Dance Given at Hotel For Past Queen Central Point Miss Anita Conger, junior past queen of Bethel0 33 of Central Point was honored at. a formal dinner in the Jackson hotel Pioneer room January 10. The event was done in a "stardust" theme and an addendum to the music of "Star Dust," was presented for Miss Conger by the bethel members. She also was presented a tradi tional silver spoon and a bou quet of blue carnations. Tables were decorated in -silver and' blue, the past queen's colors. Specialty numbers were given by pupils of Colleen Hope school of dance. Nearly 50 persons attended the dinner including the bethel guardian, Mrs. Al Setness, Mr. Setness and other guardian council members. Committees for the event were Miss Vickie Noel, queen; Miss Maria Abbott, senior princess; Miss Nadra Moore, junior prin cess; Miss Sally Elden, guide; Miss Helen Hood, marshal; Miss Kay Askwith, chaplain, and Miss Linda Warren, recorder. Dancing for members and their escorts followed dinner. ' VFW, Auxiliary Announce Dinner A potluck dinner will be held Tuesday, January 17 at 6:30 p.m., for members of Crater Lake post, Veterans'of Foreign Wars, and auxiliary. The event will be held at the VFW hall. A moving picture will- be shown and a social activity pe riod conducted after the dinner. An invitation is extended to all veterans and their families interested to. attend. ' A recent meeting of the aux iliary was held at the home, of Mrs. Hazel Ramsey with Mrs. Amy Randle as hostess. Mrs. Ivjm Lusk, president, assisted the hostess and a 1 o'clock luncheon was served. The sew ing circle . also convened and secret pals were drawn for the year. (yMaslands 3 Furniture 227 East Sixth Street, Just Around the Corner from Penney's Oregon PTA Congress Approves Legislative Guide for Units Re-emphasizing its non-partisan policy in connection with legislation, the Oregon Congress of Parents and Teachers' execu tive committee has approved a guide for local unit presidents and program chairmen. The state legislation committee, of which Mrs. Clyde Gideon, Portland, is chairman, prepared the guide in' anticipation -of an active legisla tion year. Parent-Teacher associations na tionally are vitally concerned in legislation affecting the welfare of children and youth, but the organization and its officers ab stain from partisan activities and from endorsing candidates, it is pointed out. PTAs take a stand on principles and issues and sup port legislation, not candidates or parties. The Oregon Congress continues to urge its units to pre-1 sent both sides of any issue dis cussed at meetings to provide an informed citizenry. Recognizing the valuable serv ices which state legislators can render to PTA membership by sharing factual and research ma terials relating to education and the welfare of children, the Con gress legislation committee also pointed out that 'state legislators are often able to present the state-wide aspects of a problem, broadening the local audience's conception, and can bring home to PTA member's the value of their personal letters to members of the legislature. At the same time, to keep PTA programs Needs of School To Be Discussed By Howard PTA The January meeting of How ard Parent-Teacher association will be held Tuesday, January 17 at 8 p.m. in the gymnasium The topic of the evening will be "School Needs," led by a panel made up of the school board members. Parents will join in discussing the problems with the panel. This meeting is to be one of the most important of the year, it is stated. Refreshments will be served by room mothers of the second grade and child care will be provided for in Mrs. Solin's room. Olive Rebekah Lodge Announces Meeting Olive Rebekah lodge will meet Monday, January 16 at 8 p.m., in the IOOF lodge rooms. Plans for joint installation of of ficers with the Odd Fellows lodge January 24 will be made. Mrs. Frank Chapman, noble grand, will preside, and refresh ments will be served. The legislation committee of the Oregon Congress continues to study the emergency clause attached to taxation legislation, "earmarker taxes," the changed annual school meeting date, and reorganization of county school administration and tax structure. The committee has also made "thumb-nail" studies of corporal punishment in schools, sex devi ate laws, added incentive com pensation for experienced and exceptional teachers, metropoli tan tax. districts, mobile school construction, Federal Aid for school buildings and the effects of . the change in the physical education laws in the state of Oregon. The board of managers has also ratified the National Con gress of Parents and Teachers' policy on federal aid for educa tion and the national's policy on school and community serv ices in the nation's capital. Four Units To Hold Meetings " Four Jackson County Home Extension units will meet dur ing the week. All will study the subject, "The Art of Pressing New Fabrics." " ' .Shady Cove Mrs. T. M. Lone Pine The meeting for Lone Pine unit women will open at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 19 at the home of Mrs. Warren Kelsoe, Hillcrest road. Luncheon will be served at noon. Office Ashland .National recogni tion has been focused upon Southern Oregon college by the recent election of Miss Irene Hollenbeck, SOC faculty mem ber, to the office of first vice president of the National Asso ciation of Biology Teachers, ac cording to an announcement made by Dr. Elmo N. Stevenson, president of the school. In addition to her background of high school and college biol ogy teaching, Miss Hollenbeck has long been active in profes sional projects, having helped to prepare the present course of study in biology' now in use throughout secondary schools in Oregon. While teaching in high school, she experimented with methods and materials for the superior student in biology, and with methods and materials for the retareded, with the result that a number of her students have been recipients of FSA and Westinghouse Talent Search awards. Charter member of the NABT, present state conservation chair man, and regional membership chairman, ' Miss Hollenbeck has also served on, the textbook eval uation commitee, on the Nation al Conservation Project commit tee, and as state of Oregon mem bership chairman. Miss Hollenbeck is a member, of several state and national or ganizations, has written various professional articles for publica tion, and received a number of teaching awards including that of a Ford Foundation Fellow ship for 1953-54. Department Auxiliary Plans Dance at Camp Department of Oregon, Veter ans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, will give a dance at the Camp White Domiciliary Monday, Jan uary IB, at 8 p.m. in the theatre at Camp White. Mrs. John Benson, parlia mentarian of Oregon . Congress of Parents and Teachers, pre sented the charter to Dr. Lee Mellish, president of the new group. After open-house in the school rooms, the business meeting took place in the school cafeter ia at 8 p.m. Vincent Bevis gave a report from the Medford City Council of Parent-Teacher associations. A nominating committee was elected. Ward Smith, chairman, Mrs. Ed. Kliever and Aetna Carr are the new members. Dr. Mellish" appointed as chairman Mrs. Ed. The committee will discuss plans and problems. Hedrick PTA plans a social evening of supper and dancing at the school as a fund-raising project. The date in February will be announced later. The meeting then formed into small groups for 10 minutes, from which questions evolved and were presented to a panel of teachers and parents for dis cussion: Mr. Bevis, Mrs. Stanley Lacy, Leonard Mayfield, Dr. Mellish, Barney Riggs, Mrs. Van .Dyke and Miss June Wheaton answered questions concerning the lunch period at, school, early dismissal, activity , periods, homework, supervised study, required sleep for children, and other questions.
