Dulles Asks Speed In Judge's Decision In Trial for Girard Washington Wi The federal judge deciding whether GI Wil liam S. Girard should be brought home immediately from Japan considered the case today under the spur of a plea for speed from Secretary of State John Foster Dulles. Federal Judge Joseph C. Mc- Garraghy was expected to hand down a decision sometime this week. Dulles said in a disposition be fore the court released Monday that a speedy decision was need ed to avoid "great embarrass ment" to the United States. Risk of Injury He said "every hour" in which the issue of whether Japan or a U.S. military court martial should try Girard for killing a Japanese woman was not set tled was a source of internation al friction. He also said there is possible "risk of injury to United States personnel located in Japan." Administration officials said Dulles wanted a quick decision so tne case can reach the bu- preme Court before it recesses for the summer. Next Monday will be the last meeting of the current term unless the justices otherwise order. Girard's attorneys in New York attacked Dulles. They said he took an unprecedented, "bra zen" step and accused him of trying to have his political ac tions "rubber stemped" by the courts. International Furor Girard is accused of killing a Japanese woman while guard- ling a military firing range near I Tokyo. The case has created an international furor. In Japan, two witnesses to the 'incident said today Girard had : ordered Japanese scrap pickers off the firing range before he .fired the shot alleged to have killed Mrs. Naka Sakai. 1 It also was reported by the 'witnesses that Girard was walk ing or running toward Mrs. j Sakai when he fired the shot 'which killed her with his rifle I near his hip. The witnesses said he could ! not have aimed accurately while I moving over the rough terrain. Knight Definitely Not Interested in Senate Candidacy Sacramento, Calif. W Gov. Goodwin J. Knight of California said Monday that he hasn't "the slightest interest in accepting or seeking a candidacy for the United States Senate" in the 1958 election. The Republican governor was in Los Angeles, but his office here issued a formal statement "commenting on reports in cir culation in Washington for sev eral weeks that he (Knight) might be induced to seek the post which Sen. William F. Knowland will relinquish next year." Knight said no approaches had been made to him about re placing Knowland "and when ever the matter is discussed in my presence, I have tried to make both plain and definite that the position has no attrac tions for me." Governor Candidacy Seen "I will not be a candidate for the Senate regardless of any course I may follow in the fu ture," he said. Knowland several weeks ago j announced his decision to re tire at the end of his term, which expires in Jan. 1959. Many political columnists have predicted he plans to run for governor of California next year as a stepping stone toward a try for the GOP presidential nomi nation in 1960. Knowland has made no for mal announcement of such plans, however, saying only that he intends to confer with Re publican leaders in the state be fore he decides what he will do in the future. While Knight has made no formal announcement of his can didacy, he is expected to run for re-election next year for a new four-year term. Television May Aid Training of Pilots Binghampton, N. Y. W Television may give a new di mension to jet "flight" in a simu lator on the ground. The new wrinkle consists of the addition of a closed-circuit television to provide a life-like view of an airport on landing or takeoff as part of pilot training. Link Aviation Corp., builders of the famous Link trainer, is reported considering the use of the TV idea. It would consist of projecting on a screen in front of a simulator cockpit, a picture which reflects changes of per spective, altitude and motion caused by whatever action the training pilot takes with the sim ulator controls. Tuesday, June 18, 19S7 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVS Dreaded Parasitic Plant Discovered Raleigh, N. C. (to Striga, a dread parasitic plant akin to African "witchweed," has been found on 76 farms in four south eastern North Carolina counties since July, 1956. The parasite attacks the roots of corn, but plant pathologists said it also has been found de stroying "pest" grasses such as Johnson grass and sandbur. Plant pathologists studying the problem of striga said chemicals offer some hope of controlling the parasitic plant which hereto fore was unknown in the West ern Hemisphere. Mayor Touches Off Spirited Milkshake Nottingham, England ilP The mayor cf Nottingham touched off what may have been the world's most spirited "milk shake" at a local dairy festival Monday. The mayor pushed a button which started automatic milk ing machines and also set a herd of cows kicking, bellow ing, jumping and mocing. An official said the Jerseys bounced because a short cir cuit in the wiring of the milk machines qava each bovine a jolting series of electric shocks. Tax Write-off Seen Possible Boomerang Spokane (W Sen. Henry M. Jackson (D-Wash.) said Moa day that if a high Hells Canyoa dam bill were passed in the Sea ate it would be because of the selfishness of the Idaho Powar Co. in getting a fast tax write-ca4 on its Snake river projeet. The senator said that Feb. g marked the 20th anniversary of the Hells Canyon issue and so far the proponents of tha high dam have lost most of the fight. He said, however, the tax write off may be a boomerang aiding in passage of the high dam bill when it comes to the Sena. GirUt, Elderly Man Die in House Fire Monroe, Wash. OP) An 11-year-old girl and an elderly neighbor died Monday when fire destroyed a farm house near Sultan. Snohomish County Coroner Ken Baker identifed the victims as Bonnie Stanfield, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Stanfield, and Frank D. Owens, 7. The girl was in bed with the measles. Baker said, when the fire started. Her mother discov ered the blaze but was unable to get to the youngster. Owens saw the fire and ran across the road and into the house. A few minutes later he staggered out and collapsed. Baker said the girl died of burns and Owens either died of smoke poisoning pr a heart ailment. Scientists To Seek 'Monster' in Loch London (IP) An expedition plans to survey with the latest electronic devices the depths of Scotland's Loch Ness to deter mine whether the "sea monster" is real or a myth. The plans for a full scientific expedition to the Loch, where "eyewitnesses" have reported sighting a serpent-like "mon ster" over the years, were an nounced here Monday. The "monster" purportedly has been photographed, sketch ed, and written about. It has at tracted countless tourists to the Loch in the heart of Scotland. John Gorst, an official of a i company which specializes in television, radio and electronic equipment, announced an expe dition will go to the Loch in mid-August to "find out wheth er there really is a monster." The Loch, he said, would be sounded and surveyed "from end to end and from top to bottom." GONE TO SEED Eaton Rapids. Mich. W The New York Central Railroad passenger station here has gone to seed. The 84-year-old station has been sold to a firm for con version into a clover seed pro cessing plant. They united the voice of the nation. The day was June 17, 191443 years ago yesterday. Early American Boat Recovered From Lake Albany. X.Y. t? The gun boat Philadelphia, one of the oricinal ships of the 1TT6 Ameri can fleet, has been recovered from the bottom of Lake Cham plain. The gunboat was one of the embryo American Navy which delayed the British advance southward and enabled the Colo nials to prepare defenses for the campaign of 1777 which ended at Saratoga in victory for the native forces.
