Ex-Tornado Preppers Shine
In College; Big Tourneys,
Auto Race Highlight Year"
Standout achievements by
Medford high athletes, the in
creased number of ex-Medford
prep stars making names for
themselves on the college scene
three major tournaments, the in
spiration example of ironman
indurance shown by a hardtop
auto racer, the performances of
Rogue Valley Country club golf
ers in northwest action Those
provided most of the high points
in another big year for sports
locally in 1955.
Medford prepsters took three
state championships, were sec
ond in the state in one sport and
in an0her, after winning district
laurels, gave the eventual state
titlist its toughest tussle of the
season.
Two Oregon diadems came in
track. The Tornado overpowered
metropolitan opposition in the
Hayward relays and fractioned
by three other schools in the
Class A division of the state
meet. Jerry Kalapus then gave
the Black Tornado a tennis co-
title with SotOh Salem y cap
turing singles honors, first
such toga for Medford in at
least many years.
Second to Eugene
In basketball one of Medford's
greatest prep teams in history
was second in the state, losing
only to the champion' Eugene
(twice in a 28-game slate. Med
ford's other district honors came
in football in which sport it lost
out to Marshfield in state quar
terfinals. Marshfield went on to
take the crown.
Medford high track produced
an All-American javelin tosser,
Eldon Francis. In basketball

top number of ex-Tornado stars
they included Jack Morris,
Norm Chapman and Mike De
vore in football; Morris, Ed

track; Terry Maddox the school's
most valuable baseballer, and
Dave Newland, coast college
wrestling champ. Everett Kast
ner was on the Frosh basketball
squad.
At Oregon State college Lar
ry Copple and Glen Peterson
were on the Rook basketball

squad. Frank Rector, all-stater,
of Portland cage varsity while
Jerry Kalapus was on the var
sity at Pacific university. Ed
McCullough made the starting
football team at Andersop col

Grand Pacific
The three big tourneys were

Open golf event won by Bruce
Cudd and the Southern Oregon
Golf tourney won by Bob Atkin
son and Carole Jo Kabler, na
tional junior women's champ.
Golf standouts from RVCC
were in state and northwest
meets, George Harrington, Phil
Getchell, Harry Millette, George
Harrington, Sue DeVoe, Mrs.
W. W. Davies and George Beech
ler The latter, an Ontario resi
dent, won the state amateur
match crown and Getchell was
the runner-up. Getchell and

Cecil James gave the example
of endurance. He drove the en
tire 24-hours without relief to
win the Labor Day hardtop auto
marathon at the posse grounds.
In basketball, first major
sport of the year, Talent high
lavas the top B team of the coun
ty and Crater wrapped up small
A school honors. Yellow Cab
gave Medford its strongest in
dependent team in a number of
yeaPs. In track Rogue River
high was the dominant B power
of the area and Crater was the
small A school standout again.
In baseball Grants Pass won
A-l and "Crater A-2 prep titles
and GP went to the state tourn
ey. Class B Talent was a state
tourney participant. In semi-pro
Drain won the Southern Oregon
league and Glendale the Rogue
Valley deague. Central Point-
Mediord was American Legion
district champion. Glen Gor
bous, ex-Medford Nugget, reach
ed the majors. Football season
saw Phoenix end the Rogue
League domination of Crater
high and tie Coquille in the dis
trict play-off while St. Mary's
ruled county B schools.
In boxing Larry Lewis and
Larry Nored, Medford, won state
AAU togas. Among bowling'
highlights was the second place
showing of Rose Barr and Aud
rey Swoape, Medford, in state
Class A doubles. Medford keg-
lers had their first full year in
the expanded facilities on North
Riverside avenue.
Opening of a second junior
high school in, Medford brought
with it an expended athletic
program which could help in
building senior high teams of
the future.
Sour notes of the year were
in the apathy toward Softball
and pro baseball in Medford.
The Medford Softball association
folded and sufficient backing
could not be found to accept an
invitation to join the Northwest
pro baseball circuit.
