Weather conditions have ham pered a full scale aerial search most of the week but five planes did get off the ground yesterday afternoon. Ground parties went back into the rugged Cascades again to continue the job of combing hundreds of acres of densely forested mountain slopes. Missing aboard the craft are Dr. Ralph Johnston, Lebanon dentist, and Harwick Hanson, a singing evangelist from Salem The two men disappeared on a flight from here to Minneapolis, Minn. Yaquina Bay Funds Seen by Neuberger Washington (U.PJ Sen. Richard L. Neuberger estimated today that funds for an im provement project at Yaquina bay at Newport, Ore., could be appropriated' no sooner than next year. The Army engineers board of review yesterday approved a modified project authorization for the bay calling for a 40-foot bar and a 30-foot channel. Cost was estimated at $19,000,000. Newport area interests have sought the improvement project for five years, saying it would. among other things, allow in creased lumber cargos. Howard School Bonds Received by County School bonds for an addition to Howard school have been re ceived according to Karl Jan- ouch, county treasurer.. The bonds, issued for $60,000, will mature Jan. 15, 1967. The school addition will in clude classrooms, library and band room. Absentee Ballot Change Suggested; More Booths Urged Salem (U.PJ Acceptance of absentee votes up to the clos ing of the polls on election day, instead' of requiring such ballots to be filed with county clerks five days before elections, is favored by members of the Le gislative Interim committee on Elections. The committee, meeting here, also favored narrowing down the time set for application for ab sentee ballots. State Sen. Pat Lonergan. com mittee chairman, requested the research staff of the committee to make a study of the absentee vote situation and bring in rec ommendations. Soma Not Counted The subject arose as a result of complaints that some county clerks were not counting absen tee votes which reached the clerks' office on the Saturday be fore a primary election when the court house was closed. State Sen. Mark Hatfield said the committee should recom mend a change in present absen tee ballot law in order to give ev eryone a chance to vote. In other business, Rep. Ed Mann of Medford urged that steps be taken to insure more booths in election places. He said he noted much delay during the May primaries from a lack of booths. NY Lake Dragged for Body of Evangelist . Schroon Lake, N.Y. (U.R) Dragging operations continued today for the body of nationally known evangelist Dawson Trot man, 50, of Colorado Springs, Colo. Trotman, a close associate of evangelist Billy Graham, top pled from a speedboat here Monday. Police said today that 17-year-old Mildred Norwood of Walth- am, Mass., jumped over the side when Trotman fell in, but could not stop him : from sinking. A coast-to-coast memorial pro gram has been set for Saturday night to honor Trotman, director of the Navigator's Bible Memory association in Colorado Springs, a missionary group. Peg-Legged Sailor Wins $16,000 on TV Quiz Show New York (U.R) A 70-year-old peg-legged sailor and writer from Denmark won $16,000 on a television quiz program Tues day night by answering a four part question on "The Seven Seas." " Peter Freuchen sailed easily through the complicated ques tions to win the option of taking -the money he had already won Qr trying next week for the $32,000 question. He appeared on the CBS-TV program "The $64,000 Question." Yank Planes Said Buzzing Russ Ships London (U.PJ Radio Mos-1 ernment newspaper Izvestia who cow said today that American planes repeatedly "buzzed" a Soviet naval task force which is making a courtesty visit to Com munist Chinese ports. The broadcast quoted a cor respondent for the Soviet gov- accompanying the Red fleet ships. "American aircraft like tire some bumblebees are constantly circling over the warships," the correspondent said. "These un solicited travel companions are wise-j the objects of sailors' cracks." The Communist New China news agency reported from Peiping that the Soviet cruiser Dmitri Pozharsky and two ac companying destroyers had now reached the mouth of the Yangtze river en route to Shanghai. (U.R) Two boys today credited their Boy Scout training and woodsman ship with keeping them in good condition while they were lost two days and nights in rugged country west of Yale. William Reese, 17, and W. J. (Rocky) Hendricks, 15, were found by two loggers yesterday morning. They said they slept Sunday night in a hollow log and Monday climbed a ridge to get their bearings. Reese said they knew where they were by Monday afternoon but weren't sure how to get out. They slept Monday night under boughs and bark on the ridge. They became lost Sunday while on a fishing trip to Lake view Peak lage, eight miles west of Lake Merwin, as rain and fog closed in on them. The boys live at Yale where Reese's parents operate the store. They carried only sandwiches as they had expected to return Sunday afternoon. Nixon Credits Ike's Physical Program Annapolis, Md. (U.R) Vice President Richard M. Nixon said Tuesday he believes the Presi dent's Conference on Physical Fitness "has made a noteworthy contribution toward adding im petus for a fitness program." The conference concluded a two-day conclave here Tuesday with the recommendation that President Eisenhower appoint a commission to supervise a pro gram that would, aim at the over all fitness of all youth in the United States.
