In County Schools. McLOUGHLIN JUNIOR HIGH The McLoughlin Junior High school band appeared in the Pear festival Farade April 21. They are busy preparing for the Southern Oregon band con test which will be held in Ash land Friday and Saturday, April 27 and 23. They are also pre paring numbers for appearances in three radio and one television show in the near future. The annual spring concert .will be held in the McLoughlin gym May 18. The band will send ensembles to entertain stu dent bodies x at the Oak Grove and G-iffin Creek schools. The band has appointments to play in the Armed Forces Day parade, the Pioneer Day celebration at Phoenix, and the Memorial Day parade at Med-ford. Students wearing patches on clothing last week signified their intention to attend the Patch Hop sponsored by the band. Mc Loughlin girls prepared two patches, pinned one on the part ner of their choice, and wore the matching patch. Some girls used colorful prints, some de signed patches, and others used materials of check or stripes. The dance was held Friday, April 20. Multi-colored patches, shotguns, corncob pipes, hats and a mural decoroated the girls gym. A "Chick Sales" centered the dance floor. Punch and Cup cakes were served from a table covered with a patched cloth. Intermission enterta inment was provided by the ninth grade girls trio, Coleen Barr, Susan Hall, and Rosemary Doolen. A picked group of 80 singers from the McLoughlin choruses will sing for the Democratic dinner at Hedrick school April 23. An original song will be sung to Mrs. Roosevelt, and three chorus members will be presented. Mrs. Lenore Zapell will give a Stephen Vincent Benet poem with a choral back-'-ound. Ray Lewis will direct ti e chorus and Melody Pierce will accompany on the piano. The baby sitting course at McLoughlin has been completed, end 85 per cent of those regis tered qualified for certificates. Twenty-eight seventh graders, 23 eighth graders, and 32 ninth graders completed the classes and tests. Lectures and demonstrations were given by Miss Collard of the public health department, Sgt. Clyde Fichtner of the police department. Fireman Leroy Wil liams of the westside station, and Mrs. Roland Holmes, who represented the mothers and the PTA. Written examinations and demonstration tests were given at the close of the class series. The certificates will be awarded at an assembly. JACKSONVILLE SCHOOL The Jacksonville first graders will hold a pre-school visitation day and party, -for all boys and girls entering the first grade in Jacksonville next fall, Friday, April 27, from 12:30 to 2:30, p.m. The first graders are sponsor ing the program to acquaint the new students with the school program, school books, building, activities, and faculty. Parents are welcome. Operetta Planned at McLoughlin School The vocal music department of McLoughlin Junior High school is preparing an operetta which will be given at McLough lin school May 4. "Belle of the West" is the story of a glamor ous lady barber from the east, who goes west to Roaring Creek. Leading roles will be played by Dennis Barr, Shirley Lilly, Rosemary Doolen, Don Marshall, George Koch, Judy McGraw, Larry Nolte, Karen Lytle, and Mike Murray. The music and dramatic direction is being done by Ray Lewis and Don Darneille. Miss Anne Gentle is supervising the costuming, and Steve Bay less is doing the stage setting and scenery. A matinee will be presented for students on May 3 and the public performance will be May 4 at 8 p.m. in the McLoughlin boys gym. The play will be present ed at the Hedrick Junior High cafetorium April 26 and 27 at 8 p.m. The set construction commit tee is constructing an English library set, which will be used throughout most of the scenes of the play. The members of this committee are Pete Rasmussen, Tony Monroe, Bill Maurer, Dick Phair, Clark Barker, Roddy Craig, John Howard, and Larry Anderson. The properties and costumes committee is assembling furni ture and properties for the set. This committee. is made up of Sharon Carr, Lou Elsa Voegtly, and Judith Ross. Program, Tickets . The program and tickets com mittee is designing and printing programs and tickets This com mittee consists of Linda Horton, Marsha O'Sullivan, Carole Klatt, and Marlene Miller. The publicity committee is making posters and writing pub licity stories for the play. This committee is Linda Horton, Judy Riebe, JoAnn Jamison, Claudia Hoover, and Oveta Walden. HEDRICK JUNIOR HIGH On April 20, Mrs. Mary Athanas' seventh grade home room presented an assembly for students of Hedrick Junior High school. Bob Mclntyre was mas ter of ceremonies. The students gave comical interpretations of what goes on in Robert Work's geography class, Mrs. Eileen Meek's music class, and Ward Smith's band class.. The seventh grade yell leaders led some yells and the assembly was closed with the school song. The Community's Biggest Marketplace Grange Phoenix Grange Tuesday, April 24, will be candidates night at Phoenix Grange. All candidate are in vited and allowed a limited time to speak. Members of Phoenix 4-H club, under the charge of Agriculture Chairman Charles Hockersmith, will put on a demonstration be ginning at 8 p.m. The public is invited. Regular Grange meeting will follow the candidates open meeting. Geld Hill Grange Meeting of the Gold Hill Grange was held April 19, with a large attendance of members and several visitors. The business consisted of com mittee reports, and the election and installing of Lena Laricks as the new secretary. The ways and means commit tee reporated good attendance to the Saturday night dances. The float in the Pear Blossom Parade was the creation of the committee on that event. The Gold Hill Grange was thrilled when their candidate was chosen as Queen of the festival. The lecture hour consisted of chorus singing and a reading on the Gold Hill Fair and Sal mon Bake in past years. There will be a breakfast in the Grange hall Sunday, May 6 for the benefit of the Rock Point Cemetery project. The Grange closed with the retiring drill at 10:30 p.m. The next serving committee will be announced later. Douthit Accepted for NROTC Scholarship Central Point Nathan Dout hit, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Douthit of Central Point, has been notified he has been ac cepted for a Naval Reserve Of ficers Training corps college scholarship. Douthit, who will graduate from Crater High school this year, is one of 21 men in Oregon accepted for the program. The scholarship entitles Dout hit to a four-year education at a eollege offering mi NROTC program. iJouthit also has applied for a scholarship at Harvard. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of mental and physical tests and a personal interview. 4-H Club News Gold Hill Sewing Club The Flashing Seamstresses met April 19 in the sewing room of the Hanby school in Gold Hill. The meeting was called to order by Dianne Jore, president. Judy Higgins led the 4-H pledge, and the flf aahtt wu led by Sue Woodward. We got two pairs of scissors with our treasury money, and Mrs. Ferd Jones gave us a package of needles. Miss Marjorie Hattan, 4-H county agent visited us. The meeting was turned over to our B. J. Officers said upholstery tacks apparently spilled from a truck yesterday and were to blame for a brief tire repair boom.
