SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE
Newbry Approaching
End of Nine Years as
Secretary of State
Salem (UP) Secretary of
State Earl T. Newbry is keeping
his fingers crossed these days as
he approaches the end of his un
precedented nine years in office.
Five of his predecessors met
v.ith violent deaths. Oregon's
first secretary of state. George
W. Legretton, was killed by the
Indians in 1844.
The next two secretaries Dr.
John E. Long and Frederic Prigg
were drowned in the Clacka
mas river near Oregon City,
which was then the site of the
provisional government,
killed in a private plane crash
And Robert S. Farrell Jr. was
which also took the lives of Gov.
Earl Snell, himself a former sec
retary of state. Senate Presi
dent Marshall Cornett and the
pilot.
Retiring From Office
Newbry is retiring from his of
fice and service on Oregon's
Board of Control when his term
expires by constitutional limita
tion Jan. 7.
Newbry plans to continue with
his son. Lynn, operating the New-
bnr Orchards at Ashland. He
also has business ventures in
Portland and Salem.
He was appointed by Gov.
John Hall to succeed Farrell in
October, 1947, and served also
under Govs. McKay, Paul Pat
terson and Elmo Smith.
Reviewing his nine years in of
fice Newbry noted it was during
this period that he inaugurated
the "staggered" motor vehicle
and driver license registrations
to eliminate rush periods in
January and July.
Newbry feels the change has
been uniformly accepted by the
public and has resulted in sav
ings to the state. Use of tabs on
standard license plates effected
further savings.
Newbry received all national
honors his office affords. He was
president of the American As
sociation of Motor Vehicle Ad
ministrators in 1950 and presi
dent of the National Association

Pleasani Weather
Opens New Year;
Cold in Midwest
Br UNITED PRESS
The new year opened with
relatively pleasant weather
across the nation today. Holiday
cheer was chilled, however, by
a mass of frosty air that swooned
into the north central section of
the country.
The chilly air thrust its nose
into the middle Mississippi Val
ley aid the Ohio Valley. Mer
cury readings dropped as much
as 30 degrees over a 24-hour per
iod in Minnesota, Wisconsin and
parts of North Dakota. Interna
tional Falls, Minn., was probably
the coldest spot in the nation
early today with a reading of 16
below zero.
15 Inches of Sr.ow
A snowstorm that clotted
roads in the northeast was pre
dicted to swirl away after dump
ing what was predicted to mount
up to 15 inches of snow in the
western New York state area.
Some weather itations reported
an additional inch of snow dur
ing the six hour period ending
around midnight. Except for a
few flurries in North Dakota, the
only other precipitation today
was in the far Northwest, where
light rain sprinkled over the Pa
cific coastal regions.
The frigid air was predicted to
spread over the central plains
and Ohio Valley today, overlap
ping into parts of the middle and
north Atlantic states. Flurries
were expected to be restricted to
the Great Lakes shores and
northern New England. The rest
of the country had fair weather
today, with the exception of the
Northwest, where rains contin
ued to fall.

St. Paul, Minn (U.R) Min
nesota, which has more water
within its borders than any
state in the nation, is the source
of three of the continent's great
water systems.
Geographers say there is one
square mile of water for every
20 square miles of land in the
state, not including Lake Super
