and Southern Oregon college. He
is a graduate of the University
of Oregon Law School and re
cently completed graduate work
in law at Georgetown univer
sity, Washington, D.C. He served
for two years in the United
States Army and is a member
of the Phi Delta Phi law fra
ternity. He is presently associat
ed in law practice with his sister,
Miss Noreen Kelly.
Formal announcement of the
engagement was made last eve
ning at a family dinner at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. John P.
Cooney, 301 Valley View drive,
honoring the birthday of Mrs.
McCabe. Parents and relatives
of the engaged couple attended.
The wedding date has been set
for October 5 at Sacred Heart
Catholic church.

fraternity and served two years
in the United States Army in
Aucsburg, Germany.
The couple plan to attend
Florida Southern college at
Lakeland, Fla., this fall.
The wedding is planned for
August 18 at St. Mark's Episco
pal church.

Visitors Leave
Valley After
Annual Visit
Major General and Mrs. Amos
A. Fries, who have been visit
ing in the valley, left Wednes
day for their home in Washing
ton. D.C.
Gen. and Mrs. Fries were
married in Medford and both
graduated from the Medford
High school class of 1893. After
graduating from West Point the
general served in the Army in
World War I. En route to Med
ford the couple visited in Los
Angeles and attended a Cham
ber of Commerce luncheon at
which Gen. Fries received a cita
tion for engineering work there
some years ago.
The evening of July 7 a fam
ily dinner for the Fries was held
in the Medford hotel. Attending
were Mrs. Etta Purkeypile, sis
ter of the general, and several
nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Fred Slagle entertained
the visitors at her home, 103
South Holly street, Monday eve
ning, July 8. Guests included
c'.assmates.
Gen. and Mrs. Fries planned
to pass through Portland where
they will be guests of the gen
eral's brother, Archie Fries.

Miss Harris is the bride-elect

at three o'clock this afternoon at

Residents
Return After
Bermuda Trip
Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Bender and
daughter, Gail, returned home
early this week after vacationing
in the eastern United States and
Bermuda. The Benders' home
is at 1941 Westerlund drive.
Mr. and Mrs. Bender were in
Seattle June 7 for the gradua
tion of their daughter from the
Helen Bush school there. They
planned the trip East as a grad
uation present.
The family flew to New York
where they met Miss Ann Gar
ner, Medford, who had flown
tHere from this city. She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter
Garner, 2009 East Main street.
The four Medford people then
flew to the islands where they
stayed at the Eldow Surf club.
While there they were joined by
Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Bender Jr.,
son and daughter-in-law of the
Benders, from Seattle, Wash.
The Medford residents stayed
at Bermuda until June 20, then
left by plane for New York. Miss
Garner continued home, arriv-
ing the next day. The Benders
stayed in the East, returning
home this week. j
Miss Garner graduated from I
Medford Senior High -school this !
spring and plans to enter Wil- j
lamette university in the fall to !
major in pre-nursing.
Miss Bender will enter the
University of Washington in Se
attle and plans to major in dental
hygiene.

Return Home Tuesday
Mrs. Sherman Cavitt and
three sons of Buena Park, Calif.,
are visiting Mrs. Cavitt's par

The Cavitts recently returned
to the United States from
Athens, Greece, where Colonel
Cavitt was stationed with the
United States Army for two and
