Eisenhower that her hus band WILL BECOME an expert on Ceylon even if he isn't one NOW. She says a lot of the criticism of him came from "away off in left field" and adds that in her opinion he is a good citizen who wrfnts to serve his country and has the ability to do so. T ET'S take a sharp look at this - man Gluck. What's wrong with him? YlfELL, for one thing, he has " some money. He contribut ed $36,000 to two Eisenhower ca npaigns 18,000 in 1952 and arfothr $18,000 in 1956. He'was appointed ambassador to Ceylon a few weeks back, and when his appointment came up for confirmation in the sen ate he was fried out in the pan. In the course of the frying he was forced to admit that he didn't know the name of the Ceylonese prime minister. That did it. He got the horse laugh from all the professionals. ' WATT a minute. Do you know the name of the prime minister of Ceylon? I don't either. But I don't think that disqualifies me for service to my country. I could look it tip pretty quickly. He was asked if he had no ticed the recent report of the committee sent by United Na tions to study Hungary. Did you notice It? Neither did I. But again I don't think that would disqualify me for public service. I could soon find it and read it. H1 fE WAS then asked: "What are the problems in Ceylon you think you can deal with?" According to the official tran script, this was his reply: "One of the problems are THE t'i PEOPLE there. I believe I can fX least I think I can establish Vi good relationship and a good f feeling among the PEOPLE there toward the United States." A FEW weeks ago in San Fran- Cisco Virgil Pinckley, the distinguished editor and publish er of the Los Angeles Mirror, who has been for a couple of decades a world traveler and an able commentator on world af fairs, told the American Society of Newspaper Editors that the principal defect of our foreign service in Southeast Asia (Cey lon is in Southeast Asia) is that the professional striped - pants diplomts we send there become so involved in the social proto col of the capitals -to which they are assigned that they fail utter ly to get over to the PEOPLE the real warmth and friendliness of the people of the United States and their desire to be helpful to peoples all over the world. He added that if our diplo matic representatives are to be genuinely useful they must get away from $e upper social crust in the countries to which they are sent and GET DOWN AMONG THE PEOPLE. T ET'S not sell this man Gluck short at least yet. Maybe he has something. At any rate, his wife, who knows through the wilderness because of an injured leg. He lived on fish, reptiles and deer. An important factor in his survival, he said, was the thought of "God, my wife and my baby daughter." On his return, the couple said they planned a second honey moon in Florida. But it never came off. A short while later, Mrs. Steeves and the baby moved in with her mother in Fairfield, outside Bridgeport. Steevtjf took up residence in Boiling Air Force Base in Wash ington where is awaiting new orders. , In Discussion Stage Mrs. Steeves' lawyer, Paul Cullinan, admitted Sunday that a divorce was "in the discussion stage." He would not elaborate. .But Mrs. Steeves said the rift dated from before the accident. The couple has been married for two years. Steeves said in Washington that his wife told him a week ago that her mind was made up on the divorce question. "It's definitely not my deci sion," he said. "It's hers." It has been available, howev er, for some weeks to selected and key figures of the Eisenhow er administration. Vaccine shots' for Cabinet members were available .last week. New anti-epidemic medications usually are tried out first on federal personnel. In the case of the flu vaccine there is a definite reaction in some cases. The government's information on these reactions is not nearly as complete as some federal phys icians would like. If the President himself has received the vaccine it is cot known. At least one of his Cab inet members has turned it down because of an allergy record. This does not mean the vac cine should not be used by the public as soon as possible. When there is a reaction it isn't very serious; at least, according to present public records. could mean that he might get a protective shot before he leaves.
