Tuesday, January 1, 1957 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE On The Side (Distributed by King A hair-do can do much for' woman's appearance. What does !' the average haircut do for a j man? Not much. However, when j handled by specialists it can ' make the average man a better j looking fellow. The artistic hair-j cutter, whose price is very lime j more than that of the ordinary j V-nsorialist, studies a man's fea- j tures, the size of the ears, the j shape of the nose and the fore- I head are all considered. Also the" receding hair situation when such is present. Now that the : average barber is charging SI. 50 for a haircut, a man might as well spend 50 cents more and have his liair cut by a specialist. Fireplace What is home in winter with out a wood-burning fireplace? We have three at our house. What kind of wood do you got the best results from in your fireplace? Pine, oak and birch are the best. Elm is the worst. It is difficult to get elm to burn and when it does burn it smold ers. Wild Lot Discussing the many romantic episodes in the lives of his sons, Aly and Sadruddin, the Aga Khan recently said, "Those two boys of mine take their hearts too seriously. Wild love matches are an affliction to one's health, a derangement to one's mind and a scourge to one's pocket. And they put you in the hands of the lawyers." That Slogan Who originated the slogan "See America First?" This ques tion has been frequently dis cussed in this department. It is an argument I would like to get off our books. After doing con siderable research on it, I have come to the decision that origin ator of the aforementioned out standing example of effective brevity was Fisher Harris of the Salt Lake City Chamber of Com merce. Mr. Fisher originated and made use of this slogan over 50 years ago. In 1905 to be exact Asides How quickly can you make 10 five-letter words from the letters in constitution? United Press Correspondent New York (U.P.) This column is a personal glance back on TV, 1956. It is a list of hilhlights, but sifice it is a personal list, it is colored, of course, by personal biases. I have forsaken "catego ries," preferring instead to ramble through the months past, during which I watched TV some 25 to 30 hours each week. If I had to single out the one show that provided TV at its "purest" in 1956, the palm would have to go a prizefight the Floyd Patterson - Hurricane" Jackson bout carried by NBC-TV on June 8. Dramatic Action The 12-rounder was hardly a polished essay in the sweet sci ence. But it was TV stripped down to its cleanest. The arena of the event was limited, the ac tion continuous and dramatic, the whole geared perfectly to the single watcher in his room at home. It was the sort of thing TV does best a simple, sustained action happening "in the now." For excellence over the year, men's shop floor reg. 19.95 famous CAR COATS Famous make. Poplin, milium lined. Caesar's skits sometimes run. to tiresome length and so do "bits" within the skits, but there is always a sense of real anticipation about a Caesar show each one has flavor, wit, originalty. Again in the comedy line, a vote for Ernie Kovacs. His three second spoof of "the cooty girl" commercial was inspired wacki ness. So was his "Nairobi trio." A vote, too, for the "home movies" of Herb Shriner, all of which struck a winning note in an otherwise pedestrian series. Special Nod To CBS The best TV drama of the year was, I believe, a little-noticed number on "Kraft Theatre" early in the year called "The Sears Girls," a brittle disection of an old Boston family and the daughters who try to break away from it. It was written by Victor Wolfson. The female performance I en joyed most was Mildred Nat wick's in "Blithe Spirit." The male honors, in this corner, would go to John Drainie for "Mr. Arcularis," a "Studio One" drama full of cloud-and-shadow accessories main tloor reg. 2.98 to 8.50 HANDBAGS y2 Velvets, wools, leathers all size, shapes and colors. reg. 1.00 to 10.98 JEWELRY N e c k I aces, ear rings, bracelets, tailored and dressy designs. y2 WOOL STOLES Scarfs and shrugs. A special nod would have to go to the whole Sunday morning CBS-TV line-up of "Lamp Unto My Feet," "Look Up and Live" and "Camera Three." All three laid a fair share of bombs, but at their best they brought an off beat, sensitive approach to TV. CIVIL WAR FIND Cairo, 111.
