Absentee Ballot
Change Suggested;
More Booths Urged
Salem (U.PJ Acceptance
of absentee votes up to the clos
ing of the polls on election day,
instead' of requiring such ballots
to be filed with county clerks
five days before elections, is
favored by members of the Le
gislative Interim committee on
Elections.
The committee, meeting here,
also favored narrowing down the
time set for application for ab
sentee ballots.
State Sen. Pat Lonergan. com
mittee chairman, requested the
research staff of the committee
to make a study of the absentee
vote situation and bring in rec
ommendations. Soma Not Counted
The subject arose as a result
of complaints that some county
clerks were not counting absen
tee votes which reached the
clerks' office on the Saturday be
fore a primary election when the
court house was closed.
State Sen. Mark Hatfield said
the committee should recom
mend a change in present absen
tee ballot law in order to give ev
eryone a chance to vote.
In other business, Rep. Ed
Mann of Medford urged that
steps be taken to insure more
booths in election places. He said
he noted much delay during the

Lost Boys Credit
Training as Scouts
Kelso, Wash. (U.R) Two
boys today credited their Boy
Scout training and woodsman
ship with keeping them in good
condition while they were lost
two days and nights in rugged
country west of Yale.
William Reese, 17, and W. J.
(Rocky) Hendricks, 15, were
found by two loggers yesterday
morning. They said they slept
Sunday night in a hollow log
and Monday climbed a ridge to
get their bearings. Reese said
they knew where they were by
Monday afternoon but weren't
sure how to get out. They slept
Monday night under boughs and
bark on the ridge.
They became lost Sunday
while on a fishing trip to Lake
view Peak lage, eight miles
west of Lake Merwin, as rain
and fog closed in on them. The
boys live at Yale where Reese's
parents operate the store.
They carried only sandwiches
as they had expected to return
Sunday afternoon.
