Mc Cabe, 190t East Main street, Medford, announce the engage ment of their daughter, Sylvia Meade, to Bernard Paul Kelly son of Judge and Mrs. Edward C. Kelly. 906 West Fourth street, Medford. Miss ?.IcCabe attended St. Mary's High school and Rosary college, River Forest, 111. She received her bachelor of arts de gree in English literature this spring from Seattle University. Mr. Kelly attended St. Mary's High school, Medford," Columbia Preparatory school in Portland, and Southern Oregon college. He is a graduate of the University of Oregon Law School and re cently completed graduate work in law at Georgetown univer sity, Washington, D.C. He served for two years in the United States Army and is a member of the Phi Delta Phi law fra ternity. He is presently associat ed in law practice with his sister, Miss Noreen Kelly. Formal announcement of the engagement was made last eve ning at a family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Cooney, 301 Valley View drive, honoring the birthday of Mrs. McCabe. Parents and relatives of the engaged couple attended. The wedding date has been set for October 5 at Sacred Heart Catholic church. f :'K i ' 9 V Parents Announce Engagement News Mr. and Mrs. Paul Selby, 2427 Lyman avenue, Medford, an nounce the engagement of their daughter, Margaret, to John Philip Selby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Selby ot waiKer avenue, Ashland. Miss Selby was graduated from Medford High school. Mr. Selby is a graduate of Ashland High school and attended the University of Oregon and South ern Oregon college. He is a mem ber of Theta Delta Phi honorary fraternity and served two years in the United States Army in Aucsburg, Germany. The couple plan to attend Florida Southern college at Lakeland, Fla., this fall. The wedding is planned for August 18 at St. Mark's Episco pal church. Relatives Visit In Edwards Home Dr. and Mrs. C. M. Beam, Asheville, N. C., are visiting rel atives in Medford this week. They are the grandparents of C. Keith Edwards and Lawrence Edwards, 1016 Winchester ave nue. Also visiting In the Edwards' home are Mr. and Mrs. J. Herbert Stone, parents of Mrs. C. K. Edwards, and Richard Stone, Portland, and Mrs. Greg ory J. Barry, Mrs. Edwards' aunt from Greenwich, Conn. Other visitors are Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Edwards, parents of the Edwards brothers, formerly of Medford and now of Los Ange les. Anderson of Ashland announce the engagement of their daugh ter, June, to Lloyd H. Wales, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Glenn Coxen, Greybull, Wyo. Miss Anderson is a graduate of Flintridge Sacred Heart aca demy at' Pasadena, Calif., and attended the University of Southern California, Los An geles. She is a member of Gamma Phi Beta social sorority. Mr. Wales attended Casper Jhjnior college, Casper, Wyo., and is employed by the Crane Company in Medford. He is making his home in Central Point. An August wedding is planned. Visitors Leave Valley After Annual Visit Major General and Mrs. Amos A. Fries, who have been visit ing in the valley, left Wednes day for their home in Washing ton. D.C. Gen. and Mrs. Fries were married in Medford and both graduated from the Medford High school class of 1893. After graduating from West Point the general served in the Army in World War I. En route to Med ford the couple visited in Los Angeles and attended a Cham ber of Commerce luncheon at which Gen. Fries received a cita tion for engineering work there some years ago. The evening of July 7 a fam ily dinner for the Fries was held in the Medford hotel. Attending were Mrs. Etta Purkeypile, sis ter of the general, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fred Slagle entertained the visitors at her home, 103 South Holly street, Monday eve ning, July 8. Guests included c'.assmates. Gen. and Mrs. Fries planned to pass through Portland where they will be guests of the gen eral's brother, Archie Fries. Kathleen Davies And William Oyler Engaged to Wed Eagle Point Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Davies of route 1, box 85, Eagle Point, announce the engagement of their daughter, Kathleen, to William Oyler of Ashland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Verne Oyler of Sacramento, Calif. Miss Davies is a graduate of Southern Oregon college and is at present serving as receptionist for Doctor E. L. Harlow of Medford. Mr. Oyler is a graduate of Stanford university and is a member of the Oregon Shake-1 spearean Festival company. " "il' V Miss Kathleen Davies Bride-Elect Honored by Shower Monday Miss Sue Carolyn Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester D. Harris, 707 South Oakdale avenue, was honored at a bridal shower Monday, July 8, at the home of Mrs. Robert Swindler, 528 South Ivy street. Hostesses were Mrs. Swindler and Mrs. Kenneth Phillips. Miss Harris is the bride-elect of Merril Kenneth Hval, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Hval, Port land. The wedding will be held at three o'clock this afternoon at the First Presbyterian church. Yellow gladiolus and daisies decorated the rooms for the shower. Fourteen friends and relatives of the honored guest at tended. BPWC Plans Picnic Thursday Medford Business and Profes sional Women's club will hold a pot luck picnic supper at Tou Velle state park at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 18. Guests are welcome. Mullin, 209 South Orange street, Med ford, announce the engagement of their daughter, Donna Ann, to Lieutenant Raymond L. Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gale W. Smith of Eugene. Both Miss Mullin and Lt. Smith are graduates of Med ford High school. Miss Mullin is employed as a secretary in Los Angeles. Lt. Smith has com pleted Naval flight training and is assigned to a Marine Observa tion squadron on Okinawa. Prior to entering the Naval Air Corps !he was graduated from the Uni Iversity of Oregon. No date has been set for the wedding. 4 Residents Return After Bermuda Trip Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Bender and daughter, Gail, returned home early this week after vacationing in the eastern United States and Bermuda. The Benders' home is at 1941 Westerlund drive. Mr. and Mrs. Bender were in Seattle June 7 for the gradua tion of their daughter from the Helen Bush school there. They planned the trip East as a grad uation present. The family flew to New York where they met Miss Ann Gar ner, Medford, who had flown tHere from this city. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Garner, 2009 East Main street. The four Medford people then flew to the islands where they stayed at the Eldow Surf club. While there they were joined by Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Bender Jr., son and daughter-in-law of the Benders, from Seattle, Wash. The Medford residents stayed at Bermuda until June 20, then left by plane for New York. Miss Garner continued home, arriv- ing the next day. The Benders stayed in the East, returning home this week. j Miss Garner graduated from I Medford Senior High -school this ! spring and plans to enter Wil- j lamette university in the fall to ! major in pre-nursing. Miss Bender will enter the University of Washington in Se attle and plans to major in dental hygiene. Mrs. Brandt, Mrs. Petty and Miss Hansen are sisters and it was the first time in 53 years that they had been together. Visit Here Mrs. Virgil Corbett, and daughters Christie and Kathy, of Sepulveda, Calif., are visiting this month at the home of Mrs. Corbett's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Sands, 301 South Grove land avenue. They will remain in Medford until August 1. Valley Couple Now at Home in Aberdeen, Md. Miss Betty Ann Silva, daugh ter of Mrs. Wesley Gilman, 4230 Hilsinger drive, Medford, and Frank B. Silva of Eagle Point, became the bride of Donald J. Robinson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Robinson. Central Point, in a ceremony held Monday, June 17. in Aberdeen, Md. Mrs. Gilman traveled with her daughter to Maryland last month to attend the wedding. The bridegroom is stationed with the United States Army at the Aber deen Proving Grounds where the newlywed couple will make their home. The bride is a graduate of Phoenix schools. Mr. Robinson attended Central .Point and Eagle Point schools and was em ployed at Fir Ply corporation at Camp White prior to joining the Army in October, 1956. The bridegroom has just com pleted his United States Navy service and is employed at Tim ber Products company. The new lywed couple are making their home at 230Vi South Central Rudd-Biden Rites Held in California Mr. and Mrs. Ernest N. Biden are making their home at 711 East Jackson street, following their marriage Monday, May 27, at the First Christian church in Sacramento. Calif. The bride is the former Mrs. Agnes W. Rudd of Medford. j Present at the ceremony were ! Mrs. L. W. Brasher, sister of the bride, Earle O'Brien and Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Wiley of Nevada City, aunt and uncle of the bride. Following the wedding the Bidens toured western Canada. DeVoe, 12 Glen Oak court, Medford. The Cavitts recently returned to the United States from Athens, Greece, where Colonel Cavitt was stationed with the United States Army for two and a half years.
