SIX MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, January 17. 1958 Farmers Noi To Be Fooled, Nixon Says Washington (U.R) Vice- President Richard M. Nixon says that "Farmers are not go ing to be fooled" by former President Truman's call for a re turn to rigid 90 per cent of par ity farm price supports. In an unusual Sunday state ment, Nixon said Mr. Truman and others "following his line" on farm policies "should start thinking about the farmer first and politics second. Nixon blamed the farmer's economic plight largely on Tru man administration policies. Mr. Truman said in St. Paul, Minn., that "the mess in agricul ture is clearly attributable to the Eisenhower administration." He added that the administra tion "is out of sympathy with the needs of agriculture" and should return to a 90 per cent of parity program. Nixon said "Mr. Truman's memory seems to be playing tricks with him. What he appar ently fails to realize is that he in fact is criticizing his own . . program which was in effect during virtually the entire pe riod when farm prices were go ing down." Crew of Nautilus Cuts Birthday Cake Isfew London, Conn. '(U.R) The crew of the submarine Nau tilus cut a birthday cake today to celebrate the first anniver sary of the world's first atomic- powered vessel. One year ago today the Nau tilus moved down the Thames river and her skipper flashed the historic message: "Under way on nuclear power." The Nautilus now is in dry dock. Work is progressing near by on the second nuclear-powered submarine, "Seawol f," which was launched last July 21, and on the "Skate," whose keel was laid the same day. Ike May Speak Up On Name in Primaries Washington (U.R) President Eisenhower may have something to say in a day or two about the entry of his name in a couple of presidential primaries. Mr. Eisenhower's name has been entered in the presidential primaries in New Hampshire March 13 and in Illinois April 10. A White House spokesman de clined., to discuss Mr. Eisen hower's reaction to the entering of his name in the New Hamp shire primary, of which' he was notified yesterday. The president may discuss the matter at a news conference tomorrow, but is not expected to say whether he will run for another term. Democratic presidential candi date Adlai Stevenson is making a quick tour of Minnesota today to get his first presidential pri mary campaign under way. Stevenson will enter his name in the March 20 Minnesota pri mary himself. He also will meet with state Democratic leaders and make a hand-shaking tour of the St. Paul-Minneapolis Ford plant. Senate Debating Natural Gas Bill Washington (U.R) The Sen ate today went into its second day of debate on the controver sial natural gas bill. The bill 'would exempt inde pendent natural gas- producers from government price regula tion. Backers of the measure have warned that its defeat- might cause a fuel shortage in the east. But opponents of the bill say it would boost gas rates for the na tion's 30,000,000 gas consumers. Bank Stockholders To Vote on Merger Portland i(U.R) Stockhold ers of the U. S. National Bank of Portland meet here this aft ernoon to vote on a proposed merger with the Coos Bay Na tional Bank of Coos Bay. Coos Bay National stockhold ers met in Coos Bay yesterday and approved the merger. E. C. Sammons, president of U. S. National, said if the stock holders approved the merger, a representative of the bank would fly to Washington tonight to present the papers to the comptroller of currency for final approval. The comptroller gave preliminary approval at the time application for the merger was filed late last year. As one travels up hill and is ap proaching "The Top," there is a sensation of driving right up into the sky.- A suggestion has been offered, 'Why not call it the Jacksonville Skyway?" Mrs. Dorothy A. Post, mother of Mrs. E. Ramsev of Ruch. came up here from Sacramento, Calif., to stay with ner daughter during the holidays. Mrs. Lee Port of Ruch has been ill and under the doctor's care since November. Her daugh ter, Mrs. Harlan Clark from Eu gene, Ore., has been here several weeks to be with her mother. Mrs. J. S. Larson, who Iivps on Highway 238, was elated as she reported that her dau enter. Sharon, had won the grand prize in tne Ouy Lombardo Television contest. She stated that Sharon had won a radio on a previous entry. Neighbors in the vicinity share the opinion that the Ruch school is tutoring quite a tal ented girl. Mrs. A. Pawlowski. on top of Jacksonville hill on Highway 238, is an active ob server for the Ground Observer Corps of Jacksonville. Simultaneously, sne recalled the old 9F farmer line, and exnressed her grati tude and deep appreciation for tne cooperation of the patrons for relinquishing the line so that she could make prompt reports of aircraft in the area. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Snyder, also residing on "Top o' the Hill" were host and hostess to several out-of-town, visitors re cently. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Camp bell and family from Ashland spent a week end with them. Mrs. Snyder's sister, Mrs. C. M. Richey, and family, of Corvallis, stopped for an overnight' visit on their return trip from Los Angeles. Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Sikes and family whose home is also on "Top o' the Hill," but who have lived in Sacramento since last fall, also were visitors of the Snyder residence. Mrs. Cora Stone, mother of Mrs. Snyder, has gone for a visit to her other daughter, Mrs. C. M. Richey, -in Corvallis for an in definite stay. Mrs. P. Zimmerman of 143 Vashti Way, went to Banks, Ore., the first of the week of the New Year, due to the illness of her mother. Mrs. H. C. . McDonald. Mrs. Zimmerman stayed there for one week, and returned with her mother, who is now staying at the Zimmerman residence. Ellender Raps Soil Bank Plan Washington i(U.R) Democratic Senator Allen J. Ellender of Louisiana said today the admin istration's proposed soil bank program won't boost farm in come this year. Ellender said there's just one way to get more money into the hands of farmers in 1956 . . . to raise their income by increasing price supports. The Louisiana senator is chair man of the senate agriculture committee, which today opened a week-long, series of hearings on a new farm bill. Among the first witnesses to day was to be Republican Sena tor, Homer Capehart of Indianav Capehart, in a statement pre pared for the hearing, said farm income must be raised to match the general national prosperity. And he urged the committee to approve his bill setting up a three-year surplus disposal pro gram, a plan to give surplus foods to needy people at home and abroad. BUSY JUDGES Chicago U.R) Circuit court judges here are experimenting with a double-shift to accomo date the crush of cases. The plan calls for one judge to work a courtroom from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and another to take over from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. In December, 13 extra out-of-city judges were called in to help five regular judges-in the test.
