(International Soundphoto) Mysterious Object Alarming New England Said Weather Balloon Boston w A high flying object which soared over New England Wednesday, alarming hundreds of residents and caus ing the Air Force to send up a jet fighter plane, was identified as a weather balloon today. Offcials at the Air Force Cam bridge Research Center at Hans com Field in Lawrence said it was nothing more than "Moby Dick," a high altitude balloon used to record weather data in the upper stratosphere. A spokesman said the balloon was launched in Vernalis, Calif., by the Air Force and could be deflated from the ground by "merely pushing a button." Information recorded by the balloon's instruments are auto matically sent to California by radio, according to the official. Robert Duncan, Medford, declared yes terday in a luncheon talk to the Medford Kiwanis club. "You have a responsibility to express yourself," he said, stat ing also that taking interest in - sessions of the legislature is a "duty." Speaking to the service club members at Rogue Valley Coun try club, Duncan mentioned the pressure on a legislator from constituents and the problem of determining what a lawmaker's obligation is to his constituents, the state or the county. He in dicated that the opinion that a legislator should do the best job he can for the largest number of people. Can't Ba Lone Wolf In fulfilling the obligation, Duncan brought out, "It is hard to vote against people who are your friends. He pointed out that a legislator cannot go straight along on a lone wolf program because tlre are times when he needs help, himself, with cer tain legislation. Duncan spoke of the bill pro posing the abolition of the death penalty for crime as prob ably the legislature's most im portant measure going on the ballot. Police and newspaper switch boards from New Haven, Conn. to Brunswick, Maine, were also deluged by phone calls with resi dents reporting such unlikely things as "flying saucers," "a Russian device" and "an earth satellite which got away." Many callers claimed the bal-' loon changed colors in flight, ranging from a bright red to silver-blue. Scientists explained 1 that this phenomenon was caused by the reflection of the setting sun's rays on the plastic balloon covering. High Flyer Scientists said the device was drifting at a height of about 100,000 feet. Weather instru ments are contained in a pack age which hangs beneath the balloon and directions for for- warding the contents are writ ten on the box in English, French and Spanish. Persons finding a downed balloon can collect a S25 reward by returning the contents of the j box to the Air Force, officials said. One "Moby Dick"' came to earth in Spain, according to a spokesman. He said most of the balloons were never glimpsed by the nation's residents since their high altitude usually kept them far above clouds and haze in the sky. Over New England Wednesday night the skies were unusually clear. The research center said the balloons were launched quite frequently. 'Oriental Flu' Vaccine Ordered Washington (IT The govern ment told drug manufacturers j today to proceed with mass pro- ; duction of a vaccine effective in j warding off the highly contagi ous "Oriental flu," now spread ing throughout the world. Working closely together, gov ernment and ir.dustry scientists developed the vaccine in a 1 "crash program" to make it available by the start of the flu season this fall. The Public Health Service an nounced Wednesday the vaccine has been tested successfully on human volunteers injected with the Oriental virus. The service has sent specifica tions for the vaccine to six manufacturers and expects them to begin turning out batches of shots soon. A spokesman for the service said the vaccine, like others used in combatting influenza, is not 100 per cent effective. But it was successful enough to start production immediately.
