Ivy, of Philadelphia, recently told the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, eight babies in every 1,000 are born with some phy sical defect. Among the five most common defects, in or der of occur rence, are club feet, cleft lip or palate, an extra finger, a spina bifida (a small tumor on the lower part of the spine due to a defect in the uniting of the two halves of the spine), and hypospadias (a cleft-like defect in the con struction of the penis). Parents should remember that today club feet can generally be straightened out pretty well. A cleft lip or palate can be repaired. A superfluous finger can be removed, and a hypospa dias can usually be repaired. The spina bifida can sometimes be helped. In addition to these congenital defects, there are several types of congenital de fect in the heart; there are the defects due to a failure of the brain to develop properly, there are big birth' marks, and there are ruptures of several types. When a child has one abnor mality he is very likely to have several. About one in five of the children with a bad con genital anomaly will die with in the first year. Sometimes, although this is hard to accept, the parents agree that it is a blessing. Transplanting Skin Many a child who was badly burned should have skin grafted onto him. Even if skin taken from his mother does not sur vive more than a month or so, it may tide him over and save his life. For years experts in this field have been carrying out researches hoping to find some way in which the child or the person who g.ves the skin can be treated so that the child's body will not soon reject the transplant. Now, Dr. Lyn don A. Peer reports that grafts from a mother to a child some times will stay for several months. This is not true of grafts taken from the father. Much work is being done, transplanting skin from one ani mal to another, and from these experiments much that is help ful is being learned. Galena, Kan. Nite Siskiyou Band Camp In Last Week at SOC Ashland-The first annual Sis kiyou band camp is in its final week on the campus of Southern Oregon college according to Glenn T. Matthews founder and coordinator of the camp. Director of the band is Clar ence Sawhill, nationally-known conductor, clinician and adjudi cator, who has already served as band clinician at a number of camps this summer including the national music camp at Inter lochen, Mich. Sawhill is director of bands at UCLA. Matthews explained that the camp was open to both students and teachers and that many of the participants had come from as far away as Ritzville, Wsh., and Livermore, Calif.
