Friday, September 20, 1957 Doris Day Building New Home By' GAY PAULEY United Press Women's Editor New York dPi Doris Day, the singer, is humming like a decorator these days. 1 Her conversations is sprinkled with everything from f color schemes to news that the .oldest sycamore tree in Beverlyj Hills, Calif, is on her property! "It is an ancient thing.f said Miss Day. "Has had several op erations. Stands right in the middle of our patio." 1 "Our patio" is part of a new house she and her husband, Martin Melcher, are building. They've been renters for the six years of their marriage. "It is all one-story, modern, has lots of white brick inside, and I'm using chamois colored rugs on the floor. I want a' lot of the chamois and white tn the rest of the furnishings," sajd the blonde actress who came to New York to help promote her new picture, "Pajama Game," and mentioned it once during an interview. Has No Living Room "The house has no living room, but a great big 'living area," she said. "One section is a soda fountain. Nobody n our family drinks anything stronger than pop." The family consists of hus band Marty, her manager also; Terry, 15, her son by a previous marriage; and two French poodles. Terry, who col lects records, including D. Day hits, wears even more freckles than his famous mom. "But he's not sensitive about them," she said. "Golly, when I was a kid I used lemon juice and cucumbers . . . every foleach I could think of to get rid of them Then one day a man told me he thought freckles were cute. What a switch. I stayed out in the sun all next day." Doris Day, born Doris, Kap pelhoff of Cincinnati, Ohio, has made 21 pictures since she "crashed" Hollywood in 1947. She plans to go right on mak ing more "No television or Broadway for me," said the singer-actress. "I got enough to do as it is. And I want time between pictures to see people and family, to come back to civilization." The Melchers took a vacation drive through New England aft er their New York visit. Son Terry is enrolling in a school in Connecticut. Then, it's back to California to "see what new building crisis faces us," she said: "I'm not worried about the contractor and the house, but about the contractor and some of my fans." Finding the actress will oc cupy the house, the fans have been p'estering the builder to "ask Mrs. Melcher to send us a picture." Said Miss Day: "He informed me before we left, he is not my secretary." Help Yourself .to Happiness This column is one of a seriet on marriage and family problems which appears weekly in this paper. It presents problems on everyday living and attempts to bring you the most expert opinion in this area. Headers are invited to present their problems. More quarrels than anyone can ever count are based on NERVES. The bored or frus trated wife and the overworked or professionally disappointed husband may stage a knockdown-drag-out argument over almost ludicrous trifles, an ar gument which may mushroom from the original "ashes on the rug" contention to in-laws, fi nances, religion, politics, and the blonde at the country club dance last year. Tensions may touch off disguised antagonisms in a series of skirmishes or in a great explosion which can ruin a mar riage. Many people are, as they often Gymnasium Classes Set A schedule of women's gym nasium classes at Medford YMCA has been planned by the phy sical director, Gordon Williams, and will begin Tuesday, Sep tember 24. When one bundle of nerves marries another, friction is al most inevitable. Marriage rarely cures an emotionally unstable individual, especially if it in volves two unstable folk and the common problems of cooperative living. Decreased liberty and in creased frustrations may in fact aggravate the problem in both men and women. Here at the American Insti tute we see marriages burdened by difficulties which originate in the emotional adjustment of one or both partners an en tanglement, if you will, of the "bundle of nerves" which mar ried each other. The husband may fly into a temper at the sight of his .wife's new hat or because the wife has kept him waiting for dinner. The wife may indulge in a tantrum because her husband has flicked ashes on the rug or has refused her a new fur coat. The marriage coun selor knows that such eruptions are common symptoms of emo tional maladjustments. An intelligent couple can do much toward helping their own situation. The wife can wait to display her new hat or ask for her new coat until "after a dis cussion of budget and never when her husband is tired, hun gry, or ill. A problem looks easier to a man who is well-fed and at peace with his world. Both w partners should make a genuine effort to be punctual and patient, to talk out their troubles and try to arrive at a mutually satisfactory under standing. Judgments and de cisions should never be made late at night, at the end of an exhausting experience, or when one suffers a headache or indi gestion. Both mates may be working too hard, and allow ances should be made for fa tigue. Indeed, many problems disappear with 'more rest .and relaxation. If the problems do not clear up with care, the couple may have to seek the aid of an ex perienced counselor who can get at the roots of the difficulty and aid in easing tensions.
