Among The Married
Polyandry is practiced in Ti

as many as five husbands. The
husbands do all the housework.

The distinguished drama critic.
Percy Hammond, once stated
that in his over 40 years as a
pinygoer the best performance
he had seen was Henry Hull as
Jeeter Lester in "Tobacco Road."
I think the best legitimate stage
performance I have seen was
that of Jeanne Eagles as Sadie
Thompson in "Rain."

Solomon Goldberg. He invented
the crinkled hairpin. Before that

crinkled hairpin cured that dis

CHOOSES RUSSIA OVER CHILDREN Wearing a ba

weeps (left) as a newsman asks her about the four young
sons she and her husband, George, 54, abandoned to
Chicago charity so they could return to their native Rus
sia. Later, she gave an emphatic "No!" when asked if
she would rather stay in the U.S. with the youngsters.
At right she continues on her way after the tearful inter
lude that followed her arrival in New York by train from
Chicago. The Kozmins plan to fly home to Russia, from
which they came to the U.S. as displaced persons in 1950.
Dulles Asks Speed
In Judge's Decision
In Trial for Girard
Washington Wi The federal
judge deciding whether GI Wil
liam S. Girard should be brought
home immediately from Japan
considered the case today under
the spur of a plea for speed from
Secretary of State John Foster
Dulles.
Federal Judge Joseph C. Mc-
Garraghy was expected to hand
down a decision sometime this
week.
Dulles said in a disposition be
fore the court released Monday
that a speedy decision was need
ed to avoid "great embarrass
ment" to the United States.
Risk of Injury
He said "every hour" in which
the issue of whether Japan or a
U.S. military court martial
should try Girard for killing a
Japanese woman was not set
tled was a source of internation
al friction. He also said there is
possible "risk of injury to
United States personnel located
in Japan."
Administration officials said
Dulles wanted a quick decision
so tne case can reach the bu-
preme Court before it recesses
for the summer. Next Monday
will be the last meeting of the
current term unless the justices
otherwise order.
Girard's attorneys in New
York attacked Dulles. They said
he took an unprecedented, "bra
zen" step and accused him of
trying to have his political ac
tions "rubber stemped" by the
courts.
International Furor
Girard is accused of killing a
Japanese woman while guard-
ling a military firing range near
I Tokyo. The case has created an
international furor.
In Japan, two witnesses to the
'incident said today Girard had
: ordered Japanese scrap pickers
off the firing range before he
.fired the shot alleged to have
killed Mrs. Naka Sakai.
1 It also was reported by the
'witnesses that Girard was walk
ing or running toward Mrs.
j Sakai when he fired the shot
'which killed her with his rifle
I near his hip.
The witnesses said he could
! not have aimed accurately while
I moving over the rough terrain.
Knight Definitely
Not Interested in
Senate Candidacy
Sacramento, Calif. W Gov.
Goodwin J. Knight of California
said Monday that he hasn't "the
slightest interest in accepting or
seeking a candidacy for the
United States Senate" in the
1958 election.
The Republican governor was
in Los Angeles, but his office
here issued a formal statement
"commenting on reports in cir
culation in Washington for sev
eral weeks that he (Knight)
might be induced to seek the
post which Sen. William F.
Knowland will relinquish next
year."
Knight said no approaches
had been made to him about re
placing Knowland "and when
ever the matter is discussed in
my presence, I have tried to
make both plain and definite
that the position has no attrac
tions for me."
Governor Candidacy Seen
"I will not be a candidate for
the Senate regardless of any
course I may follow in the fu
ture," he said.
Knowland several weeks ago j
announced his decision to re
tire at the end of his term,
which expires in Jan. 1959.
Many political columnists have
predicted he plans to run for
governor of California next year
as a stepping stone toward a try
for the GOP presidential nomi
nation in 1960.
Knowland has made no for
mal announcement of such
plans, however, saying only that
he intends to confer with Re
publican leaders in the state be
fore he decides what he will do
in the future.
While Knight has made no
formal announcement of his can
didacy, he is expected to run
for re-election next year for a
new four-year term.
Television May Aid
Training of Pilots
Binghampton, N. Y. W
Television may give a new di
mension to jet "flight" in a simu
lator on the ground.
The new wrinkle consists of
the addition of a closed-circuit
television to provide a life-like
view of an airport on landing or
takeoff as part of pilot training.
Link Aviation Corp., builders
of the famous Link trainer, is
reported considering the use of
the TV idea. It would consist of
projecting on a screen in front of
a simulator cockpit, a picture
which reflects changes of per
spective, altitude and motion
caused by whatever action the
training pilot takes with the sim
ulator controls.

Tax Write-off Seen
Possible Boomerang
Spokane (W Sen. Henry
M. Jackson (D-Wash.) said Moa
day that if a high Hells Canyoa
dam bill were passed in the Sea
ate it would be because of the
selfishness of the Idaho Powar
Co. in getting a fast tax write-ca4
on its Snake river projeet.
The senator said that Feb. g
marked the 20th anniversary of
the Hells Canyon issue and so
far the proponents of tha high
dam have lost most of the fight.
He said, however, the tax write
off may be a boomerang aiding
in passage of the high dam bill
when it comes to the Sena.

Scientists To Seek
'Monster' in Loch
London (IP) An expedition
plans to survey with the latest
electronic devices the depths of
Scotland's Loch Ness to deter
mine whether the "sea monster"
is real or a myth.
The plans for a full scientific
expedition to the Loch, where
"eyewitnesses" have reported
sighting a serpent-like "mon
ster" over the years, were an
nounced here Monday.
The "monster" purportedly
has been photographed, sketch
ed, and written about. It has at
tracted countless tourists to the
Loch in the heart of Scotland.
John Gorst, an official of a
i company which specializes in
television, radio and electronic
equipment, announced an expe
dition will go to the Loch in
mid-August to "find out wheth
er there really is a monster."
The Loch, he said, would be

GONE TO SEED
Eaton Rapids. Mich. W
The New York Central Railroad
passenger station here has gone
to seed. The 84-year-old station
has been sold to a firm for con
version into a clover seed pro
cessing plant.
They united the voice of the nation. The day was June 17, 191443
years ago yesterday. Near the Nevada-Utah border, telephone men joined pairs of
small wires. For the first time, telephone lines stretched coast to coast. A few
months later transcontinental service began, at a cost of about $20 a call. From this
beginning, phone service East has progressed with giant strides. Today you can call
across the country in seconds for only a small fraction of what it cost you then.
It's a story of continuing improvements over the years. Equipment that enables a
single line to carry several calls at once. Better amplifiers to strengthen your voice.
Coaxial cables and radio relay systems to carry your calls to name a few. And
tomorrow? Exciting new developments are in store to make your Long Distance
calling even more enjoyable.
