SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Newbry Approaching End of Nine Years as Secretary of State Salem (UP) Secretary of State Earl T. Newbry is keeping his fingers crossed these days as he approaches the end of his un precedented nine years in office. Five of his predecessors met v.ith violent deaths. Oregon's first secretary of state. George W. Legretton, was killed by the Indians in 1844. The next two secretaries Dr. John E. Long and Frederic Prigg were drowned in the Clacka mas river near Oregon City, which was then the site of the provisional government, killed in a private plane crash And Robert S. Farrell Jr. was which also took the lives of Gov. Earl Snell, himself a former sec retary of state. Senate Presi dent Marshall Cornett and the pilot. Retiring From Office Newbry is retiring from his of fice and service on Oregon's Board of Control when his term expires by constitutional limita tion Jan. 7. Newbry plans to continue with his son. Lynn, operating the New- bnr Orchards at Ashland. He also has business ventures in Portland and Salem. He was appointed by Gov. John Hall to succeed Farrell in October, 1947, and served also under Govs. McKay, Paul Pat terson and Elmo Smith. Reviewing his nine years in of fice Newbry noted it was during this period that he inaugurated the "staggered" motor vehicle and driver license registrations to eliminate rush periods in January and July. Newbry feels the change has been uniformly accepted by the public and has resulted in sav ings to the state. Use of tabs on standard license plates effected further savings. Newbry received all national honors his office affords. He was president of the American As sociation of Motor Vehicle Ad ministrators in 1950 and presi dent of the National Association Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 9:30 A.M. Man Indicted by Jury Surrenders to Police Portland iU.R) Clifford O. Bennett, 34, indicted by the Multnomah county grand jury on three misdemeanor counts, surrendered to police here Sun day night and said he had been asked last summer by a Portland underworld character to give perjured testimony. Bennett was indicted on charges of disturbing the public peace, offending public decency, and injuring the public morals. He posted $1500 bail. Bennett said he had been sub poenaed to testify last summer but was excused "until further notice." He said an underworld figure appeared at his hotel the next day and asked him to tes tify he had given a bribe to a certain law officer. He said he refused. Avalanche Fatal to Seven in Japan Fujiu, Japan (U.R) Seven persons were killed near here Monday in a New Year's Eve tragedy when an avalanche hur tled two trucks nearly 200 feet into a valley. Of the 18 persons buried un der debris and snow, 11 mirac ulously survived although they were seriously injured. The seven persons killed were either dug out dead or died soon after they were rescued. The two trucks were part of a convoy of five transport trucks of the Japan Express company. They were moving along a high way near this western Japan city with a snowplow bulldozer at their head when the avalanche roared down and hurtled the two trucks into the valley. Portland Police Chief Submits Resignation Portland (U.R) Portland Police Chief Jim Purcell Jr., handed in his resignation to Mayor Fred L. Peterson yester day, the mayor's final day in office. Terry D. Schrunk, former Multnomah county sheriff, took over the duties as mayor of the city, effective at midnight. Schrunk had earlier said one of his first acts after assuming office would be to relieve Pur cell of his duties as police chief. Pleasani Weather Opens New Year; Cold in Midwest Br UNITED PRESS The new year opened with relatively pleasant weather across the nation today. Holiday cheer was chilled, however, by a mass of frosty air that swooned into the north central section of the country. The chilly air thrust its nose into the middle Mississippi Val ley aid the Ohio Valley. Mer cury readings dropped as much as 30 degrees over a 24-hour per iod in Minnesota, Wisconsin and parts of North Dakota. Interna tional Falls, Minn., was probably the coldest spot in the nation early today with a reading of 16 below zero. 15 Inches of Sr.ow A snowstorm that clotted roads in the northeast was pre dicted to swirl away after dump ing what was predicted to mount up to 15 inches of snow in the western New York state area. Some weather itations reported an additional inch of snow dur ing the six hour period ending around midnight. Except for a few flurries in North Dakota, the only other precipitation today was in the far Northwest, where light rain sprinkled over the Pa cific coastal regions. The frigid air was predicted to spread over the central plains and Ohio Valley today, overlap ping into parts of the middle and north Atlantic states. Flurries were expected to be restricted to the Great Lakes shores and northern New England. The rest of the country had fair weather today, with the exception of the Northwest, where rains contin ued to fall. Pope Pius Xll Greets New Year Early Today Vatican City (U.R) Pope Pius XII greeted 1957 shortly after the stroke of midnight to day kneeling before a bare and dimly-lit altar in his private chapel adjoining the papal apart ment in the Apostolic palace. The 80-year-old Pontiff greet ed the new year praying for world peace and for Catholics still suffering persecution in the Communist-dominated countries. The exact time was known be cause doctors were standing by with stop-watches to determine which would be Rochester's and maybe the nation's first baby of 1957. The girls are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. John Steely of 208 Elm street. East Rochester, and Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Hetrick of 6009 East Henrietta Road of Suburban Rush, New York. Another girl was born at one minute after midnight at another hospital to Mrs. Joseph Goodwin of 194 Emerston St., Rochester. MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE Three Wafer Systems Start in Minnesota St. Paul, Minn (U.R) Min nesota, which has more water within its borders than any state in the nation, is the source of three of the continent's great water systems. Geographers say there is one square mile of water for every 20 square miles of land in the state, not including Lake Super ior. There are more than 4,000 square miles of water within the state. U.R) The Wisconsin Motor Vehicle De partment says public high schools in this state offer far more driver education courses than the average for the nation as a whole. Department statistics point out that 86 per cent of state high schools offered courses I which were taken by 28,594 stu dents in the 19dd-19o6 school year.
