rOTO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Sunday, January 13, 1956 I : it v, ft ; Philharmonic Guild Promotes Coming Concert of Orchestras Miss Linda Brooks Medford Couple To Wed in June Mrs. Vera Findley, 503 Spen cer avenue, announces the en gagement of her daughter, Miss Linda prooks, to Ronald Mete, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Mete, 32 Myers court. v Miss Brooks is a student at Medford Senior high school. Mr. Mete is employed by Midway Meat Packing company. The wedding is planned for June. PTA Counci Tp Meet Wednesday Jackson County Council of Parent-Teacher associations will meet Wednesday, January 18 at 10:30 a.m. in the Phoenix Com munity club, Phoenix. Phoenix PTA will he the hostess unit, and their president, Mrs. W. B. Smith, states that coffee will be served at 10:15 a.m. The hos tess unit will also serve the sal ad luncheon at noon for a nom inal charge. Child care will be provided for a 50-cent fee per family. Mrs. C. F. Conley, Jackson County council president, ex tends an invitation to every parent-teacher member in Jack son County to attend this meet ing. The election of a nominatj ing committee will be one of the items of business. The program will be of espe cial interest to local unit chair man for the magazine, "The Na tional Parent-Teacher," and for tuition scholarship chairmen. Mrs. Floyd Barrett, Grants Pass, Oregon Congress magazine chairman, will present informa tion concerning the official PTA magazine. Mrs. Barrett recently returned from Chicago where she rSet with other state maga zine chairmen, and will report on this meeting. At the afternoon session, sev eral persons will discuss the Oregon PTA Congress tuition scholarship program. Mrs. El dora Nelson, Ashland, Jackson County council scholarship chairman, will present facts a"bout the participation of the council in the program. Mrs. Leigh Gustison, Medford, a mem ber of the state congress scholar ship committee representing this area, will discuss the work of that committee. Two students from Southern Oregon college's school of educa tion who have received tuition scholarships will tell of the re quirements they fulfilled to qualify for the scholarship, and the courses they must take to complete their training. Lodges to Hold Annual 0Ceremony In Central Point Central Point Mt. -Pitt Re- bekah lodge, and Central Point Odd Fellows have planned joint installation of officers for Mon day, January 16. The ceremonies will be held at 8:30 p.m. in the Central Point Grange hall. The public is invited to attend Ellsworth Robinson will be installed noble grand for the Odd Fellow lodge, and Mrs James E. Farrar will take office as noble grand of Mt. Pitt lodge Harry Newnham, district deputy grand master, and Mrs, Paul Thompson, district deputy president, will head the install ing teams. Both are from the Gold Hill lodge. The Philharmonic Guild of Southern Oregon held a lunch eon at the country club Friday to discuss matters relative to the coming concert of the Phil harmonic orchestra on January 29. The orchestra, composed of local musicians, was formed last year under the direction of Rich ard D. Werner. Featured' as guest artist at the next concert will be Paulena Carter, well known west coast pianist. The newly organized Phil harmonic guild operates on an informal non-off;cer, non-minutes basis, and is expected to become a permanent aid to the the promising, fast-growing Phil harmonic Orchestra. Its various functions include the handling of publicity, ticket-selling, ad ditional fund-raising by such means as a tentatively planned spring fashion revue, and many other projects. In short, it will serve as general morale-booster and public relations custodians, so essential to the succes of any civic endeavor. Chairman for the guild is Mrs. Tom Popham. "Any- organization which can bring worthwhile entertainment to a community and at the same time serve as a stimulus for its performers to progress and give of their very best,, is highly de sirable in any community," Mrs. Popham stated. "Certainly such an organization has long been needed in southern Oregon. With two concerts now to its credit, tne second showing vast- im provement over the first, the Philharmonic orchestra promises to be the answer to this crying musical neefl. As was pointed out by Mrs Werner at the guild meeting, it is the aim of Mr. Werner to present concerts both varied and interesting. Along with heavier music, program will include light, popular selections: an all- German program; an all Tsch- aikowsky program; an all-op eratic one, featuring famous in termezzos and overtures. Mr. Werner feels that in this wav he will please not just a favor ed few, but everybody. His major purpose is to produce well-attended concerts, of a type the public will look forward to. As an added attraction for each concert it is planned to present an outstanding guest artist from metropolitan area. Addfng greatly to the orches tra's status are several recent improvements such as excellent bassoon and oboe players, and additional cellos and violins, making for a much better string section. Also, new interesting music has been purchased for the orchestra library. With rea sonable cooperation, Mr. Wern er, should be able to build his orchestra to one deserving re spect and admiration from the best, it is believed. Acting as his assistant director is John Drysdale. Present at the Guild meeting were Mesdames H. P. Bosworth Jr., James Collins, Ira Bolling er, Ralph Matlack, G. B. Dean, H. C. Drew, R. E. Bebb, O. L. Williams, W. H. Bresee, James Stevens, Vinson Vaughan, Almus Pruitt, Richard Werner, Tom Popham, all of Medford, and Mesdames R. C. Burgess and R. E. Leach, of Ashland. Demonstration Is Presented for Eagle Point Club - Eagle Point Members of Eagle Point Federated Garden club opened the last meeting by answering roll call with "My New Year's Garden Resolution The report of a board meet ing held in Eugene and sent by Mrs. A. O. Floyd, Medford, was read. The program on "Dried Flow er Arrangements" and "Shadow Box Arrangements," was dem onstrated by Mrs. Cliff Green. The resignation of Mrs. C. F, Davies as secretary was accept ed and Mrs. Ira Fitzgerald was appointed to fill the unexpired term. Next meeting of the club on February 1 will be held in the Grange hall with husbands of members as guests. Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. followed by an evening, of entertainment Mrs. Earle Jossy and Mrs Charles Cushman received prizes. Mrs. Ruby Stowell was host ess, assisted by Mrs. George McLean. Former Resident Visits Gold Hill Gold Hill Mrs. Forrest Brad- field Sr., recently visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cam eron, Highway 99, and with oth er friends in the Foots Creek area, where she formerly lived While here Mrs. Bradfield was initiated into Nevita chapter Order of Eastern Star, Central Point. Mrs. Cameron entertained with a card party in honor of Mrs. Bradfield New Year's eve Other guests were Mr. and Mrs, Robert Sugden, Mrs. Frank Daily, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mc- Lallen and Mr. and Mrs. J. G Kofahl. by Lois Myers and Jack Rouhier. Refreshments concluded the evening. Miss Florence Bain decorated the tables, and Mrs. Baker Yabrough was in charge of the kitchen. ... Clerk's Auxiliary Installs Officers Thursday Evening Formal installation of the 1956 officers of the National Federa tion of Post Office Clerks' auxil iary was held Thursday evening. Taking office were Mrs. Wil liam S. Rose, president; Mrs. Roland Hover, vice - president; Mrs. Claude Allen, secretary treasurer; Mrs. Chester Silliman, mistress at arms. Guest officer from Grants Pass was Mrs. Geneva Hargitt, who is vice-president of the Southern Oregon district. Mrs. Hargitt conducted the installation ritual and presented carnation cor sages to the new officers. She later reported on the highlights ana civic- activity now under taken by the post office woman. Plans were made for the "Mile O' Dimes," a joint project with the Post Office Carriers' auxiliary. In conclusion a pin of honor was presented to Mrs. Lawrence Crocker, retiring president. Mrs Crocker was also given a gift by the members for her faithful service in office. ' Attending the evening meet ing as 'a guest was Mrs. Harry Divestein, a new resident of Medford whose husband is on the staff of the local post office. Refreshments were served by the hostess, Mrs. Claude Allen. Meetings of this group are held in the homes of the local post office employees. District Deputy To Visit Lodge District Deputy Grand Master Harry Newnham, Gold Hill, will examine officers-elect of Med ford lodge, IOOF, at a meeting January 17 at 8 p.m. in the lodge hall. January 24 Odd Fellows and Rebekahs will hold joint in stallation of officers, with De puty Newnham and his Gold Hill team officiating. January 9 the Medford lodge's pitch players met the Central Point team, and was defeated and Tuesday evening the Med ford pool team outpointed the Jacksonville team in a game held in the Medford lodge rooms. More matches of this type are planned for coming weeks, including pinochle, crib bage and rifle contests. Two Meetings Set By Navy Mothers Rogue Valley Navy Mothers club members have scheduled two events for the week. The first will be an all-day meeting and work session at the home of Mrs. Guy Cobleigh, Phoenix. Members are endeav oring to assist families in dis tress and new members are in vited to join to assist in the work. A card party in the theater room at Camp White is set for Wednesday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m. Anyone wanting to attend should telephone 2-2985 or 2-7288 regarding transportation Women who attend are to take homemade pies. The bride, a junior student at Eagle Point high school, is the daughter of Mrs. Billy R. Skeet ers, Brownsboro. The bride groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gus G. Carlson, live at Eagle Point. Mrs. Skeeters accompanied the couple to Reno and was a witness for the ceremony. Also present was Steve Rigsby of Brownsboro. , The bride wore a navy blue dress and her corsage was of gardenias. The bridegroom also attended Eagle Point high school and is employed at the Cascade Wood Products company. He served overseas in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. Auxiliary Votes Contribution to Memorial Hospital At the January meeting of the Medford unit of the American Legion auxiliary, it was voted to contribute $100 to the Rogue Valley Memorial hospital cam paign fund. At the present time, unit members are serving break- fasts to the campaign workers each morning, to continue for the next two weeks. The child welfare chairman. Mrs. H. C. Goldsmith, reported that over the holidays nine Christmas baskets were deliver ed containing food and toys val ued at $251. Toys were sent to the Roseburg Child Welfare cen ter and puzzles and cake mix were sent to the Fairview home at Salem. A veteran's family who lost their clothing in the Marysville flood was also given financial aid. Subscriptions were renewed for 'The Star,' official publica: tion from the leprosarium at Carville, La., to be placed at the public library and the Camp White library. These magazines help to educate the community in what is being done to combat Hansen's disease. Mrs. Earl Bigalow, chairman of the Heart Sunday drive to be conducted February 26, asked for volunteers to act as team captains. Following the meeting, re freshments were served by Mrs. M. E. Fisher and Mrs. George Smith. . 1 Lodge Holds Ceremony Mrs. Bessie Johnston was in stalled prophetess of Weatonka council, Degree of Pocohontas lodge, at ceremonies conducted January 6. Mrs. Charles Stelle took the office of Pocohontas; Mrs. Ralph White, Wenonah and Roland Wicker, Powhatan. ' The posts of warriors were assumed, by Jack Dooms, Dick Singler, Louis Thompson and Ed Schackel. Charles Stelle and Henry Dooms were installed guards of the forest and the teepee, and Mrs. Norma Pitman and Mrs. Audley White, first and second councilors. Mrs. James Wicker and Mrs. James Grigsby were installed to the positions cf first and second scouts, while first and second runners are Mrs. Carl Ludwig and Mrs. Ruth Iverson. The new record keeper is Mrs. Henry Dooms; collector of wam pum, Mrs. Richard Singler: wampum keeper, Mrs. Noel Er skine; team captain, P. M. Al dredge; musician, Mrs. Orval Hayes, and reporter, Mrs. James Wicker. Pythian club met last week at the home of Mrs. Carl Ficht ner.' A layette shower for Mrs. James O'Duane was held, after which cards concluded the eve ning with , Mrs. Leroy Cline re ceiving a prize. Pythian Sisters will meet Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Pythian building. This will be the new officers' first meeting New Officers Installed for Knights and Pythian Sisters Joint installation of officers of the Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters was held last Monday evening at the Pythian build ing with Edward Bostwick installed as chancellor commander, ana Mrs. Mildred Tolle as most excellent chief. Mrs. Harry Bryant, grand chief of Oregon and also a mem ber of the local temple, installed the officers who included Mrs. Tolle, Miss Florence Bain, ex cellent senior; Mrs. Ed Bostwick, excellent junior, Mrs. Morley Lamp, inanager; Mrs. Roy Jack son, secretary; Mrs. Floyd Mur ray, treasurer; Mrs. Don Ross, protector and Mrs. Joe Cook, guard. Others introduced were Mrs Don Anderson, staff captain; Mrs. Cech, ' pianist; and Mrs, George Bryant, press corre spondent. All officers were pre sented corsages with Mrs. Tolle receiving an orchid. Mrs. Chester Jines, president, announced that proceeds from the sale of the chapter's cook books will be sent to the Crip pled Children's hospital school in Eugene, during, February.
