Q Colorado, defending Big Sev en champ but overlooked in pre season dope sheets because graduation claimed four start- CTE, played host to the Hawkeyes Monday night at Boulder, Colo, and handed them a 60-57 defeat. The surprise is topped this cefQftn only by Kentucky's loss to Temple last Saturday night and Kentucky narrowly av erted another upset Monday night by nipping De Paul, 71 69. Colorado handed Iowa a 75 74 defeat during last season's NCAA tournament, but things were suppcd to be different now. And it seemed they were as Iowa seized a 33-31 halftime lSd. But Colorado surged to a 54-48 lead midway in the sec ond half before an Iowa rally led by Bill Seaberg narrowed the gap to 57-58 with 26 seconds left. Seattle Pacific Suffers First Loss Forest Grove U.R) Seattle Pacific suffered its first basket ball defeat in five games last night as Pacific University came from behind for a 72-69 victory. Eddie Ramsdell led Pacific with 18 points but Nick DeWees of Seattle Pacific had 22 for high honors. SANTEE ENTERED New York (U.R) Wes Santee, the United States' premier mile runner, has been entered for three events in Thursday night's metropolitan AAU Handicap track meet. Santee will start from scratch in the mile event, but whether he runs in the 600 or 800 yard events depends upon the time schedule for the meet at the 102nd Engineers Armory. Direct ors of the Pacific Coast League met here yesterday bubbling with enthusiasm and predictions of a rosy future for PCL base ball for the first time in years. Most of the business was rou tine. The directors formally in stalled Leslie O'Connor as league president after accepting the resignation of Claire V. Goodwin. Jerry Donovan, new president of the San Francisco Seals was accepted as a director. Donovan was named to his new post by the Boston Red Sox, who re cently purchased the San Fran cisco team. The directors even made an amiable attempt to prepare a three-year schedule that would do away with the practice, of keeping Seattle, Portland and the new Vancouver team in Cali fornia the first three weeks be cause of the fear of rain. It was tentatively decided that the Northern teams would return to their home parks after two series in California, thereby permitting a better adjustment of schedules all around the league. Wollpert Worried About- East Trip San Francisco (U.R) Coach Phil Wollpert saw trouble ahead today for his University of San Francisco powerhouse which starts a crucial swing through the East this week. "It's in the percentages that we might lose," Woolpert said of the top-ranked Dons who have won 29 straight since an early season setback bv UCLA last year. "But even if we do, we won't be beaten too soundly and it won't mean the end of the sea son for us." The Dons play Marquette Fri day night in first round play of the DePaul tournament in Chi cago in which that university is entered along with eighth-ranked Duquesne. Woolpert added that "the kids have no illusions and will be taking the games one at a time." After the DePaul tournament, USF has dates at Wichita, Kans., and Loyola of New Orleans be fore moving into Madison Square Garden for the Holiday Festival tourney. Woolpert said he hasn't been able to get a scouting report on Marquette because his middle western contact had moved and left no forwarding address. WHITMAN IN OVERTIME Walla Walla (U.R) Whitman edged Northwest Nazarene 71-70 in an overtime basketball game last night as Del Klicker scored 25 points for the winners. Doris Paul was second with 610 and Vera Boxing Guilds Meet in New York New York (U.R) Offic ials of the New York Boxing Guild and the International Guild met in secret session early today at a midtown hotel to map battle plans against the New York State Athletic commis sion's "Guild ban." Charley Johnston, president of the International Guild, was scheduled to return from San Francisco before nightfall and consider whatever plan is evolv ed. Not since their organization in 1951 have the New York guild and the parent internation al faced such a crisis as the one resulting from yesterday's an nouncement by Commission Chairman Julius Helfand that the guild was outlawed in New York State. At least four possible moves were being considered today by guild officials: (1) Order a gen eral boycott against New York state and permit their boxers to fight only in "friendly" states; (2) Fight the ban openly with a test case in court; (3) Go un derground and operate sub rosa in New York state while osten sibly accepting the commission's ban, and (4) junk the current New York guild and reorganize as a labor union. Managers of champions Rocky Marciano, Archie Moore, SugaTr Ray robinson, Carmen Basilio and Sandy Saddler are included among the 83 members of the New York organization. Trippi Becomes Coach With Chicago Club Chicago U.R) Charley Trip pi, former All-America halfback at the University of Georgia whom Coach Wally Butts called "the greatest athlete I have ever coached," announced his retire ment yesterday as a player to become assistant coach of the Chicago Cardinals. "I was looking forward to coaching," Trippi said, "but I wasn't expecting this job. It's a wonderful opportunity. - Trippi played in the Cardinal backfield for nine years after the late Charley Bidwell signed him. Several other football and baseball clubs sought Trippi. SQUAD NAMED Minneapolis (U.R) A 20-mem- ber United States Olympic hock ey squad will be named today, Robert Ridder, manager of the squad, announced Mdnday. Tuesday December 13, 1953 Eagles Look For New Pro Coach Philadelphia (U.R) The Philadelphia Eagles of the Na tional Football League began shopping for a new head coach today and General Manager Vince McNally hoped to find his "Christmas package" in the high fashion department rather than the bargain basement. McNally, in announcing the firing of head coach Jim Trimble and three assistants yesterday, frankly admitted the club wants to hire a "name" coach from either college . or professional ranks. He said he hoped to land a new mentor before the NFL's annual meeting in January. The Eagles' general manager said he was after someone in the class of Orange Bowl rivals Jim Tatum of Maryland and Bud Wilkinson of Oklahoma, or Navy Coach Eddie Erdelatz. Biggie Munn of Michigan State and Blanton Collier of Kentucky also were mentioned. Eugene Gets Ems Casting Rights Eugene (U.R) Eugene radio station KORE announced yester day it has gained exclusive broadcast rights to the games of the Emerald Empire Emeralds baseball team. Dick Richards, general man ager of the Eugene entry in the Northwest baseball league, sign ed the agreement for the club and Lee P. Bishop, president and general manager of KORE, signed for the station. The contract runs three years. Last year, the Emeralds were Northwest champs. READY FOR TITLE Paris (U.R) French mid dleweight contender Charles Hu mez said today he is ready and willing to fight champion Sugar Ray Robinson "anywhere" for the world title. Mumps, with eight cases, was most numerous. There were two cases each in Medford and Ash land, three in Gold Hill and one in Jacksonville.
