Rogue League participants are
Phoenix, Crater, Eagle Point and
Illinois Vaey.

Crater, as runner-up, drew first
round byes. Tomorrow's EP-Hen-
ley winner will play Phoenix in
the 7 p.m. mix Friday. Crater
will follow against the IV-Brook-
mgs victor. Thursday s losers
vie in the first of three Saturday
games. Friday's beaten clubs
play the second Saturday tussle,
aiming for third place.

a berth in the four-team district
tournament but there will still

YMCA won its finale role

getting rid of a coach and hiring
a new' one is no sure-fire formu
la for success. -

today from their objective of
third place in the Eastern Divi
sion of the National Basketball

playoffs. For the fifth straight
time they were beaten by the
Syracuse Nationals, 108-107, in
two overtime periods at Madison
Square Garden. ;
Syracuse, riding high with a
six-game . winning streak, now
has a third place lead of a game
and a half over the Knicks.
Team Slips
Ironically, when Joe Lapchick
gave up the ghost as coach, the
Knicks were in third place, com
fortably ahead of , Syracuse. But
since' Vince. Boryla took over as
head man on Feb. 12 the New
Yorkers have won only two
games while losing five.
In the opener of the Garden
double bill, Jack Twyman hit
with three field goals and seven
free shots in 11 attempts in the

Commission Approves
Track Near Portland

county commissioners yesterday
approved the county planning
commission's recommenda t i o n
that the Multnomah Kennel club
be allowed to construct a dog
racing track on a 90-acre tract
near Wood Village.
The ' unanimous action came
after a hearing yesterday (morn
ing when Wood Villagers and
their supporters presented their
final arguments to the commis
sioners, asking that the planning
commission approval be rejected.

Sowell of the University of
Pittsburgh today credited a
"built-in" gear shift and the en
durance of an . eight-day! clock
for his rapid rise as a crack middle-distance
runner and hot
prospect for the U.S. Olympic
team. ; - - . . ';

ability either to speed up or
slow down during a race, de
pending upon the situation.
Something Tells
'Something just tells me
when to put myself in high gear,
slow down . to second or " drop
intp low," he said following a
rugged two-hour workout at the
Pitt Stadium.
"This endurance thing came
to me after my coach, Carl 01
sor , suggested that I run each
fall with the Pitt cross-country
team, Arnie said. "Endurance
is just as important to a middle
distance man as it is to a miler."
Sowell, who collects progres
sive jazz records when he's not
setting records of his own by
pounding the cinders and indoor
boards, successfully defended
his National AAU 1,000-y a r d
championship last Saturday
night.
LITCHMAN HURT
Eugene (U.R) 'Art Litch-
man, athletic publicity director
at the University of Oregon, was
treated for head injuries at a
local hospital yesterday after a
two-car collision here. He later
was released from the hospital.
Driver of the other car was not
hurt.
