(U.R) John Orman put his mongrel dog, Champ, in his automobile Tues day and turned to talk to a friend. The car rolled down an incline, went through a block of a park, ran down 13 steps, crossed a road, went 30 feet through a playfield, rode over a six-foot ledge, landed in a sparse ly wooded area, passed before two trees with inches to spare, crossed another street and came to rest against a park bench. Or man climbed into his car and drove off but Champ was a little nervous. Party Labels Don't Mean Much In Politics, Lyle Wilson Says I Wednesday, June 20, 1958 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FTVB dtiJ By LYLE C. WILSON United Press Correspondent Washington (U.R) Some an gles the voters should consider with a national election coming up are these: 1. Thepolit ical parties so liciting their votes are frauds. The party labels mean not much. 2. The plat forms upon which the can- L.jie i i,ium didates stand are largely phony rather than real statements of party policy. The platform pledges are not binding. 3. The dividing line which de fines a two-party system in the United States is more imaginary than real. Fraud Easily Seen The fraudulent nature of the political parties easily is demon strated. For example: Try to de fine the Democratic party in terms which would include such disagreeing democrats as Sen. Harry F. Byrd, Va., and Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota. Or, try to define the limits of the Republican party to include such republicans as Sen. Clifford P. Case, N. J., and Sen. William E. Jenner, Ind. Platforms are phony in pro portion to the extent to which party members ignore them. Presidents usually stick fairly close to the platforms on which they are elected. Members of Congress are less responsible men. Six out of ten of congres sional votes on major legislation will find large numbers of Re publicans voting against Eisen hower administration policies and large numbers of Democrats voting for them. The dividing line between the two major parties is more imag inary than real on the national level because neither party has a solid foundation of policy uni formly acceptable to its national membership. A conservative pol itician who might properly be labelled a Democrat in Virginia or Georgia would have to be tagged a Republican if he shift ed his voting residence to, say, Michigan or New York. Drought Worsens In Southwest Area Kansas City, Mo. (U.R) Dry, hot weather intensified a devas tating drought in the Southwest today. Farmers and livestock produc ers in many areas staked their hopes for relief on the federal government and the chance of rain. The afflicted areas Include 11 northwest Missouri counties. southwest Iowa, western and northwest Kansas, parts of Ne braska and Oklahoma, and 78 Texas counties running from the Panhandle to the Rio Grande. The drought is more than four years old in some sections. Anti-drought measures include an "Operation Haylift" to aid suffering Iowa farmers; Hay is being cut along roadsides in the state's northeast and north cen tral portions for shipment to the drought area. In the Missouri drought lands, the earth is rock-hard because of lack of moisture and acute water shortages have developed in many communities. The region is in need of water, feed and seed supplies. 3 POUND Blankets A scientific blend of 90 Rayon and 10 Nylon, in beautiful solid colors. MEDFORD, OREGON Clatsop Interested In Paper Mill Deal Astoria (U.R) The Clat sop county court announced yes terday that it had sent a letter to Crown-Zellerbach indicating its interest in a proposal for a pulp mill in Clatsop county in exchange for the right to buy Democratic strength in thethe timber off an unspecified This confusion of party labels and loyalties has been aggravat ed by the combination of politi cal groups which Franklin D. Roosevelt created and called the New Deal. He held the largely conservative South and normal North and West. To those, RFD added a substantial left wing element which embraced the ris ing giant of organized labor and gobbled up even Norman Thomas' Socialist party. The Communists were in-and-out New Dealers, flocking to FDR at the polls only after Hitler in vaded the Soviet Union and lend lease supplies began to support Stalin s military forces An FDR Maneuver Mr. Roosevelt's neatest politi cal trick was the welding to gether during his lifetime of the conservatives in the South and the Northern Democratic ma chines ruled by the big city bosses. Individual southern poli ticians balked and bolted, but the southern voting masses stay ed with FDR. American politics is a crazy, mixed-up thing. " But, better times probably are coming. How fast depends mostly on political developments in the South. When southerners have a two party system of their own, a chance to vote radical or con servative without wasting their ballots, the re-alignment of parties in the United States will move along quickly. Presidential elections of 1928-48-52 proved that the solid South isn't solid any more. President Eisenhower carried four southern states four years ago Florida, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. More significantly, he polled a respectable number of votes in each of the 10 south ern states. His vote was a sub stantial 47.7 per cent to Adlai E. Stevenson's 52.3. acreage of public forest land in the county. The letter was addressed to E. P. Stamm, vice president of the corporation. The letter follows a public meeting with Stamm in which he proposed a cooperative sus tained yield agreement, involv ing Crown-Zellerbach's timber and state owned timber, to sup ply a 400-ton pulp mill. He also said if the county court would indicate interest, the Crown company would submit a petition to the State Board of Forestry, asking permission to make an agreement of that na ture with Clatsop county.
