The beaten pathway crunches un derfoot. It is like a starli;hted walk on a rocky back pasture in Michigan or Oklahoma. But the longitude is 4 .0 0 0 miles to the east. This is a night patrol with the French Army !Algeria. ny clump of bushes could be the nesting place for a rebel ambush. The Frenrh soldiers are the 22nd Regiment of Colonial In fantry, drawn from France's overseas possessions. They are headquartered at Marnia, seven miles inside the Moroccan bord er. TlP commanding officers of th second battalion is Major Henri Robert, son and grandson of a soldier, graduate of St. Cyr (the French Wet Point) in 1938. Like most French career officers, he has ben fighting ever since. Continuously At War France is the only country in the world to have been at war c o n t inuously since 1939 the second worldwar, then Indo china, still North Africa. His battalion covers 70 square miles along the frontier. Its 900 Negroes from French West Africa, 300 French draftees and 200 Vietnamese commandos are spread thinner than the book recommends. But the Algerian campaign does not fit the book to begin with. Algeria is about the size of France. Sun Hat Set The sun has just set when the patroi sets out single file at five-yard intervals. Night falls swiftly and the stars come out. There is no moon. Ninety minutes pass and Carillo whispers, "That's the barbed vire 300 yeards ahead" the Moroccan frontier. There is a rustle in the bushes. Carillo wheels. A rabbit scamp ers across the roadway. Night after night these patrols go out. Sometimes, as tonight, it is only rabbits. Sometimes it is rebels. The rebels say they will fight until the French leave. The captain back at Hill 437 does not sound like a man about to leave. "Have a beer," he says. Five Area Students Named OSC Leaders Corvallis Five Oregon State College students from the Med ford area have been appointed to serve as leaders for "New Student Week" this fall. They are Charles E- Caster, Frank D. McCully Jr.. and Mari anne I. Moore of Medford, and Carol A. Dobrot and Donn R. Johnson of Central Point. "New Student Week" is held each fall before classes open to give new students an orienta tion on fields of study and camp us activities. Student leaders from the previous year on campus serve as counselors and guides during the week's pro gram. New Student week is sched uled Sept. 22 to 28 this year. Classes begin Sept. 30. The Communist Party is not in the habit of taking petty revenge.'' Drilling and equipping an oil well at sea means spending eight or nine times as much as for a well on dry land.
