Medford Tribune 2nd SECTION MEDFORD, OREGON, WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 1958 Pages 1 to 6 300 Law Officers Te Attend Medford Conference Mav 1 9 About 300 members of law enforcement agencies in the 14-western states, Alaska and Canada are expected to at tend the ninth annual West ern States Crime conference in Bedford on May 19, 20- and 21, Detective Lt. Lyle Per kins, chairman of the event, told Jackson county chamber of commerce roundtable meet ing Monday noon. He said this would be the largest number to attend the conference and the first time the meeting has been held on the west coast. The conference was -first organized several years ago by Oregon and Ida ho police agencies to exchange information on safe burglars. The conference is a busin ness meeting for discussing safe burglars, their methods, past records and means of of transportation. Perkins not ed that several crimes are us ually solved at the confer ences by the information ex change. He explained the need of information exchange is very important as some safe bur glars travel as high as 150, 000 miles per year to "conduct business." Law enforcement officers present will represent city, county, state, federal and some private agencies, he not ed. The meetings will be held at the Elks' Temple, Fifth st. and Central ave. H. G. Mason, superintendent of the Oregon state police; Charles P. Cham plin, Medford police chief; and Eric Allen Jr., managing editor of the Mail Tribune will be the featured speakers at the meetings. The event will close with a banquet at the Rogue Valley Country club with James Chenoweth, chief deputy Unit ed States Marshal of the third judicial district in Alaska, as the featured speaker. Dr. Ray Elected Head Of Dental Researchers Dr. Eugene Ray was elected president of the Rogue Valley Dental Research group at a recent meeting. Dr. Lee Mel lish was elected secretary treasurer. The meeting was the last this season, and meetings will resume in the fall, Dr. Ray said. Other members of the group are Dr. Richard Fred erick, Dr. Gene Chamber lain, Dr. John Price, Dr. Law rence Ellis, Dr. John Rognaas and Dr. Bob Howe, who is a new member. Fred is a weeper and a wailer. One day he came to cry on Sally's shoulder about his wife's being such a spend thrift. He complained he can't get out of debt because of Geraldine's spending, and he begged Sally to show her how to economize and budget. Like a real little jerk, Sally goes ahead and gives Geral dine a lecture. Naturally Geraldine freezes up and first thing we know the welcome mat is no longer out for us at the home of the R's. Now it happens that I like this shmoe, Fred, despite all his faults. We have always had the greatest times to gether. I hate to see a bust-up over this nonsense. I feel that JLally should apologize to Geraldine. Sally D Apologize? Never! I did nothing wrong. I was trying to be a good true, hon est friend. I meant no harm and only did what I was asked to do to help out Fred. It was really all Fred's fault and I feel if he were any man at all he would ex plain everything to his wife. He really presented me with a pitiful picture and made me promise to speak to Geral dine at the first opportunity. I never did "deliver a lec ture" as George accuses me. I merely told her in as gentle a fashion as I knew that I consider it a wife's responsi bility to free her husband from as many money prob lems as she is able, and I showed her how I budget. I never even suggested that she do the same. I just thought she'd take the hint. It's not my fault that my good intentions went haywire. The Council: Is Sally a "good, true, honest friend"? Well, she probably means to be. But is she right? Definite ly not! Sally's good true, friendly act should coirectly have end ed before she lent Fred her shoulder to cry on. She could have put off his complaints about his wife in a gentle, hu ' morous way. She should have reject ed the idea that Geraldine in any way compares unfavor ably "To her.' . Most important, Sally should never have agreed to talk to Geraldine about the problem no matter how "gently and subtly." Since the matter had undobutedly been under dis cussion between Fred and Geraldine, "the ' hint" Sally gave probably hit like a blow on the head. Even worse, George has probably been go ing around feeling like kick ing himself for having "open ed up," displaying a certain disloyalty to his wife. Sally can expect no help from that quarter in the way of an "ex planation" to Geraldine. Should Sally apoligize? We don't think it would help. It would just dig up the whole mess. If George values Fred's friendship so highly, he should swallow his pride a bit and persist in trying to get to gether with him, with or with out "the girls." Eagles fo Elect Meeting Delegates Delegates to the state con vention will be elected by the Medford lodge of the Fra ternal Order of Eagles at a meeting Thursday at the hall, 219 West Main st., Medford. At the annual Mother's Day observance Sunday after noon, Mrs. Gail Ruth was the youngest mother present. Mrs. Jennie Young tied with a Gold Hill woman as the oldest, and Mrs. Ada Cooper was the mother present with the greatest number of chil dren. Roy R. Picard was general chairman, assisted by Nelda Heath and Doris Forbes. Liquor Control Group Holds Hearing A hearing was held in the county court house Tuesday morning by Oregon Liquor Control commission on charges that Barkley's tavern in Phoenix and Rainbow mo tel and grocery in Shady Cove had violated state liquor laws. The two businesses are charged with one violation each of selling liquor to min ors, according to Henry J. Detioff, hearings supervisor for the commission. He said the commission will meet June 4 on this and charges against other businesses. Yreka Firm Gets Mt. Shasta Project Sacramento S i n g 1 eton Construction company, Yreka, was awarded the contract for construction of the $611,000 Mt. Shasta High school with construction starting within a few days, according to the California department of schools. This is the fourth of several projects planned and now under construction in the dis trict. Yreka and Butte Valley High school projects are now nearing completion and the McCloud High school is under construction. Clatsop Pinball Operators File Action Astoria (IP) Clatsop coun ty pinball operators Tuesday sought a restraining order to block enforcement of Attor ney General Robert Y. Thorn ton's opinion defining free play pinball machines as gam bling devices. Freighter Jettisons Cargo of Lumber San Francisco (IP) The freighter Mary Olson reported Tuesday she had to jettison part of her cargo when she developed a "bad list" off Cape Mendocino in Northern Californi. The report from the freight er was picked "up by RCA's radio marine station. . It quoted the Mary Olson as saying she developed a "bad list to starboard" near the Blunts Reef light ship. The crew jettisoned a cargo of . lumber on the deck of the freighter and later the ship re ported she was all right. The Coast Guad said there was no emergency. Yreka Schools to Have Summer Class Yreka A summer school session for teachers in utiliz ing local resources will be held in Lava Beds National Mounment by Siskiyou coun ty schools. Dates for the session will be June 9 to 13. Dick Youse and John Quinn will be the instructors for classes, which include lectures, field trips, museum, study and individual projects. India Cattle Face Starvation Patna, India (IP) More than six million cattle face imminent starvation in the state of Behar because of a drought dating back almost to last monsoon period. The monsoon rains, brought floods in some areas, particu larly along the banks of the Koshi, Behar's "river of sor row." But larger parts of the state never had even a frac tion of the rains that threat en crops in most years. The state government esti mated the loss to the rice crop alone at over 50 per cent. Behar's food minister told the legislature that "paddy fields in the countryside pre sent a dismal appearance, and our farmers are engaged in a frantic effort to save the fields for the next season. "But," he added, "sagging stretches of the parched paddy fields at many places are hard to save." ' The Praja Socialist party of Behar charged that while the government contends the scarcity of food has not yet precipitated starvation condi tions among the people, about 12 million persons are report ed to be hit by the food short age.
