Chamber Holes Rise Jn New Inquiries On Settling Here A recent compilation of mail inquiries received by the Cham ber of Commerce from June through October indicates that interest in Medford and Jackson county as a place to live out number vacation inquiries more than two to one. q Don McNeil, manager of the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that the heavy season for vacation in quiries occurs from February through May and tends to slack off during the summer months. "After all," he said, "the vaca tionist is enjoying his outing during the summer not O dreaming about it and writing for travel literature." But in quiries regarding Jackson coun ty as a desirable place to live seem to show little if any sea sonal fluctuation and the volume has increased gradually over the years. Although the bulk of mail in quiries, both residential and vacation, come from California, weather conditions seem to have cn effect upon the volume of mail from residential prospects, McNeil said. For example, a se vere winter in the middle west and central states will usually give rise to a host of inquiries on Jackson county and specifically requesting informs tion on weather extremes. The Chamber staff has. noted sn increase of residential in quiries from Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona when summer temperatures in those areas have gone above normal limits. Reports of severe smog conditions in Southern Califor nia are invariably followed by an increase of residential in quiries from that area request ing specific information on weather and air pollution fac tors in Jackson county. Ads Could Help Officials of the Chamber of Commerce tourist committee have long felt that inquiries from prospective vacationists could be materially increased in the spring through a modest space advertising program. Ex periments in this field during . the early part of 1952, '54, and '55 led committee members to believe that a $5,000 space ad vertising program carried on in theOproper market areas could produce between three and four thousand requests for vacation gales literature per year. Committee members have long looked upon space adver tising as a means of getting area sales literature into the hands of prospective vacationers dur ing the early part of the year when vacation plans are being decided by family groups. The modest budget for advertising Jackson county as a vacation area has not permitted the move into the field of space advertis ing as a means of marketing the county's recreational attractiveness. 71 . i LAZY ROBBERS New York IP Two lary holdup men apparently ordered their prey by telephone Thurs day. Portland Service Station Held Up Portland (W A service station was held up early today and the attendant told police he may have wounded the bandit as the man fled. The station robbed was Van's service station in north Port land. It was the third time in a month the same station has been held up. Jack E. Cheney, 62, Hills boro, told police he fired at the robber as he fled and knocked him down. "He fell, then got up and shot back at me." Cheney said the robber was the same man who held up the station Oct. 26 but not the same cne who held it up Oct. 18. Request for American Aid Funds Turned Down Taipei, Formosa (IP) The United States has turned down a Nationalist Chinese request for American aid funds to boost the pay for Nationalist employees and military personnel, it was disclosed today. Government officials said, how ever, that the cabinet has de cided to go ahead anyway with an across-the-board raise for 100,000 government workers and 600,000 servicemen. The cost to the American-supported govern ment will be at least $18 million and where the money is to, come from is the big question in parliament.
