TWO MEDF019 (OHEGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday July 11. 1957 Oil Th Side By E. V. Durling (Diitributcd by King Featuru Sradicjte, Inc.) "Always ihe best man. Never the groom." So observes a Brooklyn bachelor who hag been the best man at 12 wed dings. That's quite a record. However, a British bachelor named Joseph Handisides, who is 59 years old, has been the best man at 19 weddings. Being a best man is a nervewracking assignment. At a recent cere mony in New York the bride groom was cool, calm and col lected. The bride was likewise. But the best man, poor fellow, cracked under the strain. He fainted at the altar. Asking Queries from clients. Q. A Jockey, according to the rules of racing, cannot own and race a thoroughbred at recognized tracks. How about a jockey's wife? A. No rule against a jock ey's wife owning a racing stable. However, in states such as Cal ifornia, where the community property law is in force, such ownership might be questioned. Q. Has there ever been a stage version of "Around The World In Eighty Days" produced. A. In 1870 the Kiralfy Brothers pro duced a highly successful and clever stage version of the Verne classic. In 1946 another stage version was produced. It was a flop. Passing By Sammy Cahn. Veteran song writer. Scored his first hit with a new version of the old Hebrew melody "B-i Mir Bist Du Schoen." Remember it? Was on the Hit Parade of 1938. Was popularized by the Andrews Sisters. Asides Did you ever play in a Mar ried Men vs. Single Men base ball game at a picnic or club outing? If not, cease calling yourself a Young Old Timer. You probably never even com peted in a three-legged race . . . That organization known as "The Camp Fire Girls" now has 480,000 members. I wonder if any woman who had been a Camp Fire Girl married a man who had been a Boy Scout. And, if so, how did the marriage make out? Cuxious Food Recently I mentioned a Man hattan food shop that offers such quaint food items as canned fried bees and fried grasshop pers. In Detroit there is a res taurant called "Safari Land" that lists on its menu: "Steamed Caterpillars Served With Hot Butter." Also "Fresh Baby Bees With Drawn Butter Sauce." Also available at this eatery are such curious items as "Rattle snake Cocktail," "African Lion Tail Soup" .and "Buffalo bergers." Sidelights Ever hear of an Irishman named Barnaby Cohen? If not, keep the name in mind. It may come up on a quiz program Barnaby, a native of Dublin, in vented and waj the first manu facturer of the lead pencil A three-year-old lad of Dear born, Mich., has five living great grandparents and four living grandparents. "Is it a rec ord?" asks my informant. Seems like one to me, but I won't bet any stogies on it until Texas Brooklyn and California are heard from. Airline Skippers Some British airline captains burdened with the responsibility of navigating huge passenger planes over difficult interna tional rules are paid a salary that is the equivalent of $125 a week. Certainly a pathetically small pittance for such a dan gerous job. Dutch airline pilots are paid the equivalent of S177 a week. So are French airline skippers. Name the Same Now I have a reader in Mem phis, Mich. I appreciate her in terest. However, I am opposed to the name of her town. I be lieve the name Memphis should be exclusively used by that mu nicipality in Tennessee. I feel the same about all smaller towns having the names of larger places. Let the largest city keep the name. Have the others vote for a new name. This goes for Newark, N.J. and Newark, Del. Pasadena, Calif., and Pasadena Md., Albany, N.Y. and Albany Ga. And so on. And don't forget those 17 places in this country named Brooklyn. Sixteen of these towns should change their names leaving only Brooklyn N.Y., the original Brooklyn, and me largest place of that name. Among the Married Great Britain has a higher percentage of bigamists than any other nation in the world. Re cently uncovered there was a re markable bigamist. That is, re markable for the manner in which he for so long handled a highly complicated domestic situation. This man had three wives and ' three homes. Each wife thought she was the only one. The bigamist discussed is the father of 12 children, nine by one wife, twins by another wife and one by his third wife. Yet, as stated, each of three wives and families was ignorant of the existence of the others. This went on for years until the head of three families finally made a false step that uncovered the strange situation. i t: iS ' I 'GRUESOME CRIME Puerto Rican handyman Juan Rivera Aponte (right), 45, and Police Capt. John Bar suglia look at a portion of confession Vineland, N. J., police say Aponte made in admitting slaying of a teen age boy last October. Police reported that Aponte ad mitted strangulation slaying of Roger Carletto, 13, to obtain top of boy's skull to make a love potion. Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent BY EVA GABOR Written for the United Press Hollywood HP) As proud as I am to be a Gabor, I'll have to admit there are times when it would be easier if I had another prefessional name. I love being interviewed, but it seems that since I am a Gabor, interviewers are primarily in terested in my opinions of men, women, love and goulash. When I tell them that Mama's the only person ever to have given me a fur coat, or that act ing is the main interest in my life, they smile patronizingly. The truth is, glamour, dia monds m i n ks, men, sex and sophistication get more credit than deserved for the part they play in my life. "I'm an actress first. Every thing else is incidental, co-incidental, relatively u n i mportant and greatly exaggerated! Name Causes Trouble But, alas, my name is always being unduly coupled with stories of caviar, champagne and continental drawing rooms. Diamonds? I do have a few. About $150,000 worth, but they're investments. I bought them myself. Men know pract ically nothing about buying jewelry. All my life I've had to beat glamour down. Less publicized aspects of me are the ones about which I'd rather be asked. When I came to Hollywood I was 17. I had never acted. I had never studied. I acted and I've never stopped acting. I studied and I have never stopped study ing. So why is it after a perform ance someone inevitably comes to me and says, "Why, you can act.!" Studio Life Unnoticed Not many people ask about my former membership in the Actors' Studio, about my first Broadway show, "The Happy Time," my own television show. Or the fact that I was a disc jockey in a midnight radio show in New York and once authored a book. Someday I'd like to play Shaw. For my next stage appearance I have in mind an adaptation of a Viennese version of 'Camille." The only thing I haven't done theater-wise is dance. That I'm about to learn. Don't get me wrong. I don't sell glamour short. It's flatter ing to be called glamorous. Every woman likes that. But I'll be most proud when someone points Barn owls are valuable rat catchers but are seldom seen be cause they carry on their ac tivities at night. to me as an actress who happens to be named Gabor not as a Gabor who happens to be an actress.
