Grass Fire Medford fire de partment extinguished a grass fire beside Biddle rd. near Lawnsdale rd. at 5:52 p.m. yes terday. The fire was probably caused by a discarded cigaret, firemen said. Word Received Word has been received here of the death of Mrs. Fred Merrill of Lan caster, Calif.- Mrs. Merrill was a niece of Mrs. J. O. N. Poling, and a cousin of Mrs. Nick De Witt, and. Mrs. Lucian Van Gor den, all of Medford. Reckless Driving A 17-year-old Central Point boy was fined $30 in Central Point municipal court yesterday after being ar rested for reckless driving, ac cording to Wallace Bowen, chief of police. The boy's driver's li cense was suspended for '30 days. Anderson, all Democrats, reported after, the talks that nothing definite was worked out. Hope for Understanding They said, however, that they hoped an understanding could be achieved resolving the con troversy "to everyone's satisfac tion." Prather has threatened to shoot anyone who tries to carry out the eviction order. He kept his .30-.30 rifle and .38 caliber pistol close at hand. The wrinkled rancher pointed out to newsmen a spot near his house where he wants to be buried "if I am shot fighting off the Army." "I'm going to die on this land one way or another," Prather said. Curtain time for all plays is 8:30 p.m. Obituaries KNUTE ELLEFSON Services for Knute Ellefson. 54, of Butte Falls, who died Tuesday will be held at Conger-Morris Friday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Howard Simmonds of the Butte Falls Community Bible church will officiate. Commit tal will be in Siskiyou Memorial park. , Mr. Ellefson was born Dec. 15, 1902, in Milan, Minn. . He came to southern Oregon nine years ago, residing in Butte Falls until his death. He was married Mar. 14, 1921, in Min neapolis, to Carol Johnson, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, William Carl Norling, and Elmo F. Ellefson, both of Butte Falls; three brothers, Edward Ellefson, Schenectady, N.Y.; Pe ter Ellefson, Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Albert Ellefson, Los Angeles, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Lodge, Cabins Burn In Blue Mountains Pendleton HP) Fire this morning destroyed the. main lodge and five out of about 30 cabins at the Lehman Hot Springs, in the Blue Mountains about 10 miles from Ukiah. Damage to the main lodge was estimated at S15.000. It housed a kitchen, recreation cen ter, dormitory, dressing rooms, coffee shop, snack bar and about 35 rooms. The fire was reported by a Umatilla National Forest ranger who saw a large puff of smoke and flames shooting out of the lodge. He radioed Pendleton for estry headquarters and fire fighting equipment was dispatch ed. The firemen 'kept the blaze from spreading into timber around the area. JAMES H. CHAPLIN " Military graveside services for James Henry Chaplin, 64, of Gold Hill, who died Tuesday night in a local hospital, will be held at Rock Point cemetery, Gold Hill, Friday at 3 p.m. A military detail from N the VA Domiciliary at Camp White will assist. Mr. Chaplin was born April 17, 1893, in Livingston, Guate mala, and had lived in Gold Hill for the past 11 years. He was married April 14, 1943, in San Francisco, to - Josephine Schenkberg, who survives. -He saw service in France in World War I serving from Aug. 6, 1918 to July 21,' 1919. Survivors, besides his wife, include a brother, Richard C. Chaplin, Santa Cruz, Calif.; and two sisters, Mrs Harry Rogers, Fresno, Calif.; and Mrs. Ida May Wood, Central Point. MRS. CORA M. TAYLOR Funeral services for Mrs. Cora M. Taylor, 66, Rogue River, who died Wednesday in a Medford hospital,, will be held at the Pres byterian church in Rogue River at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Dr. Floyd Barnett will of ficiate. Interment will be in the Woodville cemetery. Perl Funeral home in in charge of ar rangements. Mrs. Taylor was born in Ash land May 15. 1891. She was a member of Live Oak Grange. Survivors include her hus band, Rollin F. Taylor, Rogue River; two brothers, A. J. Farra, Eagle Point; and Herman Farra, Central Point; and a nephew. Bob Farra, Eagle Point. CHARLES L. BERGSTROM Funeral services for Charles L. Bergstrom, 84, who died Wed nesday, will be held at Perl Funeral home Friday at 10:30 a.m. He was a long-time resident of Oregon and resided in Med ford the past 10 months. The family home is at 825 Grant st. Mr. Bergstrom, who was born in Sweden Sept. 15, 1872, is sur vived by two daughters, Miss Dorothy Bergstrom, Portland, and Mrs. Katherine Broemer, Medford; four sons, Carl Berg strom, of Fort Dix, Calif,, David Bergstrom, of Medford, Harvey Bergstrom, of Boise, Ida., and John Bergstrom, of Fort Klam ath; and 11 grandchildren. .The Rev. G. H. Hillerman of Zion Lutheran church will of ficiate. Cremation will be held at Siskiyou Crematorium. Wayne Grier Named To Advisory Board Salem Wynne P. Grier, presi dent of -the General Credit Serv ice of Medford, has been named to the Oregon Collection Agen cies Advisory board by Gov. Robert D. Holmes. Grier is first vice president and president-elect of the Ameri can Collectors association, Inc., and succeeds Orin Amundson, Portland, to jthe five-member board. Gov. Holmes' also reappointed Portland attorney Ray L. Mc Grew to another two-year term. He is Oregon director for the national association. Signatures Obtained To Block School Bill Portland API Elmer Mc Clure, master of the Oregon Grange, said today an estimated 7,000 signatures have been certi fied on petitions seeking to block the newly enacted school reorganization bill. McClure said that the Grang ers are optimistic about obtain ing the necessary 24,017 certi fied signatures needed to block the bill. The main list fluctuated nar rowly through most of the day. Finally the rails led a general downturn. Higher freight rates given the carriers two days ago were seen as inadequate to meet increased costs. Losses in the railroads ranged to more than a point.
