o H Tuesday, March 6, 195S MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THIRTEEN ow Medford.-iTrib une Mayes Hitting, Catching Delights Giants' Manager By UNITED PRESS "Willie Mays is up to his old tricks again in spring training. Folks almost forgot about the New York Giants' celebrated centerfielder last year amid all that hoop-la over the Dodgers finally making good in the World Series, even though he did win the major league homer crown -gith 51. But he's making them ah sit up and take notice again at Phoenix, Ariz. First, he started whacking the ball like maybe he'll come even closer to Babe Ruth's rec ord of 60 homers this season, and he highghted an intra squad game day before yester day with a big home run belt. Special Catches Yesterday Willie used his glove and arm to make new Giant Manager Bill Rigney say "hey" in surprised delight. First he sprinted to within a couple of feet of center field fence to make one of those special catches of his. Then, he chased up the left-center alley to grab Ed Bessoud's double as it bang ed off the 350-foot sign. Rookie J3ob Lennon tried to score from 4irst on the blow, but Willie nailed him with a tremendous one-bounce throw to the plate. Around the camps: The Giants bought catcher Jim Man- gan, 26-year-old playing manag er of El Paso last year, from the Pittsburgh Pirates on a waiver deal .(i) . Pettit's Scoring Bid Threatened New York OJ.R) Bob Pettit's bid for teh scoring crown in the National Basketball Assn. faced dangerous threats today from veteran Paul Arizin and rookie Maurice Stokes, as the season went into its final week. Six-foot, nine-inch Pettit of the St. Louis Hawks clung to the lead in both races in official league statistics today, topping the scoring with 1,603 points and a 25.0 per game average and top ping rebounds with 1,054. But Arizin, former scoring champion from the Philadelphia Warriors, sliced a whopping 43 points from Pettit's scoring lead during the past week and now stands only 32 points behind with 1,571. One thing going for Pettit here, however, is that he has one more game left than Arizin. Mental Hospital Delay May Hamper Funds Salem (U.R) Officials said to day that delay in selecting a site for the proposed $14,000,000 mental hospital probably will prevent the next session of the state Legislature from acting on additional funds for the project. The last session appropriated S6,000,000 for construction of the first unit but a site has not been chosen. Three sites, two in the Wil sonville area and the third near Hillsboro, are under considera tion by the State Board of Con trol. The law specifies that the institution must be built within a 20-mile radius of Portland. Officials said that funds for construction of the state inter mediate institution probably will be sought at the next state legis lative session. Site for the correc tional institution has been chosen some 14 miles north of Salem.
