Newspaper Page TextIs Vic Milnes Attending Eugene Conference Vic Milnes, president of For tune Stations, Inc., and secretary of the Oregon Gasoline Dealers association, will leave Thursday for Eugene and Salem to attend meetings on the "gas war" situ ation. A conference of Oregon's key gasoline dealers has been called for Thursday noon in Salem. They will discuss the "gas war," reported existing in Eugene and threatening to develop in other parts of the state, and will in vestigate possibilities of elim inating "gas wars" in Oregon. Prior to the Salem meeting, Milnes will attend a breakfast session o f gasoline dealers Thursday morning in Eugene. A proposed ctfy ordinance to out law large poster type gasoline price signs will be considered. Portland now has such an ordi nance and similar legislation is being considered in several other cities in Oregon. 51st Year Medford LAIT United Ph -J-ull Leaded Wire Price 10c Tribune United Press Full Leased Wire Second Section MEDFORD, OREGON, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1956 Pages 1-10 SOC Faculty Member Plans New York Trip Ashland Miss Irene Hollcn beck. vice president of the Na tional Association of Biology Teachers, and assistant profes sor of science at Southern Ore gon college, will preside during the group's annual conference, Dec. 26-30, in New York City duting the general sessions. During the Saturday morning session. Miss Hollcnbeck will be chairman of a panel, "Interest getting Devices," which will fea ture a number of speakers and demonstrations. Cancer Society Here Active During Year (Editor's note: This is an other in a series of articles concerning agencies which are served by contributions to the United Medford Crusade). The Jackson county commit tee of the American Cencer So ciety is active throughout the year in work to combat the disease. Part of the work is education al in nature, but in addition there are other tasks, such as making bandages. Funds for this work come from the United MedfJrd Crusade. Medical Research Donations to the UMC which are turned over to the cancer society are largely for medical research and for educational purposes regarding the nation's number two killing disease. In addition, during the past several years many Jackson county resi dents suffering from cancer have received financial help and medi cal guidance through the work made possible through the Unit ed Medford Crusade. Cancer Is slowly being con quered, but the program is be ing measured in the lives of chil dren and of the millions of others stricken by the disease. Research is the slow, methodi cal testing of theories, the grad ual combination of information, the experimental use of new drugs, new methods of surgery, and new applications of radia tion techniques. Deaths Resulted Last year 80,000 deaths re sulted from cancer. Today can cer frequently can be cured by arly detection and prompt treat ment Tha American Cencer Society hat urged all dults to have an annual checkup, and women over 35 the semi-annual "Pap" smear test. This procedure has already helped cut the uterine cancer death rate by one third It could be cut by at least an other third, if all women over 33 had the twice-a-ycar test, the society said. Cancer affects two out of three families, the society said. TV Station to Start Educational Programs An experiment in educational television will start in southern Oregon Sunday, Oct. 14. at 11 p.m., when the first in a 13 week series of programs will be telecast by station KBES-TV. The first program opens a .series for adults entitled "Spot light on Opera." It will feature Dr. Jan Popper, professor ofl music at the University of Calif ornia and lecturer in symphony and opera. The six weekly programs will be followed by seven entitled "The Painting," during which the audience will observe an artist, Siegfried Rcinhardt, in structor of art at Washington university, as he creates a paint ing. "The Finder," for children 9 to 12 years old. will be seen at 5:30 p.m., beginning Saturday, Oct. 20. The program follows Sunny Fox, a curious imagina tive announcer, as he discovers new things of interest through books, films and studio inter views throughout the world. The show was produced by the educa tion television station in St. Louis. KETC. Oct. 12, as the leadoff event for the conference of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development for Southern Ore gon. Dr. Elmo N. Stevenson, president, has an nounced. Known as the faculty council, the group will cooperate with the administrative officers in the study and solution of prob lems of the institution; offer counsel and support to the ad ministrative officers in determ ining and implementing policy; and represent the faculty in mat ters concerning professional wel fare. Council members will serve staggered terms of three years. Dr. Stevenson said, with ap proximately one-third retiring each year. No more than two may be elected from each of the humanities, social science, edu cation, and science-mathematics divisions. Council members are Mrs. Betty Lou Dunlop, Dr. Eugene Bowman, Dr. Marshall Woodell, Dr. Arthur Krelsman, Dr. Alvln Fellers. Dr. Roy McNeal, and Dr. Bill Sampson.
