EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wedneiday. October 10. 1956 rf fir REVEAL WEDDING PLANS Comedian Jimmy Durante, 63, and 35-year-old actress Margie Little disclosed at the opening of the Paradise Valley Racquet Club in Phoenix, Ariz., that they plan to be married "sometime next year." "Jimmy won't set the date exactly," Miss Little said, "but it will be sometime next year." Kefauver Charges Ike's Advisors Took Check From Oil Man Syracuse, N. Y. (U.R) Sen. Estes Kefauver charged today that President Eisenhower's "ad visers" accepted a $5,000 check from the same Texas oil man whose rejected $2,500 campaign gift later sparked the Senate lob bying investigation. In a speech prepared for de livery at a Press Club luncheon here, the Democratic vice presi dential nominee cited the inci dent as a "new example of influ ence" to support "corruption" charges against the Eisenhower administration. He said he hopes the Senate's Committee on Lob bying will investigate. "I have here the photostatic copy of a check. It is dated Hous ton, Texas, Jan. 10, 1956. It is drawn on the City National Bank of Houston, Texas. It is made out to the United Republican Dinner Committee. It is in the amount of $5,000. And it is siened 'H. B. Keck'," Kefauver said. Personal Fund? Kefauver identified Keck as the president of the Superior Oil Co. of California. Keck testified before a special Senate commit tee that the $2,500 campaign con tribution rejected by Sen. Fran cis Case (R-S.D.) during Senate debate on the controversial natu ral gas bill came from his "per sonal" funds. Kefauver said the Justice De partment "must have known' about the $5,000 check. He asked whether Republican National Chairman Leonard W. Hall did not also know that Houston oil man H. B. Keck wai the source of the funds. Case's disclosure of the reject ed gift prompted the preliminary Inquiry by a special Senate com mittee which found "irresponsi--bility . . . run riot" in the Case matter and declared that Keck must share responsibility with two subordinates. Nixon Claims Small Businesses Better Under Eisenhower En Route With Nixon U.R) Vice President Richard M. Nixon said today small business will fare better under four more years of (he Eisenhower admin istration than it would under the Democrats. Nixon barnstormed four cities in his native California in the sec ond day of a 10,000-mile flying campaign tour. He replied to Democratic charges that the Republicans fa--vor big business over small en terprises. "It should be the responsibility of government to see to it that 'small business does not suffer in the hands of either big business or big governemnt," Nixon said. Nixon, in a speech prepared for a small business procurement conference in Oakland, said the Eisenhower administration has taken "positive steps which cer tainly refute any claim that we are not interested in the prob lems of the small business man." Needs Small Medium He said the American economy needs small, medium-sized and big business to be healthy. The vice president flew into the San Francisco Bay area with speeches on his schedule in Stockton, Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco after wooing Democrats across 1,000 miles of Texas. At GOP rallies in Fort Worth, San Antonio and El Paso, he urged Texas Democrats to swing their state to President Eisen hower again as they did in,1952'. He predicted "thousands" of Texas Democrats would support the Eisenhower -Nixon ticket again Nov. 6. The GOP carried Texas by 133,550 votes in 1952. Nixon conceded to newsmen that the race would be closer this time but said he was hopeful of cap turing the state's 24 electoral votes. Ike, Truman Avoid Face-lo-Face Clash Pittsburg U.R) President Eisenhower and former Presi dent Truman occupied suites at the same hotel here Tuesday, but the political rivals easily avoided a face-to-face encounter in the lobby. Mr. Truman checked into the 1600-room Penn Sheraton Hotel Monday night and Tuesday morning left the city on a barn storming tour of mill towns in the Pittsburg area. When Presi dent Eisenhower moved into the five-room presidential suite at 5 p.m., Mr. Truman was miles out of town in neighboring Westmoreland County. Commission Hopes To Stop Mooching Portland UR) The Oregon Fish Commission, meeting here yesterday, explored means of improving the lot of the com merical fisherman on the Ore gon coast and eliminating "mooching" by sport fishermen who sell their ocean-caught fish. No conclusions were reached by the commerical fishing ag ency but they agreed to make a further study of license fees and poundage tax schedules to see if the answer might lie there. O. H. Hinsdale, commission member most critical of the growing trend of sport fisher men to opperate as commerical fishermen, contended that pro bition of the use of herring bait by sport fishermen would stop the operation. Charles Henne, secretary of the Columbia River Fishermen's Protective Union, asserted that sports and commerical fisher men should receive the same treatment and Chan Schench, spokesman for the Columbia river Sportsmen's council, point ed out that the state could not ban the use of any type of bait past the three mile limit. Schench said he opposed re stricting the sports fishermen's right to use the bait but sug gested that commerical fisher men be prohibited from using it. Henne contended 'I at a pro posal to increase commerical license fees to discourage sports fishermen would not be successful. 9-Year-0ld Boy and Man are Found Safe .
