So I note it said. That's wrong. Thomas J. O'Ferrell of De Ridder, La., now 82, was there. In fact, he in formed the Illinois Central Rail road of the death of Casey Jones. Incidentally, Mr. O'Fer rell says the original version of the immortal ballad titled "Casey Jones" was composed by two Negro railroad workers named Andy Cal and Spay Dick son. He knows because, attract- Unionists Face Hostile Brothers Chicago TO Two mem bers of the AL-CIO Executive Council will have some explain ing to do to their union brothers during the four-day council meeting opening here today. Carpenters' Union President Maurice A. Hutcheson, one of the two, pleaded the Fifth Amendment recently when ques tioned about an Indiana high way scandal by a Senate Public Works Subcommittee. The AFL-CIO Executive Council has gone on record op posing use of the Fifth Amend . ment by union officials in in vestigations of corruption. The other council member who may be called on the carpet Is Teamsters' Secretary-Treasur- . er Jphn F. English. English, who succeeded dis credited . Teamsters' President Dave Beck on the Executive Council, was quoted as saying he would clean the Teamsters dirty linen. AFL-CIO sources noted that President George Meany is still wainting for wash day in the 1,-1 400,000-member trucking union. Fourth Suspect in Melchoir Holdup Held Missoula, Mont. TO The a fourth and last suspect in the Lauritz Melchior robbery was arrested here Saturday night on a tip from Los Angeles police. The suspect was Richard Mc 11, 38. He denied any knowl edge of the crime. He is wanted in Los Angeles on an indictment chargeinj kidnaping and rob bery sjn Francisco police arrested the third suspect, Louis G. Spiv- k, several veeks ago. Two oth ers were arrested three days after the $100,000 robbery of the singer's luxurious home od June 18. - Chilsquin Couple In Forced Landing Stlamath Falls iy A Chll oquin couple was reported safe Sund. after an alert had been called when their light plane was reported missing. Mr. and Mrs. Fred G. Mark wardt had taken off at 6:13 a.m. for a "fly-in" breakfast at Jo seph some 300 miles away. Their plane was reported over due at 9 a.m. and rescue groups were alerted. The alert was called off when Markwardt reported he had run into clouds near La Grande and had decided to turn back toward home. He became low on gas and finally decideS to land in a field north of Klamath Falls "between cattle and shocks of hay." The landing gear of the plane O was damaged but the Mark ward ts escaped injury. FREE SAMPLE Benton Harbor, Mich. !W Police Saturday waited for an -artistic prankster to claim his macabre handiwork left outside a local mortuary. A man's head, sculptured from clay, was found outside the mortuary with a 12 inch knife plunged into the top of the skull. Sidelights ' Pat Meagher of New York City has been a member of the Typographical Union known as "Big Six" for 68 years. If that isn't the record for long mem bership in the same union, what is? . . . What's your nomination for the most beneficial and out standing invention of the past 80 years? How about the tele phone being rated that honor? Passing By Allyn Whalen. Red-haired in dustrial designer. In originating the color scheme for the Roose velt Raceway "Dream Track" in teriors, Allyn is said to have used 203 different colors. That certainly is a lot of different colors. I can duly think of 162 different colors. Anyway, my favorite color is still 'blue. And the color I like least is that cur ious shade called, "shocking pink." Curious Food Demand for curious food seems countrywide. Nino's Res taurant, Westbury, L. I., , fea tures and reports a consistent demand for French Fried Grass hoppers, Alligator Soup au Sherry, Kangaroo Tail soup and Fried Agave Worms on toast. Did you hear about the Lond oner who sought to baffle a res taurant which boasted of the variety of its menu items. "Ele phant Steak, well done," he said to the waiter. "African or In dian elephant, sir," said the waiter without batting an eye lash. "Indian elephant," said the man. Shortly after the wait er returned saying: "Am sofry, sir, but I am afraid you will have to take African elephant. It is near closing time and the chef is reluctant to start cutting up another Indian elephant for just one order." Vocalists Why do male vocalists domin ate the best selling phonograph record lists? At times not one feminine singer appears in the top 10 record sellers. The an swer seems to be that the' great majority of record buyers are young women. They are not particularly attracted by the vo alizing of females. They want male singers who can give them that "thrilling" feeling. Fiery Redhead Reference to Amelia Bloom er speaks of her "native Bost on." Amelia was born in Hom er, N. Y. Her maiden name was Jenks. She married one Dexter C. Bloomer. She was a fiery redhead and campaigned, as you know, for dress reform for wo men which included wearing that curious style of trousers known as "bloomers." This brings to mind there was once a semi-professional, all-female baseball club known as "The Bloomer Girls." It was often claimed this club used ringers, that is, men players, especially pitchers, who impersonated wo men. But that- is another story. Globe Trotter Queen Elizabeth of England has become quite a globe trot ter. She hasn't broken Mrs. El eanor Roosevelt's record yet but she is still a young woman. In comparison. Queen Victoria who enjoyed a very long life rarely left home. Farthest she ever traveled was to Florence, Italy. She was fond of the Irish and so went to Cork once and Dub lin once. TOWN HOLDS FETE Guilford, Vt. (IP) The popu lation of Guilford, 1.600 strong, turned out Sunday for a mam moth "all-day" barbecue ar ranged by farmer Warren Frank lin to honor the return of his 21-year-old identical twin sons, Alfred and Wilfred, from the Army. Franklin's neighbors bought tickets to the barbecue at S3 each when Franklin was unable to finance by himself a 2,600-pound Holstein steer, 3.000 buijs, 3,000 ears of corn 500 pounds of potato salad 2000 bot tles of beer and soda pop and "lots of ice cream for the children."
