SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE HENLEY, BROOKINGS DARKHORSES EN A-2 SUBDISTRICT TOURNAMENT Rogue League basketball teams know what to expect in each other but Henley and Brookings will be in the category of virtual unknowns for the District 6 A-2 southern division tourney. Action opens with two games Thursday at the Crater high gym in Central Point. Semi-finals will be Friday and finals Saturday. Rogue League participants are Phoenix, Crater, Eagle Point and Illinois Vaey. .&agie foini wm oppose nen ley at 7 p.m. tomorrow and Brookings will take on Illinois Valley about 8:30 p.m. Henley has naa no foes . in common with Rogue aggrega tions. However, on the basis of their play with Klamath 'county ,33 clubs, the Hornets are listed definitely in contender category Brookings can't be counted out. The coast club has two early season wins on record over the IV Cougars and has split with Crescent City, Calif., which tripped Crater twice. A season record of eight vic tories and five setbacks is listed for Henley which played inde pendent of any league during the regular slate. Phoenix, Crater Byes Phoenix, as Rogue champ, and Crater, as runner-up, drew first round byes. Tomorrow's EP-Hen- ley winner will play Phoenix in the 7 p.m. mix Friday. Crater will follow against the IV-Brook- mgs victor. Thursday s losers vie in the first of three Saturday games. Friday's beaten clubs play the second Saturday tussle, aiming for third place. Crater Principal Arthur Straus, in charge of tourney prepara tions, said that game referees will be Barney Riggs, .Dutch Meyer, Darrell Copeland and Lee Flink. MedfordTribune YMCA, MERCHANTS VIE ON ROGUE RIVER FLOOR FOR AAU DISTRICT SPOT Medford ''YMCA, which has come strong so far in " play-off encounters, . makes " the big try for Jackson-Josephine county AAU title tonight in a sub-district tourney final against the Rogue River Merchants. The game will be at 9 p.m. at the Rogue River high gymnas ium. Winner of the tangle will get a berth in the four-team district tournament but there will still be hope for tonight's loser. That team on Thursday will play Firmco Of Myrtle Creek at Grants Pass for a district play off spot. YMCA won its finale role Monday night by , turning . the tables on the Prospect Lions 83 to 70. Prospect was champ of the Medford Independent Basket ball League and tripped the Y. second place club, twice in the circuit. Rogue River beat Camp's Electric of Grants Pass Monday 59 to 52 in another instance of a second place team spilling a champion. The Merchants naa split with Camp's in the Grants Pass city loop. Coach Don Mintz has indi cated that his club should be intact for tonight's hassle. Larue Smith, Dick and Derald Wooton, Bob Serak and Roland Thomp son are likely starters. Ex-Rogue River high players predominate on the Merchant's squad. Likely starters are Bill Bean, Ted Stanfield, Roger Clark, Junior Dimick and Tink er Hatfield. Clark is a state policeman who has taken part in past years in Medford loop play. Hatfield is Rogue River high football coach. Camp's and Wimer will play at 7:30 o'clock opener this eve ning.
