Noel Cow ard, the darling of the inter national set and enfant terrible of TV, faces up to a tricky prob lem within the next few days. The question: Whether Cow ard gets airtime or just gets the air. Coward, a performer who is almost as well-traveled as Char lie Chan, may get his walking papers from the auto firm that sponsors his spectaculars. The firm is reported to consider Coward too sophisticated for the nation's living rooms. Another Point And there is another point of conflict. Coward wants to do his next show from New York. The auto maker, however, insists that it be channelled from Holly wood. The reason there is no CBS-TV color studio in New York big enough to house sev eral automobiles for TV com mercials. Thus far this season, the multi threat actor, writer, director, composer, poet and producer English performer has turned out two special shows for CBS TV, "Blithe Spirit" and "To gether With Music." Each won a fair measure of acclaim. Coward's next effort is sched uled to take place on May 5, but nobody seems to know lor sure whether this event will take place at all. A Bit Too Hot Last week, Coward submitted to CBS-TV a revised version of "Present Laughter," an old ed Sew Chart shows you every step. Coward called it quite in nocently, "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." However, Coward's auto sponsor decided it was a bit too hot for TV since it re volved around Coward's favorite theme adults and adultery. The past Monday, CBS-TV told Coward it simply wouldn't do On Wednesday, there were hurried meetings in the offices of the high CBS brass. Time was running out. The auto sponsor's next spectacular for CBS-TV. "Twentieth Century" with Orson Welles and Betty Grable, is set for April 7. The May 5 vehicle and cast must be chosen by then. It was decided to give Coward another chance. Another old Coward effort, "This Happy Breed," which Coward just re vised while vacationing in Ja maica, was submitted to CBS of ficials and the auto sponsor. "This Happy Breed" is quite wholesome, so wholesome in fact, that its TV title will be "Family Life," if it does go on. It was made into a successful movie during World War II. Frightening Words However, despite the whole someness of the new vehicle, it is known that the auto sponsor is still a bit frightened of Cow ard. He used "damn" and "hell" in "Blithe Spirit" against the wishes of the CBS censor. And he sang a rather naughty song in his first spectacular, "To gether With Music." Whatever the decision on "This Happy Breed," it seems a cinch that Coward won't give up without a fight. His approach to problems like this one is often quite extra-ordinary once as a youth Coward bit the arm of a grammar teacher simply because Coward didn't like grammar. Coward is not expected to bite the TV hand that feeds him, but he may just keep flooding CBS TV with scripts for the next month. He is a facile writer he turned out "Private Lives" in one week, "Hay Fever" at a week end party and "Design For Living" during a two week cruise from Panama to Los An geles. As one source close to Coward put it this week: "He hasn't even begun to dip into his ma terial. He still has 27 days he can revise." Western Airlines io Resume Operations Los Angeles (U.R) Western Air Lines resumes flight opera tions March 22 after a strike that forced the company to suspend service last Jan. 9. The airline and the Brother hood of Railway Clerks reached agreement on a new contract Monday to end the walkout of 850 clerks and baggage handlers. When the clerks struck, the com pany furloughed most of its other employes and suspended flight operations. Western serves 45 cities in 12 Western states and Canada. The company said it hopes to have full service restored by Easter Sunday. Meanwhile, the Air Line Pilots Assn. denied a claim by Western that it had signed a new contract with the airline Feb. 10. The association and air line were scheduled to meet today to continue efforts to reach agree ment on supplementary pension plan. Western said it had reach ed agreement with the pilots during the clerks' walkout and the contract was to take effect after settlement of the strike. Representatives of the Pilots Association denied that any agreement had been reached. Use Tribune Want Ads For Action, Two Arraigned on Kidnapping Charges Klamath Falls (U.R) Max Franklin Allen, 22, Riverside, Mo., and his wife, Mary Alice Allen, 17, a Kansas City, Kans., waitress, were arraigned before U.S. Commissioner Bert C. Thomas yesterday on federal kid nap charges. Bail was set at S10, 000 for Allen and $2,500 for his wife. Joseph Santoiana, FBI agent in charge at Portland, said the Aliens were accused of taking George Tidona from his home in Johnson county, Kans., March 5, and forcing him to open a safe in his ballroom in Kansas City, Mo. They were arrested yesterday near Gilchrest. A third person taken into cus tody with the pair, Jerald Rich ard Domick, 21, Detroit, Mich., was sentenced to 30 days in the Klamath county jail on a charge of illegal use of auto license plates. The two planes from the same ' squadron crashed within a few hours of each other Wednesday night. One demolished a house, but the five occupants escaped with minor injuries.
