Chamber Folder Shows Area Activity Rise The Jackson County Charr.bcT of Commerce "facts and figures" foHer for Medford and Jackon county foraf'j out this week. It will show that things in the Rogue valley are generally growing in sue. number, or ben efit. A comparison of the 1056 folder with the one for 1955 re veais these changes from a year ago: Incerase from 3 46 to 5 47 nquare miles of territory within the city of Meaford: Increase from 19.050 to 20.033 popula'ion within Medford. and from 66,047 to 66.420 population in the county; Trading Area Increase from 31.000 to 32. 500 people within the six-mile radius city trading area; Increase from 172.000 to 197, 000 people in the secondary trad ing area: Increase from 1.505 to 1.752 mercantile f.rms in the county: Increase from 18.503 to 13. 863 people employed in the mer cantile firms of the county: Decrease from 1.770.000 to Ironsides Grassland Fire Under Control Ironsides. Ore. U.R A forest fire six miles north of here has burned 80 to 100 acres, but was thought under control this morning. Darrel Fulwider, district range manager of the Vale-Jordan grazing office of land manage ment, said the fire began Satur day afternoon. It was confined to five acres until last night when rising winds spread it to its present estimate of upwards of 100 acres. Most of the area burned was flash and yellow pine reproduc tion. Fulwider said that 90 men from the Bureau of Land Man agement and volunteers were fighting the blaze. A camp has been set up in the area for the firefighters. Six bulldozers and two pumpers have been called into the fight. Yesterday one of the tractors caught fire. The seat and wire in the vehicle were destroyed before the flames were ex tinguished. There have been several fires in the area this year. Fulwider said, but this one is the worst so far. SoTi'gf Deputy Makes Surprise Tito Visit Brioni, Yugoslavia (U.P.) Mystery today surrounded the surprise week end visit of So viet Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan with Marshal Tito. Mikoyan flew here unexpect edly Saturday. He left today. His destination was not an nounced. There was no indica tion whether he was returning to Moscow from his still myster ious visit to Yugoslavia and to Hungary. Mikoyan's visit to Budapest coincided with the ouster of Hungarian Communist party leader Matyas Rakosi, an old fciemy of Tito's. A Yugoslav official spokesman refused to divulge the reasons for Mikoyan's surprise "private visit." He refused to confirm or deny a report that Mikoyan was making arrangements for an other visit to Yugoslavia by Pre mier Nikolai Bulganin and Com munist party chief Nikita S. Khrushchev. Frying Pan Project Hay Be Cleared Soon Washington (UP' Rep. J. Edgar Chenoweth said today the $158,000,000 Frying Pan-Arkansas Froject in Colorado may be cleared by the House Rules committee Tuesday for House tion. The Colorado Republican, au thor of the Senate passed bill authorizing the project, said he understood the rules committee would consider action Tuesday and "we hope to get it cleared." The measure, drafted early this year by the House Interior committee, has been blocked for months in the rules committee. House Democratic leaders now are pushing to get it out to the floor. Miss America To Wed Crooner on Sept. 22 Denver (U.R'1 Miss America Sharon Kay Ritchie and crooner o Don Cherry will be married in Denver Sept. 22 and then reside in New York, they announced Sunday. Miss Ritchie, who will wind up a year as Miss America in September, said she was "going to devote my life to being Mrs. Cherry" Miss Ritchie won Miss Colo rado honors while attending Colorado Women's college in Denver and later was selected Mi?5 America. Her hometown is Grand Island. Neb. Airport Increase I Increase from 60.000 to 80.- 000 passenger volume yearly at the Medford airport, and from 11 to 16 flights daily; Increase from 19 to 47 private swimming pools in Medford. In addition to the above, the folder points out that during the first six months of 1956, over S2. 000, 000 in building permits were recorded for Medford on both commercial and residential property, an amount which is equal to the total construction activity for the entire year of 1955. Rogue River Girl Elected Glad Queen Grants Pass Irene Bring mann, of Rogue River, was chosen by a panel of judges to reign over the Grants Pass Gladiolus Festival and Queen Gladys XVI, at coronation cere monies Friday at the Grants Pass Hieh school football field. Miss Bringmann will preside over her court at the annual ! Gladiolus show and festival in Grants Pass city park July 28 and 29. She will also receive a S.'JOO scholarship to the cnllesc- of her choice from the Gladiolus commission. The new queen was born April 14, 10?.3. in Burlirm;ime. Calif. She came to Rogue River with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Bringmann, in 1948, and at tended the Rogue River grade and high schools. She was saluta torian of the 1956 graduating class, queen of the sweetheart ball and a cheer leader. Philippines, Japan Resume Relations Tokyo (U.Rj The Philip pines and Japan resumed diplo matic relations today almost 11 years after the end of World War II. The final ceremonial steps were taken when representatives of the two nations exchanged in struments of ratification of the S800.000.000 reparations agree ment. The Philippines ratifica tin of the San Francisco peace treaty will be deposited with the State Department in Washing ton. Foreign Minister M a m o r u Shigemitsu of Japan and Minis ter Jose F. Imperial of the Philippines signed and ex changed the reparations docu ments in a brief ceremony at the Foreign Ministry here. Widely Known Oregon Educator Succumbs Portland UJ.R1 One of Oregon's most widely known ed ucators. Hopkin Jenkins, died at his home here Saturday at the age of 80. Jenkins for many years serv ed as principal at Jefferson high school in Portland and since his retirement from active work was principal-emeritus at the school. Jenkins had been active in civic and youth work in Port land for many years. Nixon Scores Eagle In Sunday Golf Game Washington -XI.R- Vice President Richard M. Nixon, playing golf at the Columbia country club Sunday, made an eagle, the next best thing to a hole in one. The vice president knocked a four-wood shot into the cup for a two on the 363-yard, par four third hole. His total for the round was 86. Nixon has never made a hole in one. Though of somewhat doglike appearance, hyenas do not real ly belong to the dog tribe. They are. in fact, intermediate be tween the dogs and cats though actually included in the cat tribe.
