t TWELVE MEDrORD (OREGON MAIL TRIBUNK Sunday, January 1, 155S Ex-Tornado Preppers Shine In College; Big Tourneys, Auto Race Highlight Year" Standout achievements by Medford high athletes, the in creased number of ex-Medford prep stars making names for themselves on the college scene three major tournaments, the in spiration example of ironman indurance shown by a hardtop auto racer, the performances of Rogue Valley Country club golf ers in northwest action Those provided most of the high points in another big year for sports locally in 1955. Medford prepsters took three state championships, were sec ond in the state in one sport and in an0her, after winning district laurels, gave the eventual state titlist its toughest tussle of the season. Two Oregon diadems came in track. The Tornado overpowered metropolitan opposition in the Hayward relays and fractioned by three other schools in the Class A division of the state meet. Jerry Kalapus then gave the Black Tornado a tennis co- title with SotOh Salem y cap turing singles honors, first such toga for Medford in at least many years. Second to Eugene In basketball one of Medford's greatest prep teams in history was second in the state, losing only to the champion' Eugene (twice in a 28-game slate. Med ford's other district honors came in football in which sport it lost out to Marshfield in state quar terfinals. Marshfield went on to take the crown. Medford high track produced an All-American javelin tosser, Eldon Francis. In basketball Larry Copple and Frank Rector TERRY MADDOX UO Most Valuable won all-state prep in football Monte honors Hoist and and Gary Riley recognition. received all-state University of Oregon had the top number of ex-Tornado stars they included Jack Morris, Norm Chapman and Mike De vore in football; Morris, Ed Bingham and Jack Moad in track; Terry Maddox the school's most valuable baseballer, and Dave Newland, coast college wrestling champ. Everett Kast ner was on the Frosh basketball squad. At Oregon State college Lar ry Copple and Glen Peterson were on the Rook basketball was starring for the University squad. Frank Rector, all-stater, of Portland cage varsity while Jerry Kalapus was on the var sity at Pacific university. Ed McCullough made the starting football team at Andersop col lege, Indiana. Grand Pacific The three big tourneys were the Grand Pacific of the Pacific International Trapshooting as sociation in which George Mor in was high gunner, the Oregon Open golf event won by Bruce Cudd and the Southern Oregon Golf tourney won by Bob Atkin son and Carole Jo Kabler, na tional junior women's champ. Golf standouts from RVCC were in state and northwest meets, George Harrington, Phil Getchell, Harry Millette, George Harrington, Sue DeVoe, Mrs. W. W. Davies and George Beech ler The latter, an Ontario resi dent, won the state amateur match crown and Getchell was the runner-up. Harrington won the Roseburg invitational and was runner-up state medal player. 4 - O CAROLE KABLER SO Golf Champion Getchell and Pro Al Williams set RVCC course records. Cecil James gave the example of endurance. He drove the en tire 24-hours without relief to win the Labor Day hardtop auto marathon at the posse grounds. In basketball, first major sport of the year, Talent high lavas the top B team of the coun ty and Crater wrapped up small A school honors. Yellow Cab gave Medford its strongest in dependent team in a number of yeaPs. In track Rogue River high was the dominant B power of the area and Crater was the small A school standout again. In baseball Grants Pass won A-l and "Crater A-2 prep titles and GP went to the state tourn ey. Class B Talent was a state tourney participant. In semi-pro Drain won the Southern Oregon league and Glendale the Rogue Valley deague. Central Point- Mediord was American Legion district champion. Glen Gor bous, ex-Medford Nugget, reach ed the majors. Football season saw Phoenix end the Rogue League domination of Crater high and tie Coquille in the dis trict play-off while St. Mary's ruled county B schools. In boxing Larry Lewis and Larry Nored, Medford, won state AAU togas. Among bowling' highlights was the second place showing of Rose Barr and Aud rey Swoape, Medford, in state Class A doubles. Medford keg- lers had their first full year in the expanded facilities on North Riverside avenue. Opening of a second junior high school in, Medford brought with it an expended athletic program which could help in building senior high teams of the future. Sour notes of the year were in the apathy toward Softball and pro baseball in Medford. The Medford Softball association folded and sufficient backing could not be found to accept an invitation to join the Northwest pro baseball circuit.
