?.lr. ft,f Candidates Quarrel Over Minnesota Primary Backers Minneapolis, Minn. U.R Adlai E. Stevenson and Sen. Estes Kefauver quarreled today over Stevenson's powerful Min nesota primary backers. . 0 It was the closest the two Democratic presidential candi- , dates have come to attacking each other instead of the Repub licans. And it was coupled with a sweeping blast against Eisen hower administration '"huck sterism" from Stevenson and charges that the President is dodging decisions from " Ke fauver. Campaign Strain Stevenson, his voice cracking from the strain of the campaign, warned Kefauver at Eveleth and Grand Rapids Thursday night that he is risking a party split by attacking the Illinoisan's top Minnesota backers, Sen- Hubert Humphrey and Gov. Orville Freeman. Stevenson scolded "my dis tinguished and respected friend" for his broad hints that Humph rey and Freeman jumped on the Stevenson bandwagon because of "ambitions outside the boun daries of the state." "I regret that DFL Democratic-Farmer-Labor leaders should be attacked . . . merely because they saw fit to endorse me," Stevenson said. "I suspect the Republicans' want, nothing ' more than to divide the Demo cratic party. I had hoped we O would not divide ourselves." Avoid Clash Kefauver sought to avoid a personal clash with Stevenson in a speech at Duluth. O He did not take back his state ments about Freeman and i TmCwc I m And I keep dreaming of foreign luxuries . . . automo biles ... yachts . . . OlD Mr. BpSTON VODKA." Humphrey, but he promised "no word of criticism of Mr. Steven son will come from my lips. I fought hard for him in i952 and I would do the' same in 1956 K he gets the nomination." At Eveleth, Stevenson charged the Eisenhower administration with "deadly drift" and "huck stering, melodrama, misrepre sentation and merchandising." Kefauver accused Mr. Eisen hower of standing aside in North Africa and the Middle East "just as he is standing aside in one of the crucial issues at home that of solving differ ence between the races with charity and justice for all." Allon Says Israel Musi Keep Balance Portland (U.R) Israel must maintain a balance of power in the Near East or war between it and Egypt is inevitable, Brig. Gen., Yigal Allon of Israel's armed forces said yesterday. Gen. Allon said danger of war has been heightened by the "vast arms" Egypt has received from Russia and other Communist countries. "Egypt already is sat urated with arms," he said. - Gen. Allon is not on active duty at the present time and is on a two-month visit to this coun try . to help raise funds for - re settlement in Israel of Jewish refugees in North Africa.
