An. STUTTERING A while ago. Dr. Wendell j Johnson, professor of speech j troubles at the University of Iowa, wrote that when he was 30, he still was a hopeless stut terer. Then h e overcame his defect so well that, ever since, he has been a good lecturer. Early in his teaching career, he found that, usually, what happened to a stuttering child was that his parents began to fuss because his speech was to some degree halting and repetitious, as is the case with many adults. Few of us speak like a radio announcer. Dr. Johnson thought that if the parents had ignored the child's difficulties and had not become impatient with him, he would gradually have learned to speak more flu ently. But the parents fussed, and soon he was stuttering. Dr. Johnson found that many children between the ages of two and four trend to repeat many sounds or syllables, or whole words or phrases. Primitive peoples commonly do the same thing. For instance, the great King of the Hawaiian islands was Kamehameha I, and his heir was Liholiho. Dr. Johnson said that school teachers found it hard to distinguish between some children who spoke with normal hesitation and some who were thought by their parents to be stutter ers. The youngsters got tense and spoke with more effort when their parents fussed at them. Instruction Required Dr. Johnson and his asso ciates soon came to the con clusion that it was tfre parents rather than the child the listeners rather than the speakers who were the ones most requiring instruction and exhortation. Whenever a new stutterer .came in, the first thing Dr. Johnson did was to make a study of the parents. He made extensive studies of the parents of 250 normal children and of 250 stutterers, asking them hun dreds of questions which cov ered most aspects of family living. The unusual thing about the parents of stutters was -that they demanded more of themselves and their children. They were more in clined to be edgy and dis satisfied; also, they appraised themselves and each other less favorably than the facts seemed to justify. These par ents tended to make an issue of the way their child was speaking, and this set off what doctors call a vicious circle the less pleased they were with their child's talk, the harder it was for him to speak comfortably to them, GRADUATION SPECIAL! It is significant that com monly a stutterer speaks well enough when he is talking to his school-mates, or his dog, or with a person whom he much likes. When he gets home and feels that his par ents are anxious about him, he may start stuttering. As I shall show in another col umn, other experts on stutter ing, who admit the truth of what Dr. Johnson says, point to other factors such as hered ity, and the "stuttering con stitutio n" a constitution which gives many stutterers trouble not only with the control of the muscles of speech, but also, wth the con trol of muscles all over the body. Dr. Johnson advises the parents of a stutterer to read to the child, and to talk with him when they can. He asks them to remember that often when a child is talking badly what he is doing is trying to hold the center of interest in a group of adults when he cannot think of anything to say. Then the parents might well say, "Junior; wait a bit until you know what you want to say; and then we will listen to you." The other day, listening over the " radio, I heard a prominent man speak very badly, much as a child does when he doesn't know what he is going to say. He kept hesitating and ur-ring and ah ing. I gained the impression that his thinking and speak ing mechanisms were work ing out of phase with one an other. " One thing that may surprise many persons is that in a great university speech clinic only a small percentage of the patients are stutterers. For in stance, in Iowa City, out of 1200 speech patients seen each year, only about 100 are stut terers. Many stutterers are the bet ter for listening to their speech, recorded on tape. They also are made to talk in front of a mirror. Dr. John son says that when people ask him how he cured himself, he has no one pat answer. His advice is to do three things: first, talk to people and then talk some more to people. Don't avoid them. Second, learn all you can about your problem; the more Don't Miss the ... Third, practice and keep practicing, using the techniques that have been suggested by an expert. Many stutterers are cured. Itchy Legs Many elderly people know that, when toward the end of October the weather sud denly changes and the tem perature drops markedly, that at night the skin of their legs will itch so that they can hardly get to sleep. Usually all Xhey need do then is to rub some cold cream or some oily lotion into the skin of their legs. In case this doesn't work, and the area of itchi ness is not large, carbolized petrolatum can be used.
