FOOHTEEN MEDrORD (OBECOK) MAIL TRIBtJWE Friday. August SI, 1131 Tax Reductions Effective Tonight Washington U.R) Two tax reductions go into effect at mid night tonight, but the general public probably won't notice them a bit. One increase the tax-free minimum on amusement admis sion tickets and the other raises the tax exemption on short haul transportation tickets. In all the cuts will mean a loss to the treasury of revenue esti mated at some $66 million an nually. The amusement tax decrease was designed principally to help motion picture theatres. It means that on admission tickets of 90 cents or less there will be no 10 per cent federal tax col lected. Until now and since 1954, the tax-free minimum has been 50 cents. However, no lowering of movie prices is expected. The tax cut, like a similar one in 1954, is aimed at helping theater operators, particularly those in small towns and neighborhoods, to cushion their falling incomes, which have been increasingly depressed since the coming of television. Hodge Aides Waif Start of Terms Chicago U.R) Two key asso ciates of deposed and convicted State Auditor Orville E. Hodge, who engineered a $l-milhon em bezzlement of state funds, en tered a new phase of their lives today. Edward A. Hintz, an ex-presi dent of a Chicago bank who cashed phony checks for Hodge, was to appear in federal court and begin a three-to-five year sentence for misappropriation of about $400,000 in. federally in sured bank funds. Edward A. Epping, former of fice manager of the disgraced auditor, was to be sentenced after pleading guilty before fed eral Judge J. Sam Perry on simi lar charges. Hodge, who masterminded the fraudulent check scheme to cheat the state treasury and maintain his "high living" was . sentenced last week to 12-15 - years in state prison and was placed in Menard penitentiary.
