orientation period on the court. ' Justice Brand, who has an nounced his retirement effec tive July 1, says adoption of the so-called "Missouri sys tem" would help speed han dling of the backlog of court cases. He said that under the sys tern justices are appointed by the governor for 12 yeajs and are subject to recall at stated intervals by popular vote. Should Be Separated Justice Brand said the judi cial office should be separat ed from partisan politics. He cited the cases of Jus tice William McAllister, who was named to succeed the late Walter Tooze, and of Gordon Sloan who was nam ed to succeed Justice Randall Kester who resigned to take another position. He said each was compelled to spend time and effort to conduct a campaign for election to the court. Justice Brand estimated that 19 out of 20 Oregon en tries into the state judicial system come first by appoint ment, followed by election. He said no man can be ex pected to give up a law prac tice and then studiously de vote his time to writing judi cial opinions when politicians are out to beat him in an election campaign. The charter was draped in memory of George Tackstein. Carlton was elected as fire insurance representative to the state grange June 9 at Eugene. He is a delegate to the state grange. Mrs. Peg Anderton was reported to be in Sacred Heart hospital in Medford.. The next grange meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., June 9, and will be potluck. Visitors at Thursday s meeting were Mrs. Bill Mil ler of Beverly Hills, Calif., and. Mrs. Mert Stafford of Kansas. Strawberries and ice cream were served by the refresh ment -committee at the close of the business meeting.
