Decision Upholding Le Hells Canyon Aired by By UNITED PRESS Decision by the U. S. Court of Appeals in upholding legality of Idaho Power company's li cense for construction of a three dam development of the Hells canyon site on the Snake river drew political attention from both sides in Oregon today. Douglas McKay, who is oppos ing Sen. Wayne L. Morse for the senate, charged that Morse "de fied the orderly processes of law for his own selfish political ad vantage" and sold Adlai Steven son a "shoddy bill of goods" about Hells Canyon. 'Not End of Fight' Morse termed the court action "not the end of the fight to pre serve this macnificent multiple purpose site for full development." Woman Reports Home Broken Info Recently Ruth Josephine Masterson. 60 Orange st., Medford, reported Monday her residence had been broken Into and that a closet had been ransacked of $35 worth of clothes, according to Medford police. Mrs. Masterson reported, ac cording to police, that her resi dence had probably been en tered through an open door. Entrance was made sometime between Sept. 3 and Oct. 6, of ficers said. Articles reported missing in cluded two skirts, one blouse, three dresses and one jacket. McKay said "The court's de cision should make it clear to the people of Oregon, once and for all, that the Hells Canyon matter was decided in accord ance with the law, . and that Morse's intemperate speeches are merely defiance of the order ly processes of the law for his own selfish political advantage." Morse said "the case is going to the Supreme Court . . . and the people can save Hells Can yon ... by electing the Sle-venson-Kefauver ticket and a Democratic congress." Sen. Richard L. Neuberger de clared "this is not the end of the great struggle to prevent the surrender of priceless power and flood control resources of the Columbia Basin to private mon opoly." Holmes Attacks Smith Robert Holmes, Democratic nominee for governor, told workers at a Troutdale alum inum plant yesterday that Gov. Elmo Smith, his opponent, "is front man and figure-head for special Republican big interests that have controlled state gov ernment for many years in Ore gon." "Forward looking and humani tarian Republicans know that Smith has been anti-civil rights, anti-labor, anti-educational pro gress since 1949," Holmes de clared. Speaking in Eugene last night. Gov. Smith said he has decided to "start swinging." Said To Lack Real Issues The governor said his oppon ent has been constantly discred iting his record because he lacks gality of Politicians any real issues and is fishing for one. Smith asserted that the facts have been grossly misrepresent ed and said, "I have no need to misrepresent my' record or my opponent's, either in the Legis lature or out." Smith said he had supported the creation of a state -water re sources board while Holmes has opposed it. Melbourne, Australia U.R) Austin Rowe Preston, 60, re tired U.S. consul general, died Tuesday at his home near Mel bourne. He was a former resi dent of New York City. Linn County Escapse To Fight Extradition Albany U.R) James Ar thur Patton, one of a quartet of men who broke out of the Linn county jail here last month, will fight extradition from Cali fornia where he was captured,. Linn County Sheriff George Miller said he learned yester day that Patton, facing a life sentence when he fled jail, has refused to waive extradition pro ceedings. Patton was captured at Man hattan Beach, Calif., last Thurs day. Only one of the four es capees is still at large. Ernest Loring Gibson was ap prehended in Coos Bay last Fri day and Dan C. Ott, a third fu gitive, was found drowned in the Willamette river near Salem. Wednesday, October 10, 1958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEH Revolution Urged By Chiang Kai-shek Taipeh, Formosa U.R) Gen eralissimo Chiang Kai-shek call ed upon mainland Chinese today to overthrow the Peiping Com munist government almost the last hope of the men who fled to Formosa on Dec. 7, 1949. Political and military observ ers agreed that a revolution against the Chinese Reds would signal a counterattack by the powerful Nationalist armies to regain the mainland. But there was no estimate when and if it would occur. An air of semi - permanency has settled upon Formosa in the meantime. The Nationalists are determined to return to China but the people have been told they must wait the right mo ment a moment that now seems far away. Chiang made the appeal in "double tenth" address com memorating the founding of Na tionalist China 43 years ago on the tenth day of the tenth month by Dr. Sun Yat-Sen.
