Richard Smurthwaite Jr., member of the governor's com mittee on employment for the physically handicapped, met with the Jackson county committee here last night. Smurthwaite, who Is Oregon representative of the U. S. De partment of Labor, outlined the state committee's plans for the special week in October to pro mote employment for the handi capped. He also pledged state committee assistance to carry out the program in Jackson county and offered several ideas for the local group. Col. Arthur. M. Savard, local chairman, heard reports from committee members and plans for an essay contest in county- schools were discussed.
