Hoffa and king pin of New York's labor rackets, was call ed from a jail cell by Senate in vestigators today to answer a string of sensational charges. Talk Not Expected The Senate Rackets Commit tee harbored small hope that Dio, described as an alumnus of the old Murder Inc. mob, would Oregon Man Goes Berserk in Hotel; Killed by Police Indianapolis, Ind. W An Oregon man went berserk in a hotel today. He wounded two po licemen and shot at a 19-year-old girl before he was killed by officers. The shooting occurred at the Sheraton-Lincoln Hotel. The dead man was identified , as Noland Carter, 29, Portland. Authorities said Carter pulled out a gun at the registration t desk of the hotel when an assist 2 ant manager refused to accept his check in payment for a room 5 until he checked with Carter's bank, i, Two Held at Bay I Carter held two hotel em I ployees at bay with the gun and t iired at a young woman, an in- nocent bystander, who was j walking into the hotel lobby ; with her mother. t Then Carter fled to his room I on the twelfth floor, j Police, called to the scene by Assistant Manager Robert Cal- lis and ma it re d'hotel Richard J Spikerman, whom Carter had held at gunpoint, fired tear gas I through a transom in the room ! in an effort to subdue Carter, whose shots through the door wounded the two officers. He did not respond. But Rob- ert B. Hall, also of Portland, and a woman came out of the room and surrendered, police said. T Shots Fired Through Door I Patrolman Jack Stratton said he then fired six shots through , the door. Other officers also fired into the room and shot i the lock off the door. Vhen they 5 entered, Carter lay dead on the floor. Two automatic pistols lay S near his body. The 19-year-old woman the gunman shot in the lobby was ; identified as Mrs. Constance J Ciale, Crawfordsville, Ind. A police sergeant said a check i writing machine and blank checks from many banks were t' found later in the room shared by Carter and Hall. x ' The wounded policemen were C Identified as Ray Cooper, a traf i' fic patrolman, and Detective Sgt j James Parlain. Monahan was thrown from - 1 car as it crashed over an ' embankment and investigating officers said he apparently was killed instantly as his head ' struck rocks. The Hayes car also went over the embankment. Golden Hot Dog Added To Queen's Gifts London Ut Queen Eliza beth II, who last month gave visiting American lawyers a feast of hotdogs at a Bucking ham Palace garden party, added a golden hot do to her collec tion of gifts from admirers to day. The valuable but inedible gift was sent by a Chicago meat packing company with a note that it was "in grateful ac knowledgement of her majesty's gracious participation in our national hot dog week." Kennedy said the committee wanted to know Dio's role in establishment of several "paper locals" of the giant Teamsters Union, which the committee charges was done to help Hoffa rig an election and win control of all Teamsters in New York. The committee also summon ed three officers of the "paper" locals Nate Gordon of Team ster Local 651, and Abe Brier and Sydney Hodes of Local 362. Typical of Switch Brier and Hodes were listed as officials of Local 649 of the AFL United Auto Workers in New York before turning up as officers of Teamster Local 362. The UAW-AFL local was domi nated by Dio, also known as Dio guardi. Kennedy indicated this was typical of the switch whereby Dio, as New York director of the UAW-AFL, shifted his henchmen into the Teamsters to staff the "paper locals" set up in Novem ber. 1955. , Adverse Winds Force Atomic Test Delay Las Vegas (W Adverse winds forced the Atomic Ener gy Commission early today to postpone for 24 hours the fir ing of its 12th nuclear device of the 1957 test ' series at the Nevad Proving grounds. Scientists at a final briefing within two hours of shot time scheduled for 3:45 a.m. (P.S.T.) decided that winds could carry a stream of fallout over a popu lated area east of the test site. The much delayed test, called "Shasta," was rescheduled for the same time Friday. The AEC had hoped to get back on schedule for triggering the "Shasta' device -which was ready to fire July 29 but had been delayed by weather con ditions. The. test calls for the "below nominal" yield device to be set off from a 500-foot tower. Forest Fire Rages In Idaho Country Hailey, Idaho--nP) A big for est fire raged through more tim ber and brush in the Stanley basin today, but forest officials said firefighters finally appeared to be "getting it beat down.". Fire Dispatcher Gene Rodger said the 455 men on the fire line had contained the blaze within about 19 miles of fire lines which surrounded the estimated 1,600 acres covered by the fire. He said most of the new blazes dur ing the night were in brush and trees between the burn and fire lines. Rodger said he would not list the fire as under control because a stiff wind still could whip the flames into an inferno which would jump to timber across the fire lines and "that country is known for its high winds." Anaconda Joins in Copper Price Cut New York (IP) Anaconda company today went along with other major copper producers in .cutting the price on electro lytic copper in ihe domestic market by ZA cent to28V2 eents a pound. Phelps Dodge Corp. initiated the new round last Tuesday and Kenuecott Copper Corp. prompt ly followed. The decline, which drops the price of copper 17Vz cents be low the record, 46-cent level prevailing Feb. 17 to July 10, 1956, follows continued price drops of the metal in world markets. . Pioneer Radio Producer Succumbs at San Jose San "Jose, Calif. (IP! Pioneer . radio producer Yylie Jay Hanna, 70, one of the pro ducers of Jack Benny's first radio show, died at San Jose Hospital here Wednesday. Hanna, who ' also produced such well known shows on radio as "Gangbusters" and "Counter spy," retired 10 years ago and moved to San Jose five years ago. Hanna started his radio career in San Francisco in 1929 and mover to New York the next year where he worked with several large advertising agen cies. Thunday, August 8, 1957 5,693 Visit Museum During Month of July Jacksonville A total of 5,693 persons visited the Jack sonville museum during July, an increase of 732 over July last year, according to the museum monthly report. The attendance last month was the greatest for anp July since the museum opened in 1950. Visitors since the opening 258,495. Among gifts presented to the institution were pictures of early-day pioneers and other memoirs. Visitors last month represent ed 41 states, the District of Col umbia, Alaska, Hawaii, Peru, Mexico, Pakistan, Norway and England. Cub Scouts from Drew, Brovnie Scouts from Medford, and the Nazarene Caravan club,' Medford, also toured the museum. A reunion picnic honoring classmates of 60 years ago was held on the grounds Sunday, July 21. Mrs. Nettie Thompson, who taught the Forest Creek school in 1897-1899, arranged the event. Bowen reported that a station wagon driven by Mrs. Rose Anne Rasmussen, 59, of route 1, box 163, Gold Hill, was going north on Highway 99 when it was struck from the side by a pickup operated by Chester field McKibben, 72, of route 2, box 865, Central Point. McKib ben's pickup was crossing the highway west on Maple st., he said. After the impact, the station wagon skidded into a parked station wagon, owned by Rich ard Norris, Central Point, then took out shrubbery and a one half inch water stand pipe, halt ing against the brick wall of the Rogue Valley Creamery build ing, Bowen said. Both drivers received cuts on their hands and arms, Bowen reported and were treated . by a Central Point physician. JAR REAL VALUE! 99 Par cant Meat Packers Warned Of Destruction if Freight Rates Cut Klamath Falls (IP) The West Coast meat packing industry will be destroyed if freight rates are reduced on dressed meats shipped from the Middle West to the Pa cific Coast, labor was warned Wednesday here at the state AFL-CIO convention. Elmer McClure.'master of the Oregon state Grange, said, "the rate reduction will destroy the packing industry on this coast." He urged AFL-CIO delegates to fight a proposed Interstate Com merce Commission rate reduc tion plan. Speaking of Oregon's tax structure, McClure said that "Oregon's tax structure is very favorable and so far as the indi vidual is concerned we stand better than California, Washing ton or Idaho.
