Delights Giants' Manager
By UNITED PRESS
"Willie Mays is up to his old
tricks again in spring training.
Folks almost forgot about the
New York Giants' celebrated
centerfielder last year amid all
that hoop-la over the Dodgers
finally making good in the
World Series, even though he
did win the major league homer
crown -gith 51. But he's making
them ah sit up and take notice
again at Phoenix, Ariz.
First, he started whacking
the ball like maybe he'll come
even closer to Babe Ruth's rec
ord of 60 homers this season,
and he highghted an intra
squad game day before yester
day with a big home run belt.
Special Catches
Yesterday Willie used his
glove and arm to make new
Giant Manager Bill Rigney say
"hey" in surprised delight. First
he sprinted to within a couple
of feet of center field fence to
make one of those special
catches of his. Then, he chased
up the left-center alley to grab
Ed Bessoud's double as it bang
ed off the 350-foot sign. Rookie
J3ob Lennon tried to score from
4irst on the blow, but Willie
nailed him with a tremendous
one-bounce throw to the plate.
Around the camps: The
Giants bought catcher Jim Man-
gan, 26-year-old playing manag
er of El Paso last year, from the
Pittsburgh Pirates on a waiver
deal .(i) . Yankee Manager Casey
Stengel , opens his "shortstop
fcrby" in an intrasquad game
today with 10 candidates trying
to succeed Phil Rizzfito, includ
ing Rizzuto . . . Red Sox skip
per Mike Higgins said slugger
'fe$ Williams would make "an
appearance" against the Dodg-
60rtj in the first exhibition game
Saturday.
Jlrtts ignd Pains
SKg Ted Kluszewski of Cin
(glnnati reported his usual spring
case of aches and pains in those
big muscles, but the Redlegs
weren't worried . . . George
(g Crowe, Milwaukee's last hold
out, agreed to terms by phone
and was expected in camp to
day . . . The Kansas City A's
planned their first intra-squad
game today . . . Phillies Man
ager Mayo Smith indicated that
Granny Hamner will switch
back from second base to short
stop this season . . . Cribs' Man
ager Stan Hack named Johnny
Briggs, Bob Anderson, and Dick
! Drott to pitch against Baltimore
i in Saturday's exihibition open-
Senators' Manager Chuck
Dressen said rookie Herb Plews
would take over second base
and Pete Runnels will shift to
the outfield, at least in spring
training . . Pirate rookie pitch
er Joe Trimble gave up six
walks in one inning and a to
tal of nine in three frames . . .
And Baltimore "bonus baby"
Wayne Causey was slated for
a tonsillectomy today, designed,
of course, to cure his sore arm.
Pettit's Scoring
Bid Threatened
New York OJ.R) Bob Pettit's
bid for teh scoring crown in the
National Basketball Assn. faced
dangerous threats today from
veteran Paul Arizin and rookie
Maurice Stokes, as the season
went into its final week.
Six-foot, nine-inch Pettit of
the St. Louis Hawks clung to the
lead in both races in official
league statistics today, topping
the scoring with 1,603 points and
a 25.0 per game average and top
ping rebounds with 1,054.
But Arizin, former scoring
champion from the Philadelphia
Warriors, sliced a whopping 43
points from Pettit's scoring lead
during the past week and now
stands only 32 points behind
with 1,571. One thing going for
Pettit here, however, is that he
has one more game left than
Arizin.
ON LOOK TEAM
New York OJ.R) Bill Russell
of San Francisco and Sihugo
Green of Duquesne today were
named to the Look magazine All-
America basketball team for the
second straight year. The 10-man
squad also included Bob Burrow,
Kentucky; Tom Heinsohn, Holy
Cross; Joe Holup, George Wash
ington; Robin Freeman, Ohio
State; K. C. Jones, San Francis
co; Willie Naulls, UCLA; Ron
Shavlik, North Carolina State,
and Bill Uhl, Dayton.
NEEDLES FAVORITE

Mental Hospital Delay May Hamper Funds
Salem (U.R) Officials said to
day that delay in selecting a site
for the proposed $14,000,000
mental hospital probably will
prevent the next session of the
state Legislature from acting on
additional funds for the project.
The last session appropriated
S6,000,000 for construction of
the first unit but a site has not
been chosen.
Three sites, two in the Wil
sonville area and the third near
Hillsboro, are under considera
tion by the State Board of Con
trol. The law specifies that the
institution must be built within
a 20-mile radius of Portland.
Officials said that funds for
construction of the state inter
mediate institution probably will
be sought at the next state legis
lative session. Site for the correc
tional institution has been chosen
some 14 miles north of Salem.

Applegato 4-H Tractor Club
We held our last fleeting at
the home of Francis Krouse Feb.
28. After our business meeting
we helped complete plans for the
third annual Applegate 4-H Min
strel show to be presented on Fri
day, March 16, at 8 p.m. in the
Applegate school gymnasium.
High school students and adults
will be admitted for 75 cents;
grade school students for 25
cents and all pre-school children
free.
The Applegate 4-H Knitting
club will have a candy booth set
up that night.
The members of the Applegate
Extension unit will have charge
of the booth selling refreshments.
The money taken in at the
Minstrel show will be used to
help the 4-H club program in the
Applegate valley. This is the
third year we have gathered
talent from all over the valley
and produced this show. We
think it will be even better than
the one we had last year.
